Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again

Well done PETER you have won the race again, where you are the only competitor .
You definitely are a STAR.

If I'm honest, it was that close I thought about it, but I got drawn away. Ah, well, roll on 2,000.....

Looks pretty good, lester. AU sounds about right. Hard to be certain. Maybe another pic in natural light? Pity about the brooch.

I've started picking up some pieces that have been made into jewelry just for the novelty factor. I've got a French piece that's been made into a button-hole cover, if you know what I mean. Not quite a cuff link, but it has two bits welded to the back that slip through a button hole and flip in opposite directions and hold it in the hole. I also made a holed one franc coin (c. 1917) into a charm and hung it on a necklace for my French niece.

USA..1915s BUFF NICKEL is back up for sale again please read the text in the auction...lol

TM (because of a "cartel request") pulled the plug.
Here is their reason
it doesn't appear to be genuine or realistic: Who is TM to decide

We (TM) don't allow listings that could be considered time-wasting or fictitious, in part, due to the amount of complaints they tend to generate (from the coin cartel?)

Can anyone recommend someone in Christchurch who can have a look at some old coins for me . Plenty of pennys , from 1900 to 1960's , half crowns , florins shillings half pennys , sixpence , threepence in the same date range . Also some pound and 10 shilling notes as well as a few coins stamped as from Great Britain , which I guess are from before New Zealand had it's own coins . Any advise would be great - cheers

Are you planning to sell them or do you want to get a value for insurance purposes? If you want to sell them, your best bet is to take good photos and list them here. If you have not taken pictures of small objects, practice a good bit first until you can take reasonably clear photos.

No I've been up a few hours, I've been on days off. I finished on Xmas morning, but not looking forward to going back as I inadvertently caused a bit of chaos at work!

Thanks for that , yes the intension is to sell them . I was hoping someone could give an idea as to who would be best to place a value on the coins / notes , rather than make a random choice and end up with them being way undervalued by someone looking for a bargin .

Well, if time is on your side, with good photos you'll likely realise the best return on TradeMe. On the other hand, if you want to make a quick sale, take them to a couple of coin shops and see what you're offered. I would be wary of anyone that pressures you unduly to sell, especially if interested in only, say, five coins. One of those coins is probably worth a lot. On the other hand, offers may only be good for the time you're in the shop, and that's fair enough.

A little research online will provide you with some idea in advance of going into a shop:

For British coins:
http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/coins.html

For US coins:
http://www.pcgs.com/prices/default.aspx

For world coins:
http://www.ngccoin.com/poplookup/World-Coin-Price-Guide.aspx

These guides are just that: guides. And they provide an idea of retail prices/values. So consider vehicles: There is the price you might pay at a used car dealership versus through a private sale. Likewise, there is an insurance replacement value. None of them is "wrong", it just depends on which you're looking at. So a coin trader who runs a shop is, like a car dealer, going to buy for less than he'll sell. The difference keeps the shop open, pays rates, power, wages, etc.

Hi people.
Just wondering if a first mint, july 10th 1967 set of ordinary uncirculated coins, still sealed in the pkt is worth anything.
The paper sealed in the set says.
Ordinary Uncirculated Coins.
First Mint based on $ c System. NZ changed to decimal coinage July 10th 1967. Made by Royal mint. London. Issued by The Treasury, Wellington NZ.
The sealed coins are 1c 2c 5c 10c 20c 50c and a large silver $1.00 coin.
Many thanks.

Well, smoocher, NZ coins are not my specialty, but it seems these were made in such large numbers and kept by so many people, and demand is so low, that they tend not to be worth a lot. However, I gather a few of these packets have coins with errors that may make them worth a bit of money. If you post a pic here, someone more knowledgeable could offer more help.

No, there is a narrowness of vision that some people suffer from. They seem to think, "If it's older than me, it must have been around at the time of the dinosaurs and also MUST be worth HEAPS."

I was a bit bored this afternoon so I had a look through a pile of Threepence coins an found these
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/247710584.jpg
http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/full/247710514.jpg
The Elizabeth one has a large split across the face 1954
and the 1960 one has a slight clipped planchet by the an of Zealand
Interesting find for only 1/2 hour looking plus I found 7 others with die cracks.
I wonder how common these faults are.
