Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

At least the dodgy trader davisnof is now listing his fake gold and silver as plated.

The person who paid $4830 for one of his last gold and silver sales last month hasn't left any feedback yet. Hopefully they got them checked out and found to be fake and got their money back.

That's perhaps why davisnof is now listing them as plated coins and bullion.

Bad trader sells fake items, then won't refund money. Be very cautious of this trader.

Well not many people supported the auctions at coin.co.nz as an alternative.
However one can use Mobray's auctions as they only clip the NZ buyer. (Bad joke as it's a 19.55% fee).

And on Radio NZ this morning Reserve Bank Assistant Governor Christian Hawkesby on "Reserve Bank ponders digital currency and new rules for new money". A bit infantile. Unaware that they were Saviours of the NZ economy. If most money wasn't digital we would need the Weimar Republic's wheelbarrows,

I used to use coin.co.nz as a buyer and seller, but it was a Catch-22: very small market so not many bidders, and not a huge range to pick from. But I did enjoy what trades I did have there. I note the website is still there but it appears to be functioning as a shop now.

Isn't this the same lot he had listed recently? Wonder if he pulled and relisted after negative comments first time round. But yes, as phony as the day is long, although I note he doesn't explicitly say they're genuine. Just hope bidders do their research, and more fool them if they don't.

Pretty sure it was the same seller who was offering a "Shanghai Special" Aussie 1923 halfpenny a while back but at least pulled it after it drew a lot of attention via one of the Facebook groups.

Hi all, bit of an announcement for you today.

We're stoked to be announcing our cool new member forum – Community.

This can be found on our Help centre, and is a place where members can give tips and advice, ask questions, and help each other with all things Trade Me. It’s all pretty intuitive, and we think you’re going to find it really useful.

As we now have one great place for our members to look for help, we’ve also made the decision to retire our message board. This will come into effect on 15 November.

The message board was originally introduced as a way for members to help each other use the site, but over the years its purpose has moved away from that. We know this is a big change for all of you who love the message board, however Community is a place that’s only for Trade Me related conversations and we reckon it’s a better fit.

Our Trade Me community is an awesome one, and we want you to keep chatting with each other about Trade Me related things, but for all the other stuff, this is best done in other chat rooms.

Thanks for all of the love and... let’s say ‘feedback’ you’ve provided via the message board over the years. We do appreciate it, and we can’t wait to see you on Community!

Disappointing. Over 10,000 msgs in this incarnation of the COIN CLUB thread will presumably be gone at that point. Not sure what non-Facebook options we have to continue the discussion, though for those on FB, the "Coin Collectors NZ" page ( https://www.facebook.com/groups/1172780562774982 ) might be worth considering.

Hi everyone. Regarding 1997 $2 coins, can anyone tell me if the UNC returned coins were minted on the same line as the $2 coins in the 1997 UNC sets? I have amassed a few of these circulated but would like a nice aUNC/EF pulled from circulation. Many thanks

As far as I'm able to tell, no - the circulating coins were made in South Africa but the "set" $2s that year were struck in the UK. I'll have a look to see if have any decent SA strikes I can list for you.

I've listed one this morning that's nice and sharp with just a few bag marks and a bit of toning after 20+ years in storage.

I don't think there was a formal withdrawal but it was slow-timed: as coins went back to the banks they tried not to release them again. It was something about the electronic signature that meant they wouldn't work properly in slot machines, etc., though from memory, I believe the SA Mint insisted its 1997 coins were perfectly on-spec, but that the 1990-91 coins originally made in the UK were off, meaning that all our machines had been calibrated incorrectly! Would love to be able to find the original correspondence to be sure I had the exact details of the assertion.

Would have been then, yep :-) I still have a saved archive of one of the earlier versions that ended in 2007, during the great "2004 5c boom", and there were a couple more short-lived incarnations in between.

Hi. I was hoping someone can help me identify this, which I bought very cheaply recently just for the novelty of it - I don't think its of any real value but I can't find any information on it at all via Dr. Google. I'm just curious as to who 'minted' it and why. It might sit in my collection until I win Lotto and can afford to buy a real Waitangi Crown ha ha. Strictly speaking I guess its a medallion not a coin as there is no $ value on it, but it is in the style and size of a 1935 Waitangi Crown but dated 1952-2012 (presumably 50 years since the accession of QEII to the throne). Can anyone offer any insights or suggestions? Links to my photos of it below, hopefully they work. Cheers.

This is interesting - I thought at first it was going to be one of the "London Mint" (a privte entity, not the Royal Mint) products that caused some controversy when they first came out (and were banned from TM for a time at the Reserve Bank's request), but those had the same reverse legends as the original, which was potentially more problematic. The different arrangement of the words on this one makes it more of a commemorative medal as you say. I'd like to find out more - and I'd like to use the images in the next update to the 2010s chapter of the NZ Commemorative Medals catalogue if I may!
It may still be London Mint but if it doesn't show on their website it may be a case of asking them to find out if it's one of theirs. The fact it has the Queen's typically English-style titles on the obverse suggests it might be.

OK, googling "Waitangi" "2012" "coin" was enough - here's an example in packaging, which credits the design to Donald R. Golder.

He's worth googling, as he was a prolific designer of "Retro coins" 10-15 years ago. Best known for the "Patina collection" of fantasy stuff largely based on older designs.

If I have it right there's just a couple of days left before this archive of over nine years of coin-related exchanges disappears into the ether. I just trawled the first 50 pages looking for something and it brought back some memories.
So where to from here? Do we want to move en masse to somewhere like the Coin Collectors NZ group on Facebook? (Though I realise there are a few regulars here who don't "do" Facebook.) Or should we look at setting up a forum at https://tmmb.co.nz/forums/forumdisplay.php?fid=40 as a poster suggested above? I don't want to be the one to do it or have to manage it as I have more than enough demands on my time, but if someone gives it a go I'll be happy to join in.

We can but try. I've asked, but it's possible we may just lose it, unless someone's prepared to do manual saves of 200+ pages and string them all together!

Right now I'm keen to find a workable option for the future, as once this group is gone it won't be that easy to get the word out about where to "meet" next.

While I think of it - a really useful forum for identifying obscure items, as well as just general chat on anything of numismatic interest, is www.worldofcoins.eu. I'm not a member (by choice) but recommend it to anyone with mystery items they want to pin down.

A few options:

1) Use ClipCache* (www.xrayz.co.uk) - you will be amazed how quickly you can capture screeds of posts, which can then be merged into one searchable file including links, and exported if required.
Text searches within ClipCache are lightning fast.
I'd estimate you could do the lot in less than an hour.
You'd need to have a method of keeping your place - but ClipCache can even be set to 'not duplicate' text captures.

2) Or, you could copy and paste into Thunderbird and save as an (HTML) file. Not sure of file size limitation but it preserves all links.

3) If anyone has a spare Wordpress site, you could copy and paste into the visual editor; again, not sure of size limitation.
You could even grab a free Wordpress.com site to do this.

*One of computing's best kept secrets - about the only stellar software product I've seen come out of England !

p.s. It's all your hard yakka that has compiled the forum over years, but you might need to check out TM copyright stuff if you're going to share content.
