I reckon you can never have too much wool either

#Post
1051

Hi Im Popeye I hoard wool, cross stitch cottons, kits and books, buttons and I have this terrible addiction to self covering buttons. I buy them if I see them in oppies. Cannot leave them in the shop.
Ive only ever used them twice. Lol

We are sooo bad.. but I figure its better to hoard what we are, than be drinking or smoking etc etc... We have something to show for the money like.

I did a fair bit on sweetie yesterday.Today I will sew the front buttons on the dress. Make up the lollie sticks and sew them in the pockets. Sew the dress on, putting the back buttons on. Then make up the ice cream and apple. and it will be finished.. Will take all my time today I think
Have to pop up and post a parcel and do bloods at the lab.

Have a good day all. grotty weather out there

I am promising myself as soon as the wardrobe in the spare room is bulging I will stop!! Those self covering buttons were IT back in the day
Downloading patterns is also starting to trend out of control must have 50 afghan patterns ready for when I remember how to crochet
Lovely day over here in Bathurst - off to the dog park with my needles and wool to start a pair of slippers or maybe a scarf -start simple I think

The good thing is Gerry that You Tube has heaps of tutorials.

Lol at the buttons I have heaps.. just something else I cannot not buy when I see them.

Nice here at the mo, its windy its grey one side, sunny the other, light rain and a tropical 23 degrees lol..

Only have the ice cream and chocolate dipped apple to make up and sew onto doll. Stick some eyes on and then she is finished. Starting to look good too

gerry I download patterns but save them to an external hard drive. Then when I need/want them I print them off. Saves ink, paper and physical space... just need a new harddrive lol.

Ta-Da one Miss Sweetie. Finished her last night.. I feel she is out of proportion cos she doesn't have the lolly pops on her head. But she kinda looks ok.
11 days and 2 hours work.
Its fine this morning. So I will take her shopping.

Have a good day all. Have a few things to do before I can go out

Looks good popeye though I think she should be called Miss Sugar Shock!

I've just got back into the knitting again - so back into the Voltaren gel as well for the new aches (shoulder, hands, lower back). I don't remember knitting being this painful when I was a young sprite. Is it good or bad for one's arthritis?

I have just been reading all your thoughts regarding charity knitting. If we all thought that there would be no opp shops or charities anywhere. It is a risk we have to take.

I think it is the same with all charities, those doing all the work maybe take something for themselves but with out them items would go no where, and at least what is taken is used on a baby etc so it is not going to waste. I know t hat the opp shop workers get the pick of donations but you have to realise they do hours and hours of charity work.

If you are thinking about delivering in your area you can do what Pam and I do is still send the pics to beanies for babies to keep their total going. Afterall even if some does not go to the right people we know that most of it will.

Please rethink you options, Jo

smartgirl - 2013-04-18 12:32:00
1058

I know where you are coming from smartjirl.
BUT what i don't like is the fact that items were knitted for the babies in hospital NOT the staff that tend to them. If i knew that a nurse had taken an item that i took the loving time to knit for a newborn baby then i would have liked that nurse to at least pay for it (donate to a charity)
I'm not having a go at you personally as i do understand where you are coming from

whiskey13 - 2013-04-18 12:56:00
1059

Daleaway. I find knitting helps my arthritis. The stuffing on the other hand isn't good for my fingers. Its the use it or Lose it thing..

Smartgirl. For me I hate the idea that people working in good jobs are taking from those who really need the items at the time. Often premmies are so early that people are not prepaired with tiny clothes.
When I do get time to knit some wee beanies etc, I will take them to the med centre., I trust them there.

Sweetie is fantastic Popeye - you always seem to be able to put the right expression on their faces too I find doing faces really difficult and have to redo them several times so that they are not lopsided.
I agree with you Popeye knitting also seems to keep my fingers supple.

I use my scraps of wool to knit beanies and booties. A few of years ago I took them to Plunket and got a polite but casual thank-you as it getting such things was an everyday occurrence, that's ok but the next year I dropped them into a medical centre in one of the lower socio economic areas and you would have thought they were made of gold they were so appreciated and obviously from the surprised response they don't get donations like this very often so they are where I take them now as I am sure they are used by those who really need them.
I guess it is for each donor to decide where they would like to give their things.
I also knit prem. beanies for the babies in Tonga as although it is "tropical" their winters are coolish and prem. babies don't maintain their temperatures easily and it is not something most people think about that there is a need there too. They love the really bright colours too which is great.

jayemtoo - 2013-04-18 13:28:00
1061

Thanks Jayemtoo.. I find when I do the face I do the nose and mouth., but I never put the eyes on till last. Its like adding the soul to its face. sometimes just the right spacing is enough.

I wouldn't have thought about the Islands either for the new borns beanies etc.. I have a friend with a home in Rarotonga. I must ask her to find out who they could be sent to... or I can be cheeky and get her to take some home with her too. Since she doesn't have to take bags of clothes as she has the house equipped there too.

Ive started Uncle Angus. Done one foot anyway lol

Another wonderful toy popeye. You are so quick.

Had a lovely day in Ashburton on Tuesday. Went to Hands Ashford. I bought some Touch Yarn to knit a beret - they had one on display and it was gorgeous. I tried it on and it seemed to suit me. I just had to have it! I also bought a pattern for a doll and another pattern for a baby's jacket and hat.

Two nights ago I had almost finished the second sleeveless glove when I realised I had put the 'thumb' on the wrong side !! Fixed now and will finish off tonight.

Morning All...

ooh Pats another hat. I love hats...

Well I don't know where my head was last night. Thought Id start the second foot cos I wasn't sure how far the cream I was using for the legs would go.
So was knitting away talking to a friend on the phone. And realised I hadn't done the decreasing on the foot. Then got nearly to the same point as the first foot and realised id done two right feet... GRRR had to undo it again lol

Will carry on today tho. Hes a lot smaller than the others. So wont take long.

Jord I use a long darning needle and lease the stuffing into place without damaging the stitches. lol

Hello all, not getting much time to post this week, but lovely to see what you're all up too.
Glad you had a nice visit to Ashburton pats, the beret sounds lovely. I don't suit hats at all, but a beret might work for me. The Touch Yarn is lovely too.
popeye and pats I hope the knitting gremlin doesn't attack me today, I'm almost at the hem of the jacket I'm knitting!
It looks as though a lot of us are knitting to keep our hands working, I'm finding it difficult at present with a cyst on my finger, as well as the usual stiffness.

Have had a busy week, took daughter's rottweiler to physio twice, the initial consultation was very interesting and we have seen a slight improvement already. Am also doing massage and physio 3 times a day at home, although only doing 2 sessions today and just massage for the 3rd session. Fingers crossed this all pays off and he gets full use of his leg back after all his ops.

popeye your Sweetie is so gorgeous, you do such great knitting :) I'm really looking forward to seeing the bagpiper.

Hi to everyone else, hope you are all enjoying your knitting and having a good day xoxo

Hi Maible.. yes I think once the body and fingers get used to the knitting, it eases things. If I don't knit it seizes up. My fathers mother had bad arthritis in her hands, and Mum had it only not so bad.

Good that the massages etc are helping the Dog Maible. I used to massage my 12 yr old cat too who had arthritis in her shoulders and hips..

I am seriously crossing my fingers that I have enough wool to do the arms of the Piper, I think it will be close. Don't know where my head is with my knitting at the mo.

Ive done the main body piece, the nose and half his longs now.. I haven't done the stitching on them yet tho.

My right hand is fat. Normally the bad finger swells but the rest of it has gone out in sympathy. Im hopping using it will help it settle down again. Or I will have to see the dr. Even my rings are tight, which is very unusual.

Looks like it might be a typical Autumn day here and it will be a mix of everything

Sorry gerry but that brought a smile to my face - lol.

Have been busy doing messages this morning. Took the fingerless gloves over to my sister (birthday today) and she loved them.

Raining and cold here. Have heat pump on. Am going to turn TV on and watch a few programmes I've recorded and maybe start a new knitting project. Perfect day.

We woke to fog, and then we had rain, it was cool so had the heat pump on, but by lunchtime we had brilliant sunshine so I sat on the deck and knitted until the sun went into hiding. There's hardly any wind and it's now overcast. I guess it could be worse, and at least now the garden is sodden I don't feel guilty sitting knitting instead of weeding.

I have just got home from a day with our local spinners and weavers. We have been dyeing wool, painting wool and then we did some felting. We had a lady who came down from ChCh to show us. Tomorrow we are going to spin the wool that we have dyed and knit/crochet the silk we dyed. It has been a fun day and my head is spinning. Retirement is great - haven't got time to work lol. Have just lit the fire as the sun has gone down and it is quite dreary. It is Autumn. Have a lovely day ladies.

Sounds like a good day Floss... I really need to stop saying I want to learn flax weaving and more crochet and Just do it.

I must see what the college offer in course and ring the Marae too.

Mind you I don't hink the stupid fingers would handle weaving at the mo.. I have made an appointment with the dr to see why one hand is swelling, well basically to make sure its just the finger injury doing it, and nothing more sinister.
Have finished knitting the pants for Uncle Angus.

Gotta watch those Ockers Gerry lol...

We have had four seasons in one day that's for sure

WE badly need rain. They have said we are going to get it but each time it just goes around us. The last rain we had was before Xmas. Our lawn is looking sad and some of our plants are really struggling. We live in Clyde . Central Otago. The trees at the moment look fantastic, all the autumn colours.A lovely time of the year.

I didn't realise there were still parts of the country that are dry - apparently they had nearly 150mm of rain in the last 24 hours in Tauranga, 75 mm in two hours. That's a lot of rain. I hope you're not on tank water ffloss. I know what that's like, but we're on town supply now. Going to put my feet up shortly and do some knitting. Wonder how far I'll get before falling asleep.

Oooh, lucky you. I love Central Otago. Spent a night and day in Clyde about 4/5 years ago after my girlfriend and I did the Otago Rail Trail. Would love to spend more time down there.

Have started a baby's cardigan today. Am going to carry on with it now while I'm watching the rugby. Go the Crusaders - lol.

lol kuaka I'm not going to look as I've just spent over $100 there last week. I've nearly finished the green baby's cardy, one sleeve to go, then stitch the sleeves in. I've stitched the shoulders to the back and knitted the neck band. Have also knitted and sewen on the button/buttonhole bands so sewing in the sleeves is the last bit. I need to get some buttons, I saw some shaped as frogs and seeing as the colour of the cardy is a lime green thought they would look great!

Morning All.. Wow FFloss that's a long time without rain... I love the rain. Autumn, winter and Spring are my fave seasons.

Kuaka, I love the Wool Power.... Im waiting on my sister in law to save some money then we are putting an order in.. I wish I could do it now tho. The specials have been good just of late.

My hand is better this morning. Well just one swollen finger. Ive made an appointment anyway. Seems silly to be going to the dr with a sore finger. But it was the whole hand swelling that worried me. Have a form to be filled in so can do everything at the same time.

Have listings finishing today and need to sort the recycles and rubbish and washing to fold. Then I can knit. I have done the main body bit, his pants and one arm, oh and the wee nose. So getting there. Only started Thursday night (with all the undoing lol).

Have a good day all

popeye - going to the doctor with a sore finger isn't silly at all. Last year I injured my finger while I was stacking some firewood. A piece of tea tree fell on the knuckle, and after that my finger was sort of "spastic" - seemed to have a mind of it's own. I put up with it for a few weeks and it got no better, so when I also felt miserable with a sore throat I went to see my doctor, who announced that "they probably aren't related" when I said I had a sore throat and a sore finger. Anyway I had to have finger xrayed and see a specialist who gave me a cortisone injection, and said to come back in a couple of months if I needed a second injection. Course I didn't, but now my finger is sore and playing up again. I know it's just the same thing again (it's trigger finger and the cure is only temporary) so I guess I will have to go back to the doctor again. Might combine my visit with my 'flu jab.

It's overcast this morning and looks like we could have more rain - no gardening then - might have to spend some time knitting. What a shame - hehe.

Good Luck Gerry lol....

Kuaka, Gotta laugh at the dr saying the throat and finger weren't related lol...Im suspecting mines arthritis with the injuries. Sadly tho I cannot have anti inflamateries or cortiszone. The warfarin doesn't like it.. Even if I can use a volataren cream it might help.

Ive done the second arm this morning. the wrist bands and buckle. Have done one row of the stitchin on the pants. Thought Id make a start on that so I don't have a pile to do at the end.
Fine at the mo, but the fan is on and off all the time. I like cool moving air but it gets a bit chilly at times

Cold and wet here today. Didn't get out of bed until nearly 10.30 !! Can't remember the last time I did that - would have been 10-15 years ago, lol.

Have heat pump on. Going to make some soup and then sit and knit. Did the left front and half way up right front of baby's cardigan last night.

Have a Rosamunde Pilcher movie to watch that I had previously recorded.

Keen to hear how you got on in Round 2 Gerry, lol.

Well lets just say am waiting for the old boy to take the dog for a walk before I open the boot of my car -i got a big bag of odds and ends for $20 was much quieter today -I met a lovely old man who is a sock maker -said he bought a Martha Stewart loom and has so many orders from all the pensioner groups he belongs to he can't keep up -he was digging for all the 4ply so we worked in tandem
Talking about aches and pains my son bought me one of those machines from the chemist that sends electrical tingles -he bought the gloves as well and my hands are so much better not saying it has cured it but they are certainly improved enough for me to knit etc again

Morning all. Gerry I hope you managed to get the bag of goodies in and put away before doggies walk was finished... Cos you've had that stuff for ages eh lol. (once its in the room men don't know whats new and old)

I started the Hat for Uncle Angus last night. Just have the decreasing rows to do.. Going to be quite a big hat really.

Have to take the car to the garage shortly. Hopefully this time they will fix the leak properly.

Talk later. Have a good day all

morning! lmao gerry, of course you've had that wool for ages... don't you remember me knitting 'that colour' ....hehehe... love it. I do the same and sometimes wait for husband to go out before I bring stuff in. It's great having two cars lol.
Nearly finished the wee cardy I'm knitting, just the sleeve shaping to do which won't take long then it's finished except for the buttons.
Need to get some paint stripper today to strip some paint off a pine box our daughter made when she was in her teens. Am going to paint it baby mint green and might even try distressing the paint. The top is going to be blackboard paint so it can be used as a blackboard. Then she can have her box back (another thing of hers gone!) and can be used in the baby's room as a toy box. Amazing how much stuff she left behind when she left home so I'm getting quite creative at returning all her things lol.

Time to think about hats Popeye - made a couple for nephew and neice last week and last evening watched youtube and now doing a magic loop beanie, was surprised just how easy it was to learn and think I'll be using it for all my beanies from now on.

Off to entertain a 6yr old for 1st day of holidays - think a bus trip and lunch out will be fun so glad it has stopped raining - not sure if farmers will agree but sure a lot of mums will.

Kiwimade that sounds like fun. And a really good idea re the daughter timber box. Maybe it will go through many generations.

Jayemtoo, I love the rain, but yeah I imagine trying to keep the kids entertained for the next couple of weeks with wet weather wont be much fun.

Have taken the car down to the garage.. Got a loaner car, a Mazda. God you feel like your grating your bottom on the road after being in a Honda CRV lol

Nothing much happening here today so another day to work on Angus.
