Maybe it's a local account and that won't help. It's only speculation anyway untill or unless they come back and contribute to the discussion.

They said the computer gave them the option to "click here to reset pin" and that "I did that and nothing happened"

Maybe they could do an online reset IF they had an MS account - which they haven't stated. The did say they never had a password. I gave them my best advice which they have yet to come back and confirm as to whether they even had any luck trying.

a password is required before they can setup a pin. Safe mode would probably allow them to enter it if they knew what it was. It does sound like a MS account problem as against local account but who really knows...

Yeah well they said they'd never had a password. As for safe mode, well I did pointy them to advanced startup. I be don't think they managed it tho.

Hello Yes nice_lady I did try what you said and it did NOT go to advanced set up. I did do exactly what you said as well. I may not know much about computers but I am not stupid. I do know how to read and follow instructions. It just keeps going back to the same thing. Why can none of you understand that. No I do not have a password on it and yes it does have a ms account.

No they havent given up but have tried everything that all of you have suggested BUT NOTHING WORKS. Why does everyone seem to think it is me that is the problem. I have also removed the battery and replaced and then tried all again to no avail. I am taking it to a tech tomorrow. I tried again this morning but still no go. Thank you all for your suggestions. I will let you know what the tech says. later.

So previously you never had a password to log in?

tygertung - 2021-08-04 23:15:00

That is right and the computer is giving me NO option for a password.

This will be what the OP’s problem is, a screen photos from someone with the same problem., in fact 26 pages covering the same or similar problems!

This is a thread about it, some solutions that would be worth working through. A very frustrating and difficult problem for anyone who isn’t pretty knowledgeable I would think. I hope the tech can sort it out for you OP.

I note that the OP in that thread got instructions on getting into advanced startup mode and that it worked for them. Blackhonker my guess is that you're waiting just a tiny bit too long to interrupt the startup of the computer. As instructed if you do this right it will go to that repair mode.

But, yeah, I wait with bated breath to find out what is done by your tech.

Ps: myself and others here have many years of tech work experience.

There is always a password for the MS account but in your case you would need to access safemode in the advanced startup menu to use it, and you would need to know what it is - there is usually a button on the screen that allows toggle between pin/password, missing for you ...

You could try logging into the MS account online, at outlook.com for example. It might be that the account itself has been locked/blocked by MS for some reason, although it does usually tell you that you need to login online in that case...

the post about fast startup being a factor (page 3 or 4 ) seems interesting and potentially relevant as well since the windows kernel persists - disabling that from safe mode might be an option as well.

Yes I have a power button bottom right as I said on a previous post Tried that too. nice_lady I have tried your system and will try again. When I first did it I held the butto down till it turned off. immedeately turned back on and counted 5 sec and when I turned off it just turned straight off I did not have to hold down for long. I do not know if this makes any difference. It goes off straigt away second and third times.

Thanks guys for all your help. I have been to a tech he had a quick look but I cannot afford to leave there just at the moment will have to save up. If the possibility happens and I need to reload windows That is too dear at the mo and will have to save for that. Not sure where to go from here.

try this way. use the *restart* option from that power button on the bottom right of the screen, but hold down the *shift* button as you click restart. For clarity this is a soft button within windows, not the physical button on the edge of the monitor...

This is the second way listed from the link nice_lady posted

no, no
you press start
count to 5
hold power button to stop the startup
wait a few seconds while the machine is off
then repeat
do the start/stop process 3 times

heres the same instructions written by someone else they're very similar and the person who followed them said it worked:

Turn off your PC

Start your PC, just as Windows attempts to load (spinning dots), press and hold Power Button on the casing of your PC for 5 - 10 seconds to perform a Hard Shut Down

Do this twice

On the third start Windows will boot into the Recovery Environment and from there you can access System Repair, Safe Mode, Command Prompt . . . etc.

Please try each option one at a time, then see of Windows will boot . . .

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Repair
See if Windows startup can repair itself

Go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - System Restore
Check to see if you have a restore point you can go back to

If you do not have a Restore Point, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Option - Startup Settings and click Restart
Upon restart, press 4 to enter Safe Mode
Once in Safe Mode, backup your data if you do not already have a backup
Open Device Manager and check to make sure all your Drivers are up to date
Reboot to see if Windows will start Normally

If the above fails, go to Troubleshoot - Advanced Options - Reset this PC
Choose to keep your files and apps, just your files or to keep nothing
Then start the Reset

IF you have a shutdown option on the screen there is no need for the somewhat brutal method of forced shutdowns - it can have undesirable consequences

king1 - 2021-08-05 13:05:00
73

As king1 is saying IF you have that 'shutdown' button on the screen (lower right hand side I think), then you can hold the shift key while you clik on it. That' will restart the computer into the advanced options screen you need to get to. If you don't have that button then it's back to the method I've detailed. Can you post a picture of the screen ?

nice_lady - 2021-08-05 13:29:00

I did the shutdown using the power key on screen and shift key. It did go to a repair screen which had several options I chose the reset this PC option. It went to a screen which said chose account. It only had mine so I chose it. It came up with a screen where I had to put in my password. I am never sure which password they mean. I use my email address as a user name so I put that password. I said wrong password try again. What password do I use.

I am logging off for a while now. Take care and have a great day guys. And thanks heaps everyone.

firstly, you probably shouldn't need to reset the PC, not at this stage at least.

try it again, this time instead of reset, go to advanced options -> startup settings, choose 4 for safe mode (not networking)

as for the password, do you know what it is? if not or not sure, try logging in to the account directly here, this should work or at least give you an error message we can use...
https://account.microsoft.com/
Make sure it is the Microsoft account you use on your PC, it may well be based on a personal email address eg xtra, but it is a Microsoft account with it's own password - not your (for example, xtra ) email password...

you will need to do this on another device for obvious reasons

Well thanks but I think that often it's also good to have more than one eye on the ball.

Have you considered installing a plain (non HP) vanilla W10 from a USB stick. Don't connect to the internet and you will be given the option to log in to MS if you R.E.A.L.L.Y want to. That way you don't need a PIN or password.
After loading the laptop will find a whole lot of updates so let it do its thing.
You will end up without HP bloatware as a bonus.

Had this at the shop a few weeks ago, It was a User Profile error as HD had a few bad sectors. Cloned to new drive and chkdsk /r and working fine. But then, computers are a funny toy

if you didnt have a password, then don't use a password. leave it blank and press enter

hazelthecat I do not understand a single thing except ubs stick. how do I get a plain vanilla W10 on a ubs stick. I have a ubs stick but what is the vanilla W10. Thanks I am very much a novice here.

blackhonker - 2021-08-06 15:39:00

Blackhonker It might be easier if you get a knowledgeable friend to download a bootable version of W10 from the Microsoft site to your USB stick. This allows you to load a brand new version of windows on to your computer. If you are not connected to the internet when booting from the USB stick you are given the option to add a Microsoft account. Don't - you can do this later if you want to. This will cost you an 8Gb USB stick - less than $10.
