Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

I checked on a coin listed on TM at the moment. A Greece 2 Drachmai KM# 61 1911(a). NGC VF 30 XF 150; Numista F 45.87 VF 25.04 XF 46.55
A wide range of values with a Numista fine being nearly twice their very fine value(?); and the NGC XF being over three times the value of the Numista XF.
No wonder Humpty Dumpty said it's a topsy turvy world!

alpha111 - 2021-02-28 13:22:00

However NGC is in USD and Numista is in NZD so the NGC XF is probably only twice the Numista XF (currency correction). But a 3.15 pm today the true NZ value will be revealed when the auction closes.

This gVF specimen finally sold for $45.50.

I have a question about the Mowbray Auction Mobile bidding facility for those who have used it

I want to place my bids before the actual lots come up, but after the auction as a whole has started. This is because I don't think I am up to live bidding but want to leave it to the last moment before I make my bids. So for example if I want to bid on lot 100 I would wait until the bidding on lot 98 or 99 begins and then put my bid on for lot 100!

Is this possible, the description on the Mowbray website seemed unclear to me as to when you are allowed to put in your absentee bids?

thank you in advance for any answers to my question!

Live online bidding is available via our website through Auction Mobility. A 3% surcharge applies to all successful bids placed through Auction Mobility.
Telephone bidding may be made during the course of the auction; by prior arrangement only.

LIVE ONLINE BIDDING VIA AUCTION MOBILITY is available for this auction (a 3% charge applies for all successful bids placed through the live bidding facility). Click to access the live bidding facility.

I will have to contact them tomorrow as I have put in a few bids , filled out the required forms but have not received an auto confirmation that the bids have been received or that they will be placed

gammoner - 2021-03-11 22:59:00

this is the bit I don't quite understand

"Absentee bids can be placed via Auction Mobility up until approximately 30 minutes prior to the auction which commences at 1pm NZ time (GMT + 12 hours). After which time only live bidding is available on lots as the auction proceeds."

Basically I want to bid on a number of lots, but do not want to do it beforehand in case I win them all as I might not have enough money!
What instead I want to be able to do is know the result of lot !00 say, before I place my bid on lot 200!

This will be your only option I believe or have someone in the room you can trust enough to bid on your behalf
Live online bidding is available via our website through Auction Mobility. A 3% surcharge applies to all successful bids placed through Auction Mobility.
Telephone bidding may be made during the course of the auction; by prior arrangement only.
PS, I did receive a confirmation of my acceptance and bid list by email at 9.43am this morning

Yeah, that's my auction. I can't help feeling I'm being set up. I have reported the bid to Trade Me. See what they say.

Just because we are from the same city doesn't mean anything. I don't know the trader. I googled them and they exist. I have reported the bid to Trade Me. See what they say.

As the seller you can remove the high bid - I'd be surprised if TM upheld any complaint from the bidder, given it looks like an "obvious error" or worse.

Where can one purchase the larger size protective bank note sleeves for the NZ 50 pound notes. What brand and material are the best for long term storage ? Thanks

Sorry - I hadn't checked the link and thought maybe the original source quoted just one. I heard an Edward VIII coin sale made the news earlier today but not the pattern crown - local news could do better with its priorities!

As photographed, that toning is downright ugly. But then others may have different preferences. Can't help wondering what kind of atmosphere it's been kept in.

Indeed, MS 64 is not actually a particularly high grade either!
(might even be signs of wear on King George's eyebrow and cheek!)

it's also a very expensive coin to be kept in a cheap NGC plastic holder!

would be interesting to see what it looks like in hand, maybe when it arrives here from heritage Alan might let us come over to his place to look at it, and maybe if we are lucky we can even touch it!

Hi Colin.
Philatelic Distributors have Lighthouse Grande Classic Binders. One can get sheets of different sizes to fit the binder. Supposedly Document quality: 100% free from chemical softeners and acids. The binders fit well in a bookcase.

Buyer beware, I guess, like the half-crown polished to a nice lustre above. It's a shame if people are burned and then put off collecting, but they should do their reading ("buy the book before the coin" - or, these days, at least check reliable websites or talk to more experienced collectors) to avoid getting caught by those who "know but don't care" (picking my words carefully here).

Odd jump in the bidding from 151 to 752 in one move near the end.

ah yes, I suspect a typo from the second placed bidder, which the winner apparently did not notice when they bid. If that is what happened then we might see it back up for auction, unless the winner is a very proud man who insists on paying for it as a matter of honour and principle!

I've come across an odd coin that I'd like a second opinion on - it appears to be a French coin from 1656. Diameter is 32mm, weight is about 10.8g. My first impression was it was made from copper, but not sure:

It's about the right size for a silver 1/2 ecu (1656I - Limoges Mint, KM164.10). Catalogue gives the weight as 13.54g, though wear/damage may account for some weight loss. If it's been buried some of the metal may have leached out too, making it lighter. I'm not aware of any copper coins that large at the time, but I'll check a different book after dinner, as KM is a bit of a mess to follow, unfortunately!

Monnaies Royales (Ciani) shows the same design on the silver half-écu as #1850. Nothing in copper or billon of that size and design that I can see.

I put a large bid on the Roman Republic L Roscius Fatatus C.64 BC Denarius Listing #3051569299 and was hit by a tidal wave of 3 times my bid and it went for $525.
Nearly as bad as those fantasy crowns mentioned above! Guess some of us are out of touch with modern values. As a consolation I bid on the 1701 demi-ecu seeing it was also topical above; and affordable.

The KM "Unusual World Coins" book is a bit hit-and-miss but it prices NZ fantasy crowns at between US$20 and US$175 depending on the series (gold ones dearer, of course). On average I'd have thought about NZ$30-$50 each wouldn't be too unreasonable - but I didn't look too closely at the lot in question, so there may have been some earlier strikes or silver ones in there. Perhaps the buyer spotted something I didn't at first glance :-)

I obtained the Geoffrey Hearn NZ 1954 silver proof-like re-strike from Mowbrays earlier this year for $26.70 including shipping (like the NZ one in the lot of 5).
The Pobjoy Mint NZ 1972 30.46g 0.999 silver proof cost $33.00 2 1/2 years ago (from ACW-NZ?). Maybe the other four in that lot are worth more ?
Some Edward VIII fantasy crowns are copper and copper-nickel so you don't want to pay much for these.
