:)... I was cheeky and went to my local supervalue
supermarket, and they had no size 16 chickens left for $6.99 so I asked when they would have them in as special had only just started that day and they said not till tomorrow, they know I go there twice a week to look at specials so I said can I pay for it now and you hold one and ring me when they are in, the shop owner said look I have one size 20 in the freezer that has been there since tuesday last week but frozen the whole time you can have that for $6.99, man I was stoked, and nthing wrong with it at all. Someone also said to ask for rainchecks on things that are in special but out of stock, so at countdown a few weeks ago tararua butter 500g was $2.29 so I asked for a rain check she said how many do you want to buy, I only asked for 2 but going to last me for so long.

SALE CLOTHES EZIBUY SYLVIA PARK Well I worked, went home made nacho Mince... picked the girls from School and we went to Sylvia Park..... They have the most amazing sale at Ezibuy... 70 % of racks of clothes... lots of winter but some other stuff. My work pants (that I had gone specifically for) ended up costing me $6!! - Think that was a mistake as they were new seasons and not from the racks. And then I got 2 x T shirts...only because I couldn't leave them behind for $3 each lol.... So my huge shopping foray cost me $12!! Someone is looking over me and my budget! Spent more on shouting the girls afternoon tea lol... but even then we managed to do that for 1/2 price using 2 entertainment coupons at different places... Got to love that book. Anyhoo we got home at 7.30! and how lovely to just serve up dinner..... If I wasn't organised Takeaways would have been tempting... But as it is my family consider Nachos a treat.. so everbody happy!

Entertainment book.... How we used it yesterday is we Used the Oporto Coupon... Their burgers are $8... what a rip off... so we upsized the one we brought to a meal with drink & Fries for $10 and got a "free" burger, so the girls had a burger each... one had a soft drink... and they shared the fries.. then I went to Gloria Jeans... Had my trim flat white and got a "free" Mochachino" for the other daugher. So yes expensive but we spent $15 (instead of $28) and teenage girls need a treat every now and again... well at least mine do lol. And as I said cost more than my work pants and 2 T shirts!!!

Think thats the crux of why I budget Is to live a champagne life on a beer budget... still do all the nice things but "smartly" I got exactly the pants I wanted after trying on the whole shop...didn't compromise & luckily got them for a steal.... The children got what they considered a huge treat... afternoon tea at a foodhall for 1/2 price.... we treat it like a game and while we were eating we added up what we have saved, we all get a huge kick out of it... as they said we could have a treat "twice" now for the same money as once would have cost us.

hi all, great to see this thread is still going strong, ive hardly had time to check in lately....i was whisked off on a whirl wind 2 day hol last week to Rotorua, apartantly im aging this Friday so it couldnt go un noticed so we had a blast, booked a private hot pool at Polynesian spa and soaked untill we wrinkled, went to a yummy restarant and had nice walks, we travelled to Mount Maunganui for a look at Matakana island where our trucks go over on a barge to get the wood we cart back to home so that was good to finally see it, we couldnt go for a ride on the barge as it would be 2 hours wait so that was a bummer as it was such a nice day, long walks lots of starbucks coffee, just what a girl needs then rushed back home for work on Thursday morning, boy the things we do aye.

Last Nights dinner was a "Budget Beauty" Macaroni $1.15, 300gms bacon Offcuts $2.00, Cheese about .75c Onion, butter, flour, mustard & milk... about 1.00 tops 1 x tomatoe (sliced on top) .50 tops. $5.40.... Macaroni Cheese for 4 huge plates and even better... cooked and on those plates in 15 mins.... Tonights dinner.... I brought at seperate times 2 x reduced to clear lamb trays... for $3 each. 1 was lamb casserole cubes (about 300gms) and 1 was 3 x lamb sholder chops. So I am going to cut the sholder chops in half and add the lamb cubes then make a crockpot meal of Lamb, Carrots, Onions & barley... one of our favourites & $6 for the lamb portion not bad...

wow, i find that the homebrand cheese sauce in a packet is cheaper than making it yourself it is 75c and then i put a bit of grated cheese on top of the macaroni once in dish, and a bit of rbeadcrumbs i made myself. I also put a tiny bit of herbs and pepper in it. so yummy, and the n serve with mixed vege and garlic bread that I make miyself. your a legend man, love your ideas. i get clearance meat from our local supervalue, and it always like $2 for enough for my family of 5, tonight we are having sausages but the continental ones, and they were only $2 usually up to $6

Wow, I have to say a huge thank you to Kob, Toadfish and all the other wonderful contributors to this amazing and oh so helpful thread! I have read it with interest before but have never had the extra cash to buy the box of lux flakes and soda crystals. Luckily my husband came to the rescue today and with some money he had squirreled away he splashed out and brought home a box of each! I have spent the afternoon and evening making washing liquid, shaving cream and I even made up my own body wash (using the shaving cream recipe, but just with extra water to make up to 500mls and then when beaten it makes up about 1 Litre - I just used it in the shower and it doesn't dry out the skin and has no strong smell). Thanks again, you are all angels :)

Manurewa New World has some dollar deals: watties tin fruit .99c, 1/2 doz eggs .99c so if you buy two that is only 1.98 for a dozen. Don't know if this is for all stores.

Well I just wanted to come back with some feedback The washing liquid is going so well, no strong smell, clothes still clean and excema seems to be getting better on both myself and my son. Hubby used the shaving cream this morning (he shaves both his face and head) and he was very happy with it, and my body wash is great! I made the 10L mix of the washing liquid, and I have estimated all the things I made only cost me $2, which is about a HUGE saving, esp on the shaving cream, so thanks again!

Budgeting I am thinking of changing my mortgage over as my interest is far to high. I went to NZ home loans and im waiting for approval on getting a loan to pay off mortgage, credit card, overdraft and more money for a car. In order to do this i need to stick to a budget which is something i have never done. I am a single parent with a 15 year old son, im a bit unsure about what amounts to use in my budget. Any ideas?
Has anyone used NZ home loans?

sapphirez - 2009-09-19 10:55:00

We use them, we switched just under a year ago They're great... but the constant thought of " if i spend that money on this- its xx amount of interest we will be paying on our loan vs' leaving the $$ in there, cutting or meeting; our mgge term,if we just go without for a bit longer... with my obsessive personality its made things stressfull as we're too often going without for the sake of our mgge... my advice would be to make a budget with "everything" we have a petty cash in ours (haircuts,vet,doctor,dentist,c-
lothes, rego, wof & maintenance, house decor) ..i'm sure my Obsessive is showing here at least... our petty cash is to put money aside for all of the non-predictables so there effectively is never a non-predictable expense. NZHL has a planner they install on your computer that has a budget in it you fill out.

--boss-- - 2009-09-19 16:36:00

--boss-- Thanks --boss--, i am quite scared about it all to be honest especially making my budget that includes everything. I have no idea how much i should be budgeting in it. I suppose i will just wait and see if it is approved then go from there i suppose.

sapphirez - 2009-09-19 17:05:00

The best way to do your budget would be to look at your bills from the last 6-12 mths and add a little bit to cover inflation over the next year.. powerbills are a good example.. winter close to 300 but summer as little as $60! huge variance.. so add them up and divide by the 12mts and we get an average of $160 a mth.. so thats what we budget, and any left each month sits in our petty cash kitty for the darer mths ahead. just always OVER budget, and you will be fine. I was so stressed before we changed over too.. it was scarier than purchasing our house in the first place and took a lot to get my head around, but we knew someone who'd already swapped and they showed us their budget and bank account with NZHL and that gave us a "real life" demo of how it worked, maybe you know someone who can give you a more personal (less business) approach to how it works.

--boss-- Power isn't so bad to budget for its the other things i find hard. I have rung sky and cut that off, we will miss my sky, sports and movies now, i don't think i can go without my broadband though. I will have to stop buying lunches and takeaways.

try... bundleofjoy its by woosh real cheap ph and net packages :) runs through telecom lines.. n you can keep your ph no. not sure if they do sky, but you'l miss that! sky's a luxury i'm still waiting for :( youl save heaps on lunches and takeaways they're expensive.. do you like chefs like destitute gourmet? library should have a few of her books :) your lucky to have your pwr bills under control. my worst spending is actually after dinner.. down to the packnsave or dairy for snacks... petrol is no issue so its just the junk addiction... we feel so deprived without our end of day snacks lol. wonder how common that habit is, apparently over the recession supermarket sales are actually up!

"sorted" website has a good budget planner something i also found with NZHL was they tried to push us to change all our insurance over to soverign.. its completely unnecessary and they're darer than our current provider too.. we use fidelity and AMI for all our insurance and have found them great.

Tips for living within a budget...... I treat it like a game... how can I make the most delicous meals, have the most fun family times, have great "token" presents to cheer people up for the least money...in other words ... HOW CAN I LIVE A CHAMPAGNE LIFE ON A BEER BUDGET. I haven't been well over the weekend but I knew Animates had 25% off my cats catfood. I brought the $100 9kg bag for $75... then went down the road and brought my fruit & Veg, the $25 savings off the catfood meant the huge Banana box of fruit and veg was free... then I went home and collapsed back on the couch... happy that I had won again and got in Essence a box of "Free" Fruit & vegies.

That was in answer to post #1077 by boss.... Another budget winner over the weekend. I had in the freezer a 900gm pack of bacon brought "reduced to clear" for $6. We had bacon butties crammed with bacon for lunch and then I used the streaky for Mac and Cheese for tea... so that $6 did a lunch and a dinner for 4.. and it was plentiful and delicious. Thats another tip for living on a budget... make sure you try and have abundance every now and again... yes I could have stretched that bacon out for 2 lunches but it was nice for a change to have heaps... and at $6 for 2 meals... still reasonable.

I have discovered Budget Multigrain bread... really cheap and really nice (made by Goodman Fielder... same people who make molenberg) So have been buying that lately.. much nicer than the rivermill type bread.

Follow the link to the fortune teller and you can win anything from $50 to $500, I won $100 as did my 2 daughters. The only catch that I can see is that I have another savings account (that I can close at anytime) that has no fees. I thought I may even leave my $100 there and add to it at $10 to cover xmas....... You should give it a go if you are not an existing customer. If you are entering more than 1 family memeber then all you need is more than 1 email.... Fantastic.

Tonights Meal on a budget We were going to have Nachos... but when I was at woolworths today they had reduced to clear Sahara Felafel Mix for $3.15 (half price expires tommorrow) so cooked the mince up for tommorrow and tonight we are having Felafel kebabs... yum yum. Lots of salad, yoghurt & sweet chilli sauce. We have found a Middle Eastern Takeaway in Botany South (Chapel Road - near the bridge to nowhere) That sell a bag of pitas (5 to a bag) for $1.80, we grab 5 Bags at a time and put them in the freezer as the girls love them (and we don't drive past that way often) So 5 x felafel kebabs (2 for hubby) for probably the cost of just 1 from the kebab shop. I also have some left over homemade vege soup so will serve that up as well to fill up the troops. I tell you its a game..... Another Champagne meal... on a beer budget!!!

we are having sausgaes tonight, the local supervalue, 2 minutes up the road has daily meat specials, they usualy have one or two days left on expiry and reduced dramatically, I buy sausgaes and its $5 for 6 sausages, good yummy ones, like lamb and mint, anyway I went to supervalue and they had 5 sausies for $2 so I bought 3 packets, for $6, so i look at it this way, we paid for one meal and got 2 meals free, love it, and they have them daily so I check it ut everyday that I walk my daughgter to kindy

Hey everyone, I was at the supermarket today and baulked at paying over $12 for 8 chicken drumsticks, so went for a walk to the freezer section and found a 5kg bag of mixed portions for $22.95. I just seperated it out into icecream containers and for our family of 5 (2ad, 3 ch) we will get 10-12 meals from it! So only $2.30 - $1.91 a meal! Yay for us. Well worth the look, and I'm so happy :) Hope eveyone else is saving well too

Yup I saved today was over the shore this afternoon so called into Schenleys Bakehouse after 3pm and got $52 worth of Paninis (6), Hamburger Buns (3), Scones (2), Wholemeal hot dog buns (2).... for $26 Those are the approx numbers, came out with 2 bulging bags... but the Paninis are a pack of 6 for $2.25 (prev $4.50) so an extremely cheap panini. Tommorrow nights tea is smoked chicken, cheese, Onion and spicy plum sauce paninis with soup..... Yummo!
