for sure the safety pin takes the static out of petti coat and stops it from sticking to the skirt, the clear nail varnish sets the ladder or hole so it wont grow any more

Sent a photo into "thats Life" Magazine and won a $50 cheque.... Fantastic... Now I can treat myself to that long overdue haircut. Rang my salon and my stylist has gone from an Intermediate $55 to a senior $65... Grr so spent 10 mins on the phone and I am going to trial another salon who is willing to just give me a cut (no blow wave) for $40... so 10 mins on the phone (and a leap of faith - fingers crossed she is good) has saved me $25..... My hairstyle is not rocket science, I am growing out the layers so I can tie it back while I am away on holiday.... So will let you know how I get on... (NOTE... have you worked out I have $10 left of my prize....mmmmm I am going to buy something for ME with it!!!) *runs off looking for other photos to send in...*

Why is it a problem that someone is making money out of something on trade me. How many people on here buy something on here and then sell it on for more.

Good idea though, hmm maybe I will write a book!!!! LOL

i know i said i wouldnt contribute but i couldnt halp myself....this is a classic, I think im tight bidgetted BUT on the weekend i had my son home NOW i always keep all my plastic bags for the 2nd hand shop in town so i had a rubbish bag full & was going to take them in on Tues....ny som goes to me as he was leaving MUM do you still save your grocery bags I replied yes, he goes can you believe it Pak n SAve charge us 5 cents a bag in Plamy thats 50 cents each week can you imagine that thats $24 a year just on plastic bags...then he proceeded to load all the old bags ointo his car and he said he just refused to pay for bags, and he is listing stuff on trade me and wanted the rest for packaging, so what have i created, LOL i happily pay 5cents a bag at paknsave it saves looking for a box that wont fall to pieces, I had to share that with you all

I use the plastic bags to pick up after my dog and my sister delivers all of her bags to me for this purpose cos she doesn't have recycling in her area. That way I can do my part by using minimal plastic bags and save being charged.

Don't Waste anything I never let anything go off or throw anything away. If the pumpkin looks like it needs eating in the next day or 2 and you don't look like you are going to eat it, spend a couple of minutes chopping it up into soup cubes. I found that if I ever brought celery it would go limp before we finished it... so on the first day I make a couple of soup bags from the leaves and outside stalks... then after a few days when its starts going soft I make another couple of bags from the heart of the celery... No wastage.. I use the pams freezer bags just over $1 for 30... The best thing is when you go to make your soup you just throw in bags of pre chopped stuff. I had some tomatoes going soft... so I chopped them up.. put them in a bag in approx 1 cans worth and used them in my Peanut Chicken Rice dish our family loves and it was much nicer than with canned tomatoes...

further note for you on celery toadfish in cafes I learned to wash and cut celery into lengths that would fit an icecream tub. Stored in the air tight container, the celery retains it's crispness for up to a month. Astonishing but true.

Got 3 packs of good mince reduced to $3 per pack from over $5.... 3 packs of 9 drumsticks for approx $4.65 each (on special) and 1 pack of diced trim pork for $5 (reduced from $8). So thats 7 meals for our family of 4 for $28 (2 adults and 2 adult portion eating teenagers) so that averages $4 per meal.... not bad eh??

Afternoon All... Well I have been unwell for nearly a week now with a dreadul ear infection... not the normal run of the mill one.. oh nooooo I have to have a special one that doesn't respond to "regular" antibiotics... Anyhoo on the track to mending but still feeling fragile... Couldn't get motivated for tonights tea so when I popped into foodtown to get the milk I picked up a pack of 900gms of mince for $9 and turned it into a family lasagne for tonight... plus a family lasagne and 2 individual ones for the freezer. I am taking Darlingmoles name "Queen of Mean" Usually I make just 2 family ones and divi the stuff amongst it but always felt I had too much pasta... (i use 2 x packs of budget lasagne pasta) Anyhoo This way the family ones have slightly less mince (family won't notice lol) and I have 2 x "emergency dinners" for teenage girls who need feeding in a hurry. http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/61/96980361_full.jpg

Post fro Liamjosh... thought it fitted great here Tip to save money in this economic time
..My mum taught me this years ago and I try to follow it and it often saves me a whole weeks/fortnights grocery money. If you get your groceries on a set day each week or fortnight (say Wednesday) try and make your groceries stretch one extra day. That way the following week it will be Thursday, then Friday, then Saturday etc.. Then before you know it, you have not spent this weeks/fortnights grocery money and you can use that for something else. Works better if you meal plan.

I do the same as the above but try and push it to 2-3 days later. I couple this with having a spare of everything so it goes on the list when I open the spare not when I run out.

I'm posting to thank everyone who's contributed to this thread - the askers because they often asked questions I didn't know I needed to know, yes I do have Irish ancestry ;-), as well as those wonderful people who have spent time and ingenuity answering questions. Today I did a one morning budgetting course which has given me some ideas of where I need to start. It's quite sobering when you trace where your money goes. I have got weekly amounts for all my regular bills (rates, electricity, phone, insurance, transport) that's the easy bit, but it's the unknowns that get me - how much to put aside for dental bills for example?Any suggestions?

that's where I have a savings account that I try to maintain at 500. It's a big head start if the car breaks down, or I need a tooth pulled. Most people are willing to work with you paying off costs if you've got a decent deposit. That's my "just in-case" money that doesnt get touched for something that's not an emergency.

ange164 - 2009-06-24 18:46:00
984

Hey Ange164 That's an idea. When I set up my bill paying account I am going to start with some 'seed money' and have that as a basis for the emergency fund. Let's hope an emergency doesn't happen for a few months. It would also give me money to call on if my Dad gets sick and I have to race up north.$500 sounds like a useful amount.

Its been some time since I was last on MB, but its fantastic to see this tread still going strong. I've done 2 major things this winter to help the $$$ go further. Firstly I have changed my family grocery shopping from once a forgthnight to 3 weekly. Still spend the same amount, just live by if its gone out of the cubbord tough!! you have to wait till its 3 week gocery shop. I am doing alot more hame baking these days. Secondly I live in a small town, and asked around if anyone wanted my food

Continued from above........ scraps. A farmer now takes them in exchange for half a lovely side of pork, costs me 1/2 the price of the pig and processing at the butcher. Works really well and their is nothing like paddock farmed free range pork. Whats more I know every 4 months their will be more. I know this might not work in the cities, but ask around you never know.

When I say still spend the same on my 3 week grocery shop, its the same amount as i would spend on a forgthnight, so I am making same $$ go a week longer and its a huge saving to our pockets. Clear as mud!!

Just to let you know Foodtown have 5kgs of Jasmine rice for $12 soemthing... making it just over $2.40 per kilo. The same brand in the 1kg packet was $3.40... so for the first time I brought a bulk bag of rice... I will see how it goes... and how long it lasts. They also had 1kgs of weetbix for $4.99 and beautiful freshzone carrots for $1.99 for a kilo, don't know how they store these carrots but they are so sweet and juicy my kids love them. They must hate me as I go in and only buy the super specials... home brand milk and signature bread. The rest I get at pak and save.

My latest way of making sure there is no waste is I plan to have a soup meal, the day after a crockpot meal. Don't know about you but when I use the crockpot I end up with far more gravy than I need (yummy but too much). Last week I made a beef casserole in the cp, it had a can of tomatoes in it. So seeing that it was tomatoe based I made up a kings minestrone, added cubed pumpkin, carrots & celery and the added all the left over "Slop" from the crockpot... the result was a delicous and rich soup and no waste. Today I have Lamb, carrots, onions & Barley in the cp so tommorrow it will be a vegetable soup with the left overs as a base... and a loaf of homemade fresh bread... Yum yum yum.

Came out of New World today and past Bakers Delight and fancied a date scone... but just couldn't pay the $2.20 price as they didn't even look that nice... smaller than usual. So I went back into New World to get some dates and flour and found alot of their baking stuff was on special this week. For $10.30 I got... 400gms dates ($1.69)....400gms Tasti Fruit Mix ($2.49).... 400gms Sultanas ($1.99).... 1.5kgs flour ($1.89). Imagine how many scones... fruit cakes... loafs... etc... I can make for less than the cost of 5 x Bakers Delight Scones.....
