GST Got this info from Trademe guidelines on Tax and GST.The following has been pasted from this.
Profits on these sales are not subject to income tax
If you fall into this category then the goods you are selling weren't purchased with the dominant purpose of resale, nor were they sold as part of a business. In these circumstances the sale of personal property isn't subject to income tax.

more on GST You are correct Rebel58. If your turnover is less than $40,000 you don't need to be GST registered. If you are buying items with the purpose of resale then you are suppost to pay income tax on the profits. By the way I do pay tax on my profits as a part time dealer.

NZ Post no refund for lost mail(Track and Trace ) Below is an extract from a Trademe members Email.I have contacted NZ post and I can verbally verify these facts ,but nothing on paper. As follows:-- The bottom line is that no stamps mint or used, of any country, are send able with NZ Post with any method they have. The only exception is if they are being sent overseas, in which case you can buy insurance in some cases. What they do on there brochures is have a list of categories, such as Under $250 and over $250 value, but the stamps are banned altogether just the same as cash (although you can send them at your own risk, just like cash, they won't stop you).

#2 Track trace and courier post continued The used stamps fall under the category of collectibles, although they are not mentioned by name, it is the same story.
Fastway couriers do provide insurance for stamps and jewelery etc, and they are one of the few services who do.

#3 track and Trace Courier post Fastway couriers do provide insurance for stamps and jewellary etc, and they are one of the few services who do.
My main gripe is that I think NZ Post are deliberately being ambiguous about it to get the business without the responibility, which was effectively outlawed when the consumer guarantees act made businesses responsible by law for their services. I have sent a letter to Fair Go and to the Commerce Commission about NZ Post.
My main concern on Trademe to do with this matter is that traders should know the truth of the matter, because it took me ages to get the real story, so I know there will be plenty of other people who think their stamps are covered when they are not.

NZ Post conveniently give special dispensation to Stamps Centre so that they can legitimately send stamps and coins to collectors through the mail. Great, what about us?

melissah2 re SG move with the times!!!!!!! Stanley gibbon needs to grow up and move with the times and put the catalog on CD as Scott do ,I recently purchased one and it is great and in a lot of cases even more informative than SG.I go to the Library to get the worldwide SG in color catalogs and they weigh a ton.

1106-8 Post Offices all over the world get ripped off, hence the grey area in dealing with collectibles.

The solution is to insure in manners possible, or write off loses, always refund.
Nothing sent is practically guaranteed- social society is flawed.

New Buyers Would anyone like to offer a cautinary note how to respond to new buyers, who are keen payers of a low valued item to obtain feedback.
It would seem that trust is not always instilled with a first purchase either way !

philafarinz - 2009-02-01 13:08:00
1115

1113 I don't refund for non-delivery. I sold some electronic components which the buyer said he didn't get. I put in a claim with the PO, and the buyer wouldn't respond to their enquiry. When I emailed the buyer, he blamed his flatmates, and bought some more from me also. I don't want to encourage this sort of thing. The stamps should be treated like any other goods.

1114 New Buyers No cautionary Note ?
Judging from the non-response no Seller has had any problems from a first-time Buyer - absolutely wonderful !!

New Buyers I have dealt with several first time buyers and found that almost all of them were great to trade with. Only once have I had a first time buyer who never paid or contacted me. I wait until the money shows in my acount before shipping to someone I haven't dealt with before so if they don't follow through with the trade I just claim back my sucess fee and place the appropriate feedback.

I just had a reply from Trademe about sending stamps in the post or via courierpost. They expect us not to advertise those options. Here is an extract "...I would suggest, that as you know that these items cannot be sent via NZ Post that you do not provide it as an option."

carzx - 2009-02-03 14:08:00

NZ post I still offer NZ post at buyers risk. unless they use Fastway Couriers.

May sort out this NZ Post mess yet. I had a phone call from my MP this evening in reply to an email. She is going to contact the minister to see why we can't send stamps in the mail.

carzx - 2009-02-03 19:40:00
1122

1118 That's about the right way going about it.
Then there are those who buy a 20c item from a seller and just want good feedback because they paid quickly !!

NZ post also posts stamps !! Are they doing this illegaly !!?
I think this is a storm in a tea cup and we are getting ahead of ourselves.

1109 Donaldo --further more -the 'trackable' registered international air packs are not tracked once they leave nz--

I would say no Postal authority processes trackable international registered mail once outside borders of Country of origin.

The Courier services fill this niche at extra cost to the Sender.

philafarinz re NZ post I think the main bone of contention is that most collectors of anything could be under the misconception that the object ( All collectibles)that they are sending or receiving is covered for loss.NZpost does not give a clear ruling on this and in some instances will contradict themselves.I have an Email from them saying that they will cover sometimes but it depends on who you are dealing with at the time and I presume what time of day it is ,if they have a hangover ,or if they got lucky last night. What we should have is a CLEAR policy with no Grey areas.
Regards Paul.

1114 New Buyers I have no problem with new buyers it does prove that they more than likely have a legitimate address. A sale is a sale and feedback good and bad is a good indication of how good/bad the trader is.Any problems and maybe you should sell to address verified Traders only as some do.Every one on Trademe has this option. I love to see new Traders in Stamps and try encourage them as they are few and far between.
Regards Paul.

Well that sounds wonderful, though I can not see Germany use US postal services !
Nonetheless if the the US provides such service other Countries could and should follow suite if conditions are similar.

1108 Lost mail inter- or national supplied with a detailed Invoice would most probably not cover replacement value on stamp.

If a Watch is sold and sent via Post or Courier, when lost the insured amount should replace the watch's value.

Stamps sent can hardly be replaced immediately. So my green Maritius although identifyable, if pirated will need to be sold on the black market.

Somehow stamp collectors have been getting the short-end of the stick for many years.

1141 As a matter of interest what is worth collecting [no I don't mean as a money 'worth'] in NZ. Personally it has to be £sd issues [pre 1967] although I have lapsed with self adhesives, booklets and CALs in the $ era.

re 1144. hi... The Pitcairn is popular enough and I for one am always happy to buy it and Tokelau since 2000 is also fine but Tokelau from start to 1985 is as hard as it gets to sell. The theme sometimes helps but some of the Tokelau sets are badly designed and of course I've never met a single Tokealuan who collects. Actually I've never ever seen a single commercially used envelope or from an individual Tokealuan on Tokelau Island.

Stamp flaws and errors and a few other Questions.. Hi there, I have a few questions please- 1. Can you please tell me where is a good website to go to learn more about looking for flaws and errors. I have a foreign stamp with an obvious flaw, and one nz flying bird colour shift i think?? 2. I have a few mint canal zone stamps (with issue number attached to corner stamp), and mint older french polynesia stamps is there a market in nz for these ones, they seem SG prices high in value? 3. is it better to list NZ and UK (usa and other countires) stamps on trade-me in bulk or smaller lots 4. should i remove make off paper or leave it on on recent issued stamps? 5. any update on the nz postal problems i bought stamps in the last few weeks and all had option of sending by normal post, courier is far to expensve for small amounts of used stamps?? - thanks for your help in advance
