| Happy holidays I have just been given a huge amount of stamps to sell for charity. Mostly Asian. I am wanting to maximise the return. Should I separate them in to the specific Asain countries or sell as a mix? What do collectors want? Some are on piece and some off. Thanks. what007 - 2008-12-30 13:31:00 |

| Donaldo this is the best I could do http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/38/83496538_full.jpg This is not the actual stamp but the envelope they were in the stamps make up the picture, hope this helps thanks ajay73 - 2008-12-30 14:30:00 |
| Cheers Donaldo I will keep sorting and trimming. Thanks. what007 - 2008-12-30 15:59:00 |
| re 1001 What you have is a postal stationery envelope and not a stamp at all. I sell This envelope in my shop for $2 each and I could supply perhaps 20 of them at present. What is valuable is the original painting as shown on the envelope. # similar ones were painted and one recently sold in Australia for something like a quarter of a million dollars. kiwisteven - 2008-12-30 19:25:00 |
| Donaldo..thanks... for the reply, will pay $10 for green postmark. can you please list one william1091 - 2008-12-30 21:22:00 |

| "A to Z of New Zealand" I saw these for the first time yesterday ... I was quite impressed so I bought two sheets. I wonder whether they will get much everyday use? ... are they sold over the counter, or only to collectors in sheets of 26 stamps ... and therefore really only a novelty item for collectors. If so, then NZ Post is doing what Fujeira, Um Al Quiwain and numerous other cunning countries starting doing 30 years ago: printing stamps primarily for collectors to buy (and never use for postage). musikal - 2008-12-30 22:39:00 |
| ajay73 ??....if the stamps are in the envelope why not scan them? surely you are not talking about the posted item. as you say an ammount of "stamps" that makes up what is on the cover? william1091 - 2008-12-30 23:03:00 |
| I would scan them william but the actual stamps are at my mothers in Auckland in a safe place lol, there is a series of stamps that when put together make up this picture they were in this envelope they fit together like a jig-saw ajay73 - 2008-12-31 07:13:00 |

| "A to Z of New Zealand" I think the way to avoid the "Ajman Syndrome" would be to limit the number of stamps issued each year to 5 or 6 issues (and no more than 6 stamps in per issue) ... this is how it was in the 1970s, and no-one complained then. It would make each issue so much more significant, and hopefully they would be better designed! (like the 1970s stamps of UK, France and Germany). One of the worst recent NZ issues looks like the 2003 Cars - an inferior copy of the 1972 Vintage Cars set. And also in 2003 came the facsimile set of the 1953 Coronation - so pointless! And don't get me started on the endless "Emerging Years" 1920s, 1930s, 1940s rubbish sets which were issued in the 1990s! musikal - 2009-01-01 13:09:00 |

| Re Totara Homestead postmark Totara Estate is about 6km south of Oamaru and is where the first shipment of frozen meat to Britain originated - so that would tie in with this appearing on FDC's for the 1957 meat export set. So I'm guessing this was specially produced for this issue. rgbh25703 - 2009-01-02 18:15:00 |
| Left stamps I have been left two books of stamps, they are very old, the old chap was in his 90's, alot of NZ stamps, the islands and os, where would I get them valued, who would I take them to? gabbysnana - 2009-01-02 19:29:00 |

| hi all my mum has a large collection of stamps and first day covers from all over the world, they were my late brothers. where is the best place for her to get an honest appraisal? hungif - 2009-01-06 13:08:00 |

| donalo she is in kapiti, she has been told about John Mowbray in Otaki, but dont knoe if he is the 'one' to go see hungif - 2009-01-06 20:26:00 |
| Taking stamps to a dealer to get them valued is like taking your car to a 2nd-hand car dealer to get it valued. For a valuation, get in touch with an impartial stamp expert (in the nearest Philatelic Society). musikal - 2009-01-07 02:17:00 |
| musikal many thanks for that, i will pass it on hungif - 2009-01-07 09:32:00 |
| Hi hungif I do not agree with musikal's advice. A collector from a stamp club would not have the expertise of a stamp dealer and would want to buy selected better items from the collection. If you bring it into my shop in Wellington I would have a look at it for no charge. collectorman - 2009-01-07 10:06:00 |
| Hungif I was going to add ... there is one stamp dealer with great integrity who I WOULD recommend seeking an appraisal from ... John Eccles in Wellington (see message above). musikal - 2009-01-07 14:22:00 |
| Hi... Thanks for your kind words Alistair. collectorman - 2009-01-07 15:12:00 |
| How do you tell if stamps are legit. I just bought some off trademe, got them today but i'm not 100% sure they are legit stamps, they also have a round black ink stamp on them from the repbulique of congo. Want to know how to tell if these are legit. scarletangel101 - 2009-01-07 17:07:00 |
| Republique of congo Does the handstamp include a date? If not, then it's not really a postmark. Either way, the stamps are "cancelled to order" - meaning they weren't actually used on a letter. This isn't a problem ... many "attractive" stamps are intended for collectors, and may or may not ever be used on letters. musikal - 2009-01-07 18:06:00 |

| They relate to the stash of printings that were left in a leaky Warehouse in north Yarra, over a period of time most of the stamps were affected with humidity , most noticable on the 1d Reds and Greens of the 1918 Cooke print runs, the stamps have porous marks all over, but they were released back into circlation in the 20s due to, paper shortages. harrihorse - 2009-01-08 23:29:00 |

| from memory there are 23 listed shades of the 1d Red, the Salmon eison being the most elusive, and it's one I don't have, a lot of the printing were made using improvised locally procured inks, as supplies were torpedoed by the german raiders, although Perry has redefined the shade listings, I still have the Original 1966 handbook. harrihorse - 2009-01-08 23:44:00 |

| I did read somewhere that the 1 and one half penny red was the most specialized stamp issue in the world, there are many many flaws with this stamp, I am awaiting the latest cat from Hawthorn press in Melb, I am never bored with looking at these issues, always something new to discover, I hope you will enjoy your hoard as there are fewer of these once common stamps comming onto the market. harrihorse - 2009-01-09 00:04:00 |
