| Is anyone doing the $21 Challenge? sapphirez - 2009-11-08 18:10:00 |
| If I was a family of 4 I would give it a go, but as I live alone, Im wondering if for me it would have to be the $5.25 Challenge. I think I could do it, just using up stuff in my cupboard. I have good supplies of beans, rice, lentils, canned tomatoes, onions, cheese, potatoes, eggs, powdered milk, cereal, flour and coffee, as well as a couple of meat serves in the freezer. I think my $5 would go on some fruit and veges. bopeep80 - 2009-11-09 10:46:00 |

| No need to bump any more as threads last for a year. davidt4 - 2009-11-18 13:03:00 |
| Don't know if anyone has posted this yet as I haven't had a chance to read the whole thread, but here are a couple of recipes for "Jarrah" style coffee mixes which are great to give as gifts with coffee mugs. Cappuccino mix - 1/2 cup good quality instant coffee, 1/2 - 3/4 cup castor sugar (depending on strength of coffee), 1 cup instant non-fat milk powder, 1 teaspoon cinnamon - combine in food processor until well blitzed, wait for dust to settle and put in airtight container, use 2 tablespoons per cup of hot water. sticky3 - 2009-11-19 12:24:00 |
| Cafe Au Lait Mix - 1/2 cup good quality instant coffee, 1/2 cup castor sugar (depending on strength of coffee), 2 cups instant non-fat milk powder, 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, mix as above and use 1/4 cup of mixture for each 2/3 cup hot water. Swiss Mocha Mix - 1/2 cup instant coffee, 1/2 cup castor suagr, 1 cup non-fat milk powder, 2 tablespoons cocoa, mix as above and use 1 Tablespoon per 3/4 cup hot water. Hope these recipes are useful to someone. sticky3 - 2009-11-19 12:28:00 |

| Bumping & Thanks Sticky3 that really does look like a good recipe for a gift. Yesterday I sat down with the family to discus what presents we needed to buy and for whom. It was good to get a list. We settled on Gift baskets for 4 close neighbours.. bottle of wine and some nibbles... because we had a list and knew what we wanted when I went to a gift clearance sale today and saw 4 lovely star shaped baskets for $1.50 I grabbed them.... If we hadn't the list I wouldn't have thought to buy them...... They are stunning too and will look great. Edited by toadfish at 7:20 pm, Sun 22 Nov toadfish - 2009-11-22 19:19:00 |
| LYNNEANDELLA - what an awesome thing you are wanting to do. I am in west auckland and travelling to bronws bay would not be agood option petrol etc, I hope you found someone to tkae the bread off your hands, what a legend you are. Wish there was more people like this, or more bakerys that do this, we have a bakery up the road that we go to and if we buy a pie and a cake and my partner goes in with work clothes on they give him yesterday bread like maybe one loaf, usually pretty good for garlic bread that night, we love it chonnni - 2009-11-24 22:31:00 |
| With cauli and broccoli so cheap at the moment, now would be a good time to buy and freeze for winter use when it is sooo expensive. lala2 - 2009-11-25 13:53:00 |
| So how do you do that? do you have to parboil the broccoli first? ab_forward1 - 2009-11-25 19:28:00 |
| When I am freezing my garden vegs, I boil them for a min, then fish them out and then free flow freeze them on a tray then put in a plastic bag to use later. I haven't had to buy anything green (except broccoli) since spring! Veg garden is growing everything great. lookingfor - 2009-11-25 20:18:00 |
| its a great idea to be doing that as if you have friends with gardens etc etc you can always pay them back by giving them a bag of frozen produce or making some pickles or chutneys and they think its wonderfull, but sometimes people like the relaxation of having a tending a veg garden but dont have the energy and the time to not waste the produce properly, so this is a great avenue. Corn(freeze in the husk), tomatoes(bag and freeze), pumpkin ( cut and bag)does not ned to be parboiled just freeze in old grocery bags until needed, pumpkin does go abit soggy if your wanting to emerge it to cook in water but if roasting or steaming it its fine.......beans peas spinich and silverbeet can just be quickly par boiled and frozen spinich & s/beet in nests and beans and peas in bag lot sizes they do go icy if your opening them all the time so its a good idea to freeze small quantitiies of them.....remember to add abit of salt to your blanching water to give that added flavour. kob - 2009-11-26 08:15:00 |
| Bumping up... needs to be near the top with Christmas around the corner! My budget advice for the day.... mmmmm keep an eye on the junk mail.... never know they may have just what you need for Aunt Mabel or cousin Joe on a super special. Don't leave things till the last minute... plan plan plan.... I knew we had a big family BBQ coming up so I brought bulk Rump steak and spent 10 minutes cutting it up into nice BBQ size peices and bagging in meal portions (including the big family BBQ Portion), then the little bits I sliced finely marinated and had as beef stirfry. Made so many more meals that way and no waste. toadfish - 2009-11-28 06:39:00 |
| i always go shopping early morning in supermarkets and try find all the stuff they need to get rid off that day. and you can get meat a bit cheaper and i buy two day old bread made at supermarket great for soups and toast sumtimes i do a $2 or under shop on each product for 20 bucks 10 items can be tough and takes awile to brouse but can be done funshop72 - 2009-11-28 16:49:00 |
| And to those watching their budgets, more so after a hard year for quite a few.... Cheers. valentino - 2009-12-02 16:40:00 |
| Yes I agree been a very hard year in our household with recession affecting the constrction industry which my hubby works in. 1175 | Wouldn't you know it, i go back to work full time to get ahead, spend a year putting by for Miss 17's university fees, maybe to shift house and self employed Builder hubby goes and hurts his leg and is off work now for a while while it heals. So ACC does kick in (after we lose the first weeks wage) but nowhere near what he earns by building....Anyway I am focusing on the positive...I still have him... ...how blessed are we that I am working full time so we can still make our committments....and its only a short term thing, some people have far worse things to deal with. Now I need some help..... Edited by toadfish at 6:34 am, Sat 12 Dec toadfish - 2009-12-12 06:34:00 |
| Reading Cinemas..... Are these people mean or what. For a budget style chrissy present I wanted to buy a Movie Voucher and a bag of lollies for 1 Rotorua Relly and 2 x Movies vouchers for another couple. I have been emailing there head office, first I am told its a $10 courier charge... where at the most a Tracked envelope from the post office is $4.50. The second they told me its $16 for an adult voucher - It clearly states on their website its $14.50 fo an Adult to go to the movies... (or $60 for 5 - well I only need 3) So does anyone know if you can get them cheaper over the counter or is that what it costs... I know its only $1.50 per ticket extra but I hate being ripped off. The other thing is I can buy a book if someone else wants 2 tickets at $12 each. .... Or maybe someone on here who lives in Rotorua (or another city who has reading) can buy a book, sell me 3 tickets at $14.50 each meaning their 2 only cost them $16.50 ($8.25 a ticket) Can anyone give me any ideas on this one..... 1177 | PS There is no reading theatres in Auckland. toadfish - 2009-12-12 06:45:00 |
| for a start Toady i would be sending an email to the head office if there website prices are different than shop prices UNLESS of course it states that some prices will differ in diff stores OR after bla bla bla time there will be diff prices due to demand bla bla then thats diff but just from what your saying and why cant the person you were speaking too, let you send in a courier bag of you own, I cant see the harm, and alot less that $10 kob - 2009-12-14 06:09:00 |
| WELL a few months back I was telling I was making my DIL a special from the heart present well I have finally finished it, I detailed all my recipes that I have ever made and put them into a fantastic recipe book for her all with photos (some googled) and am taking it to the bookshop this morning to get it binded and front and back covers laminated, pretty proud of myself on that score ill let you know the total binding charges tomorrow.........xmas planning going great hubby won a ham at golf I won a huge xmas cake in a raffle and was given two bottles of red wine so xmas day is on its way people kob - 2009-12-14 06:12:00 |
| well it cost a big $5 to laminate back and front pages and get it spiral binded so it definately is a book of recipes filled with love, I was quite impressed I hope she will be too. kob - 2009-12-14 13:35:00 |

| The Warehouse now sells a line of organic shampoos and conditioners - $5.95 (500 ml I think, quite large) bottle and they are really nice to use. tumbleweeds2011 - 2009-12-18 22:25:00 |
| Well success with the Tickets, after a few emails she gave me the number of the Rotorua Theatre and they took my details over the phone, charged me $14.50 per ticket and never once asked me for a courier charge and posted them to me FOC. I rang Tuesday night and recieved them in the mail Thursday... wrapped them up with their box of favourites and they were back in the post yesterday... phew! Nearly have christmas in the bag... it feels a little low key though as this is the first time in over 18 years (If ever!) I have worked up to christmas eve... and hubby has been in hospital & is now off work on ACC till January (has only just started to hobble around)... so as you can imagine we have had other things to think about..... Still really looking forward to the break between Christmas and the New Year... sure makes you appreciate your days off & to receive a fortnights pay in the middle of it is an added bonus that I haven't had in over 18 years as well. Keep smiling ladies and remember Christmas is about families... the ones you love wouldn't want you to go into debt by buying them things you can't really afford. Take care JB toadfish - 2009-12-19 05:27:00 |
| PS. My Christmas budget tip and I have done it twice now. I posted 2 presents together to people I knew were going to be together on Christmas day.... that way I paid half the postage. eg $4 for 2 pressies instead of $4 each..... toadfish - 2009-12-19 05:30:00 |
| PPS... Don't forget this is the "Trademe" site, It takes only 5 mins to load something... This week 2 nice people put $10 & $8 directly into my grocery account, less postage and commission thats still $13 for me to spend on christmas... That could be 2 x boxes of favourites on special for presents and a 2 litre of milk that "I" didn't have to pay for. I often clear out my kitchen cupboards, recipe books and list them on here.. I always remember the saying "Look after the pennys and the pounds will look after themselves" So I am very happy saving little bits or making little bits here and there. toadfish - 2009-12-19 06:15:00 |
| Bumping from wayyy down the list. Have avoided the sales as I didn't want to spend any money at all, but popped down for an hour last night... 4 O'clock was a very relaxed time to go... lots of parks at Botany. I went for 3 specific things... brought a fabulous & dreamy pillow (40% off) with some chistmas money and some oober delux tea towels (30% off) that I badly needed from Briscoes... then I went to Diva and brought 4 x birthday pressies (for the present box) these were $5 each and were all priced at $25 and over full price, so great presents for teenage girls for 5 Bucks!!! Its all about planning ahead... Hope you are having a great christmas and remember you save much more by NOT going to the sales than going lol... but if you do go, go for specific things you need.... toadfish - 2009-12-28 20:01:00 |
| Hi guys! Firstly a huge thanks to sticky3 for the ultra yummo "jarrah" style coffee recipes. I am drinking a cup now and have just finished making a whole batch for our mums. Very nice and highly recomended to all coffee lovers! Toady - I saw your post in the condensed milk thread and I have to say I wholeheartedly agree, certain threads and posters are getting very nasty indeed. Lastly - I would like to thank all of the fabulous posters in this thread for all of the fantastic and money-saving tips. I have saved oodles of money from the few tips I have actioned and am so greatful. So, MERRY CHRISTMAS from my family to you all. Debbie :) glendeb - 2009-12-28 20:08:00 |
| As I said in the post, I have read a few posts now and just sighed... but maybe its the Christmas Cheer (2 glasses of Lindaurs new sparking Sauvignon Blanc - which I love but would have the purists wincing I'm sure) that gave me the courage... 1189 | Hi kob, hope you had a great xmas. What a fantastic idea of yours with the recipes etc. Hope DIL loved it. I think I might put something similar together for my DIL as son keeps telling her when she cooks "its not like mum makes"!!! Hi toady, hope everything is going along well for you now and may 2010 be a great year for everybody. pixiegirl - 2009-12-29 15:23:00 |
| Bumping this from way way down the list. Feeling quite righteous today. Spent the last few days "Spring cleaning" I have box's and box's of stuff to go to the op shop, many many black bags being picked up in tommorrows rubbish & listed some things on here... still have some more to go but all the pictures are taken. Hubby did the same in the shed, he is quite mobile now and due to go back to work soon... So its just a matter of sitting back and hoping someone wants our rubbish lol. I made 2 lasagnes for the freezer today using reduced to clear mince I had in the freezer 2 x Trays of the good quality health foundation tick mince about 450gms each tray for $2 each. Lasagne is a great meal in a hurry in our house, I have been known to put it in my oven frozen in the morning... set the automatic timer and come home to it heated through... no fuss no bother. I love my freezer as there is not a thing in it (and its chocca) that is full price. Got a good deal today... would never buy the Tegal shredded chicken for $3.99 for a tiddly amount but they had some reduced to clear (exp 5/1) for $1.60 and I had a coupon for $1 off... so 60c... that will make a nice lunch for hubby and I tommorrow. I also brought some lovely 400gm packs of kiwi middle bacon for $3.60 reduced to clear so brought 4, 1 x I have left out and 3 x have gone in the freezer. I just stock up whenever I happen to go there when they have just had a "markdown" and buy up large, then the next time if there is nothing supercheap I don't buy meat at all that week... seems to work out that there is always plenty of variety in the freezer that way. So thats me for now, still budget conscious but have a feeling 2010 is going to be a good year. I will keep budgeting though and then we can go on another nice family holiday... thinking a cruise....... toadfish - 2010-01-01 19:58:00 |

| Well I do try tumbleweed :) I read the book how to live off the oily rag many many years ago and it really struck a cord with me. I am extremely blessed that my budgeting is a choice. If you read the book I come up as the "Hate waste" oily ragger. I would far rather spend money on nice things than say food shopping or day to day bills. Every $1 I save can be spent on something lovely. People are always amazed at the lovely things we do as a family, what they don't see is the behind the scenes careful budgeting and planning & The going without of the daily Flat whites, meals out etc... I'll keep trying to inspire as the way people waste money and have nothing to show for it at the end of the week is such a shame and unnessesary. My hint for today Make sure you start Kiwisaver... If you are a SAH mum you can put in $20 a week and the government will match it, where else can you get 100% return on your money. If you are working, Join Kiwisaver and if you think 2% of your wage is too much... then after a year take a holiday and then do the $20 per week as a voluntary contribution and you too will get a 100% return. I choose to do the 2% as then my employer matches it as well... I think its money for nothing and don't miss it... Will really appreciate the bonus when I retire. Well thats me for this morning... take care JB toadfish - 2010-01-07 05:59:00 |
| Ooh Ooh Ooh And another thing I have done.. I have some family birthdays coming up in February so I brought the presents this week to "cash in" on all the sales. Now I don't have to worry about them closer to the time and pay full price.. feeling quite chuffed that I have it sorted... and wrapped!! So work out your up and coming birthdays that you need to buy for... toadfish - 2010-01-07 06:08:00 |

Maybe other posters could help us with the chocolate bar names... or you could just go to Foodtown and look for inspiration. PS We had a mustang we sold 2 years ago, will have a look around the house to see if we have any little trinkets that you can have... think there might be a Mustang Keyring somewhere.... Will see....
