I reckon you can never have too much wool either

#Post

Morning ladies, I managed to get one of the lawns mowed yesterday and the strip of weeds (which passes as lawn) down the side of the driveway and just as I put the mower away it started to rain, and was pretty miserable all day.

Went to knit and natter and came home with a friends knitting as she can't work it out and seem to get it right, so said I would try. She's not in a hurry for it, so I might have a go at it later today.

Working at the op shop this afternoon - doing a shift for my neighbour as she is trying to get her house tidied up for visitors - hmmm, mine still needs work before Paul arrives, but I'm not too bothered about it. He's coming to see me and isn't too bothered about a bit of clutter or dust! But I do like it to be reasonably tidy.

Have a super day everyone, try to stay safe and dry.

Morning all - just a bit of drizzle here - hope it doesn't hit Edgecombe again - remembering cyclone bola was terrible here in the Bay and the one heading their way could be worse - my son down south is near mosgeil had very heavy rain but no flooding in his area
My son brought me some yummy brioche Easter buns last night his new bakery manager had made they are perfection - having the last one for breakfast

Afternoon
The rain has arrived but not too bad. Was out at the factory and had a couple of rather heavy downpours the little car didn't like the grassy rise to get out and was starting to skid so we packed up quickly and came home don't want to get stuck out there.

So far have been strong willed and not brought any Easter buns but did have some at Mainly Music, they smelt too good to not try them. But brioche ones sound very tempting, good job I don't know where to find them.

Lovely afternoon to get out the knitting and my book.

Jayemtoo - they are at Napier City paknsave - took one out to my Mum for her lunch she loved it - Saturday they are going to do blueberry and orange peel I hope - Mum tells me her mum used to make buns using these two fruits

wow have we had some rain or what!! There is serious flooding down the road and the paddocks across the road are flooded - I bet they are pleased the maize has all been cut! The creek behind us was full to the brim when I saw it earlier this evening and the main road outside our home has been closed as there are slips on the Kaimai Ranges. There is finally a lull in the rain so the Furry One has ducked outside to do his business. He hates being wet so it's been a very long day for him lol.

The rain has stopped here but the wind is something else - I hope the top story roof will still be here in the morning - sounds like it is trying to visit the neighbours - my brother who is out at whirinaki beach has just had alterations done to the front of his house and they now have a swimming pool inside - the water has just poured in the new glass sliding doors - not happy
Will be pleased when it is morning at least our power hasn't gone off

gerry64 - 2017-04-13 22:15:00
11707

Morning ladies, I think we escaped the worst of cyclone Cook up here, Wednesday the weather was worse than it was yesterday, but I discovered that a rather large chunk of punga has snapped off and landed on the roof, and it will be a two or three man job to safely remove it, so pleased that Paul will be here tomorrow and can get that organised, it's certainly too big a piece for me to attempt to move on my own - and of course it's on the high part of the roof. Now I know what that rather loud bang was the other night, I nearly jumped out of my skin, but looked outside and couldn't see what could have caused it.

Spent the afternoon yesterday at the op shop, did a shift for my neighbour. I was out the back most of the time sorting stuff - amazing the stuff that comes in. There was some cones of 2 ply wool, which I gave to my friend, and she was going to use it double or maybe even treble or quad and make something for the shop to sell, but she messaged me last night to say it was full of bugs, and things that looked like silverfish, so she binned it. Probably just as well she took it or we could have ended up with bugs all through all the stuff waiting to be sorted.

I brought home a rather nice necklace to mend, half the catch is missing and I probably have one in amongst my beading stuff.

Well I suppose I should crack on, I've still got a bit of tidying up to do and I want to wash the floors and vacuum in the lounge. Tomorrow I will go to Kerikeri in the afternoon, well Waipapa which is a bit north, it's where the Warehouse is. I have a couple of things to return and I want some veg plants, and then I will go straight from there to the airport to collect Paul and his son.

Hope everyone has a lovely Easter and hasn't suffered too much damage in yesterday's wild weather.

Have a lovely day.

morning ladies and Happy Easter :) We survived the rain and wind and it is very quiet with SH29 still closed thanks to the slips on the Kaimai Ranges.

I went out this morning while there was no traffic and rain to take some pics.

We're expecting our daughter and her family but wouldn't be surprised if they flag the visit.

Happy knitting :)

Good morning - we had huge storms in Bathurst but have never heard wind like that ever - all my trees are looking very battered and bruised but are ok - many trees around Napier haven't been so lucky - haven't heard from my brother this morning I think he will be regretting having all the front of his house turned into a glass wall - he said the glass was buckling - they are very close to the sea which was absolutely pounding in - very scary
That's a lot of water kiwimade - yes your daughter will be no doubt considering traveling - friends of mine were heading to Taupo but are having second thoughts
The baby I am making the doll for is not due until June but has stopped growing so she can be only left another 2 weeks before being born - scary times ahead for my lovely niece - she is a cancer survivor so this pregnancy was a miracle from day one - life is a bitch sometimes - please excuse my swearing

11711

you are absolutely right about life Gerry.

Daughter phoned and they think they can get through, I looked on the Land Transport website but I think it was crashing as it wouldn't load. Then when I did finally get onto it, there was nothing about road closures. But I did find an 0800 phone number for them to try, I guess that will be overloaded too. So we will see them when we see them, if at all.

11712

Morning everyone.
We have had very little rain overnight. The road was still dry at 5am, but it has rained since. Next to no wind. And we have blue sky with dark clouds on the edges.
Thats alot of water Kiwimade.. I have a friend in Tauranga whose previous partners brother is a trucky and he wanted to know what the roads were like.. I told her without even looking that id gaurantee the kaimais were shut, this was tea time last night. So I assume he didnt make the trip.

We had a fair bit of rain yesterday but managed to stay dry...

Have to wait 5 working days for my new glasses, so that will be nearly a couple of weeks by the time we add in the long weekend lol.. I dont mind too much, Ill just be pleased to have them.

I didnt do any crochet yesterday, after my marathon effort the day before. But I will start a cushion today.

Stay dry and safe everyone.. Be careful on the roads and Happy Easter..!!

11713

Morning,
That is wet Kiwimade.
Well certainly a bit breezy last evening. Went to aquarobics but had to get out a bit early as the council told them to close the pool.
Lost power for about 4 hours - got my little old lantern out but found I only had a few drops of kerosene in the bottle but fortunately enough to last till I wanted to go to sleep. Will get more tomorrow it's Good practise for next emergency. Fortunately the storm was moving past quite quickly, it was quite strange how it was very windy and in about 5 minutes it just seemed to stop.
Just been for walk around park, it's beautiful out sunny with a gentle breeze. Some trees down but not nearly as much damage as I thought there might have been and dogs are having great fun in the surface flooding there.

Do hope the baby is ok Gerry, it's great how they can monitor their progress and prems certainly do so much better these days.
Now to hang out the washing, lovely day for drying - just hope it lasts!

Good Morning Everyone. We got off lightly here in Napier.. Yes we had rain strong winds. No power cut here around us. Now a lovely sunny day..Washing out on the line.

Mr Cook made it onto the news in England. A long list of messages from family and friends waited me this morning. Heard from family up around
your way kiwimade also. Some have land under water and a few rivers
have broken their banks.
Sorry to hear about your niece's baby. There a lot they can do these days for babies.
Have friends coming from Rotorua expect them around lunchtime. Roads are all open for them..
Happy Easter to you all.

Nothing out of the ordinary in Wellington, the eastern side may have had it worse. Sunflower I hope the medics can get your BP lowered..if you want
/need your own monitor I recommend Omron off the web. I had mine tested against the Doctors one and it was near enough the same. Popeye, navy and pink alone make for a nice look. I followed a hint from recipe board and the little jam I make, my raspberries, and now freeze.instead of doing an ice cream container and scooping out a dish full I use small containers. I think it is due to the sugar, like in meringues, that prevents solid freezing. Blackberries this year mostly didn't mature maybe due to the non existent summer. Your flood photos were good to see kiwimade, I was thinking of those of you in Hawkes Bay in the dark last night. I was given some pink DK wool, to nice for beanies and enough for a second size jumper, well I hope enough! Simple pattern on front and back yokes and I am quite enjoying it, years since I have done anything other than beanies. How old is Paul's son?

marywea - 2017-04-14 10:48:00
11716

Marywea - he is 13 (today I think) he's 3 or 4 days younger than my own younger grandson and apparently is 1.71m tall, which is a good few inches taller than me. Obviously takes after my husbands side of the family, whereas my daughters two children both take after my side of the family and have their bums quite close to the ground!

kuaka - 2017-04-14 12:04:00
11717

That's a good idea Marywea about freezing jam. It hadn't occurred to me to do this which is odd as freeze just about everything else. I eat very very little jam but have it in the fridge for visitors but it often goes "sugary" before I get to the bottom of the jar.

jayemtoo - 2017-04-14 12:54:00
11718

One of my sister in laws freezes her jam too.. with only being on her own.. I had forgotten. I must start doing the same actually cos ours seldom gets finished before it starts crystalising in the bottom.
MrP has a Panchant (sp?) for Jam on cheese lol.

Have had more rain this morning, but its lovely and fine now.

My nephews birthday today, 29 and an ex friends youngest son is 27.

Ever since I decided to get my friend some oxtail for her birthday I havent seen any in the supermarket, so I will ring the butcher on tuesday and cross my fingers to get her some.. not as cheap as the old days but I know she will love it.

Have started the cushion, done 9 rows and its looking good so far.

Have asked my brother if they have developed webbed feet yet, they live on the Hauraki plains near Thames and will no doubt be very wet.

Have a good day all

11719

morning ladies :) I have never thought of freezing jam, what a great idea! I freeze excess fruit all weighed and ready for making jam though.

It's going to be a busy day with our grandies, not much knitting gets done while they are here.

I found a pattern for a scarf I can use some 1ply alpaca wool I bought a couple of years ago. It's lovely and light and lacey and I can finally knit up the wool :)

happy knitting :)

Morning ladies, what a stunning looking day we have here, but a bit nippy, I've put the heat pump on, but won't need it to be on for long. I still have some housework to do, and I need to vacuum the car and sweep the dead leaves up off the deck - thanks to cyclone Cook. Then after lunch I will head to Kerikeri to get a few groceries (including something for tea) and then go to the warehouse, and finally the airport. Getting excited now. Paul is such good company, so handy round the house, and so much like his father - I will enjoy his visit and miss him when he's gone again.

The 1ply alpaca scarf sounds lovely kiwimade, last year I made a 2ply cowl in possum/merino, haven't worn it yet, but it's gorgeous.

Have a super day everyone, and those who are out on the roads, stay safe, those who have family staying, enjoy the time together.

Morning everyone,
Just had a rather heavy shower, nearly coming in the ranch slider. not cold by any means. Still sleeping with the fan on at night.
Wow 1ply will be a light knit thats for sure.. hope your having fun with the grandies Kiwimade.

Enjoy your time with Paul Kuaka, how long are they here for?

I have to pop up the road this morning for bread. No doubt there will be other things lol.
Im hoping the cheapie store is open. MrP is rather down at the mo. His big brother was nearly arguing with him yesterday about on of their nephews, who is Our Boy. telling MrP he is sponging off his mother in Edgecombe.. He actually lives in Invercargill and is not at his mothers. but it has upset mrP a bit so Im hopeing to get a rooster I saw in there a few weeks ago.

Started the cushion yesterday and have 13 rows I think it was, so very pleased. And sewing my ends in as I go, cos I didnt on the other ones and it aint easy getting to the middle, lol.

Have a lovely day everyone. Be careful on the roads and dont eat tooo much chocolate

popeye333 - 2017-04-15 09:18:00
11722

Morning
Enjoy your visitors Kuaka and Kiwimade.

Did heaps in the garden yesterday and will take it to the dump today. Even washed the car which badly needed it after spraying up all the mud at the factory.
That little storm was a good eye opener as to what was missing from my emergency kit, will get more kerosene today kerosene isn't something I usually use.
We used hurricane lanterns a lot when I lived in PNG many years ago and I had brought one when I got back to NZ for power cuts, it doesn't get much use but is so much safer and effective than candles. Only draw back it can be a but smelly. Not sure if you can even buy them these days.

jayemtoo - 2017-04-15 09:28:00
11723

Morning all - yes it's a beautiful morning here -
Went out yesterday and saw some of the beautiful trees down - MCDonald Street which is very near me suffered really badly - very old large trees sad to see
The food bank here won't take anything with a broken outer packaging even if the actual product inside is still protected by shrink wrap or a plastic bag - so yesterday when I went down to see my son I put a few Easter bunnies in a box and gave them to a large family at the back of me who I know struggle - asked the mum first to make sure I wasn't going to offend her - kids don't notice if the box isn't perfect - actually it makes me angry their rational is why should the needy accept the not perfect - rant over
The 2ply will be like wearing a feather kiwimade
Hope the rooster cheered Mr P up Popeye -
I too Jayemtoo realised my disaster kit is fairly sparse - MrG was my disaster kit keeper so have a list of things next time I go up to the supermarket
Better get cracking dog is nagging

hurricane lights are something I haven't seen for years! There must be something equivalent to them if you can't find any. Kerosene is sold in the litre bottle I think.

Our grandson has figured out how to roll so is now on the move. he rolled a couple of times and we think that was just fluke. Yesterday he was sooo frustrated trying to roll and then this morning he did it. Now our granddaughter has figured out very quickly to move her toys she doesn't want our grandson to 'touch!' Let the fun begin lol.

Good Morning Everyone. Good to hear everyone fine and enjoying our lovely warm sunny weather.
Yes Gerry it is sad to see these great trees down around our streets.Let's hope our council gets into gear and gets a planting program up and running asap. We need trees around our city.

Dyed some wool yesterday with a friend and may do more over the w/end. Good time to do it as we use a lot of wool over winter knitting and weaving. So glad we can get it in bulk lots.
Spend the morning working out a wall hanging pattern and colours for an order. No pictures etc as its going off shore at this stage.

KIwimade your granddaughter was quick off the mark in moving her toys from little brother. LOL
Enjoy your time with Paul and his son Kuaku.
Time to move as I want to head off to the farmers market and pick up a couple of orders I put in last Saturday.
Happy Crafting and Enjoy your families.

Missed out, dammit.. I should have brought it earlier... Hes chuffed I tried tho.
The supermarket was absolute bedlam... Only sight of easter eggs were $12 lindt ones...
Did manage to get some hot cross buns tho.. No $1 bread... so it wasnt really a successful trip.
They at least had all the checkouts open today. But you needed about 6 sets of eyes out in the car park.

Shouldnt need to go out now till shopping day.

Have fun in all you do

Afternoon ladies, well Paul and Axel arrived safely, the plane was 10 minutes early and I was sitting in the departure lounge (that's a joke, it's just a room with a few chairs!) knitting, saw the plane land, and taxi round and thought "they always take ages before off-loading the passengers, so I'll just finish this row" and when I walked through to where the passengers walk into the building I couldn't see them approaching the building, next thing Axel came up and gave me a hug, and Paul was sitting watching.

Paul cooked a bbq last night, and we enjoyed several glasses of wine, talked for hours then had a game of snooker.

This morning he has shifted the piece of punga which had fallen onto the roof, did it on his own using ropes and a tree higher up the bank so we didn't need to call on anyone else for help. They have just gone out to the boat and now it's raining hard. I hope they will wait in the car for the rain to stop. He's going to try to start the motor, and if the batteries are too flat, he will bring them home to charge.

He was quite surprised at the changes I have made re the furniture and approves of it all, he said I've obviously been busy, and also approved of the big totara going - when I told him the neighbours had paid to have it taken out, he thought that was even better.

Well I have a few things to do, so I had better get on. Hope this rain stops soon, but at the moment it looks like it's set in.

Have a super day everyone.

Good evening all, I hope that you are all enjoying a safe and happy Easter weekend :) I have a query that I'm hoping that someone here can help me with - I am wanting to knit a Hitchhiker scarf which can be knitted in any ply wool. I have 200gr of both 4 ply and 8 ply wool here but am wondering which ply wool would go further - I would do the 8ply on size 4.5 needles with the 4ply on needle size either 3.75 or 4. I presume that the 4ply version would have a greater number of 'teeth' than the 8ply would! I have both pure wool and a wool mix to use which I know wouldn't go as far as acrylic which has a greater meterage to it. If anyone has already done the Hitchhiker in either of these plies, your help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much :)

morning ladies :) What a busy day we had yesterday as our son was home as well.

Our grandson learned to roll Saturday and yesterday was up on his knees rocking. This morning, he brought his knees up and 'crawled' before flopping onto his tummy. So crawling won't be far away. Our granddaughter has already figured out to move her toys out of his way.

Justme, I haven't knitted this shawl but I suspect 4ply would have a nicer, lighter finish than doubleknit (8ply). And by the sounds of it you will have plenty of 4ply.

I've knitted a few rows on my scarf, it's certainly different knitting 1ply alpaca but I can see once finished and blocked it will look pretty. Our daughter was eyeing up the wool lol, keeps saying how soft it is. I can take a hint lol so might knit her one for her birthday.

I hope everyone has had a happy Easter.

Happy knitting :)

Morning everyone,
Looks like a real mixed bag weather wise.. very windy. And looks like its pouring in the Waikato.

How old is Michael now Kiwimade? it only feels like a couple of months since he arrived lol

I have woken with a horrible headache... Im guessing the pollen is a part of it. cos the window I always have open, which is protected from most of the wind is less than 4 meters from a privet tree. The front of the house is far to windy to open today.

I havent crochet in the last couple of days. Just enjoying a wee break.

Hope everyone is careful on the roads if travelling today..

Have a fab one

Morning
Privet is terrible for allergies Popeye, we had one next door but several neighbours petitioned the landlord and it was taken out and made such a difference to several of us.

Enjoying the nice weather - although we had a small thunder storm yesterday pm. Took a very full car load of garden waste to the local composting place and was delighted to find it was free this weekend to take all the stuff that had blown down in the storm. Mine wasn't storm rubbish but they let me dump it for free too.

Have managed to get rid of a bit more wool this weekend with a couple of beanies and a small vest. Still have quite a bit of leftover wool to get through so will plod on with charity knits until I think of something else to do.

A peaceful quiet still day here.. Not too hot either which is nice. A rather heavy dew.
Our lawns are due today so it wont be quiet for long. definetley shorter than the last mow.
MrP is still in bed, the family crap that is happening is getting him down I think.

Ive had enough time off from my crochet so will be back on that today.. Cant say I like the colours but someone else might.

Very quiet without all the school traffic and kids playing at school, and weird once again not to be seeing the flag.

Morning all - chilly start to the day here - my cousin has her two grandchildren aged 5 and 3 she just messaged could she meet me at the dog park this morning - methinks she may be already be feeling rather overwhelmed - she is in her late sixties so it's a big ask on her own - but wasn't going to venture out today
Popeye do you find if you are not absolutely tickled pink with the colours that it seems to take so long to get whatever it is finished - I still haven't finished the doll - just don't like the way the body and head are one piece - not sure why
Well better go and find some of my Bathurst cold weather jackets

Morning ladies, definitely much cooler here today, I've just put washing out on the line and the wind is quite cold. Only 15 deg in my open plan living area so I've put the heat pump on.

Paul has just gone out to see if he can get parts for the outboard motor. It's a long story. Mr K gave the outboard motor to the mechanic we used when we lived at Russell, because the motor was going but wasn't putting water through and he didn't want it to overheat. The mechanic had it for probably 3 years, and every now and again Mr K would phone him and ask what progress he was making, and he would say "it's soaking in penetrating oil because I can't get the propeller off". Well after Mr K passed away I phoned the mechanic and told him I wanted the motor back, going or not, and I would get someone else to fix it. Paul pulled it apart yesterday and there's no needle valve in the carburetor and the button you press to stop it is missing, gone completely. So the mechanic obviously used parts from it to fix someone else's motor, which was why he didn't want to give it back. We are both absolutely fuming over it - and nothing we can do about it.

We have a bbq arranged for tomorrow evening for the neighbours to meet Paul, so today while I'm at mah jong this afternoon Paul will go and get some groceries. I suddenly thought I might not have enough plates, but I do.

We went to the club last night for the membership draw, which was won, we had one frame of snooker there and I asked Axel to go and count how many times his granddad's name is up on the "champions" board for snooker and billiards. He came back and said "16". Pretty impressive.

Haven't done any knitting or crochet since Paul arrived, but it is so nice to be able to spend time with them, I know I will miss them when they go. Hopefully it won't be too long till they come again.

Have a super day everyone.

afternoon ladies :) I've had a busy morning doing dad's garden for him.. well cutting out a very big noxious weed. It's done now and that's the main thing. Groceries are done, some potting mix and frost cloth bought, washing hung out and bought in bone dry.

lol just4me, the 4 ply will feel a little weird at first but then you will go back to doubleknit and it will feel chunky!

I would be fuming too kuaka, pity you can't say something about it to him.

Popeye, our grandson is now six months old. Time sure goes by fast with littlies!

Happy knitting :)

morning ladies :) I mowed the lawn yesterday afternoon as the day so lovely and warm. The grass had dried out quite a bit but had thickened up with MrK's spray of 'weed'n'feed'.-
The empty wheelie bin is pretty full lol.

Housework today then I'll potter on with my scarf. Have a few freesia bulbs to plant too, I bought them yesterday on sale and they should have been in the ground a month ago.

We're still picking our figs and I'm thinking of buying a dehydrator to dry them for the winter. I had some for lunch yesterday with blue vein cheese, ommg so good. Can any of you ladies recommend a dehydrator? I've never used one before but can see it will have many uses here.

happy knitting :)
