My rates seem to have gone down by $100 this year.
Its still nearly 3x what i paid in 1998, i wish i got paid 3x what i was getting paid in 1998.

lucky you and yeah the average inflation rate since 1999 is 1.95%. So the rates increases don’t correlate at all.

Why would you expect them to?
The biggest reason for rate increases is higher spending. Blame the previous councils you praise for not putting money away to pay for new infrastructure as the old needs replacing or higher demand needs to be met.

you don’t think it’s possible the previous councils did live within their means and this mass spending has only become a thing in the last 20 years? Much like the rampant consumerism that has afflicted people?

I am left questioning how these people run their own finances.

Difference between previous councils living within their means and previous councils putting funding away to keep it's infrastructure up to date and fit for use.

I guess they mistakenly thought the people who came after them would be responsible

um no, we didn’t need a mud festival, we didn’t need a lakefront development we didn’t need a sculpture for the roundabout, we didn’t need to get involved in running the local markets, we don’t need fancy gardens or 7 deputies.

Theres a big difference between actual needs and wants.

Oh and no one asked for the council to change its name from rotorua district council to Rotorua lakes council.

Plus CPI is a basket of milk, bread, petrol. Councils don't spend too much on that apart from the tea and bikkies at the council meeting but in reality they are spending on concrete, asphalt, pipes etc

Exactly right - its because previous councils have underspent on essential works that we're all in pickle now with massive borrowing combined with rates rises to cover failing infrastructure. Rotorua has announced around $ 400m of additional spending over the next ten years.

Filling in the same pothole twice a week for 10 years isn’t wise spending, it’s better to do it right the first time - a bit like the nice piece of ashphalt that was laid outside one of the councillors houses 10 years ago…..hasnt needed patching up since. I bet it’s lovely and quiet too.

Every Council ever has had it's monuments to itself. Rotorua makes its money from tourism, council needs to provide the pretties for the tourists

I think you mean ‘made’ and there are ways of paying for things which don’t involve fleecing the ratepayers, but that would require someone to actually do some work or have some common sense.

Thats not a councils job. Thats for the tourism industry to achieve. The "rotorua International airport", the rotorua museum, the CBD cycle paths, the howard morrison theatre, are all a huge waste of money. So is 6 people mowing a roundabout, and not bringing petrol. so is a Chief executive who is paid more than all 12 councillors put together.

I hope someone new and refreshing with no agenda steps up. That could be wishful thinking.

Ours wastes money just to make jobs just to use that as a example that its doing something. As soon as they find they have money to spend, they spend money to figure out a way to spend it, then complain that costs have gone up.

Often 1/2 of whats being done now, is removing something that wasn't necessary, or functional, in the first place, so they can store it, fix where it was, then put it somewhere else where it wont do anything anyway.

( A large stainless steel umbrella made out of tubing & mesh (?!) Designed as a star map, offers no protection from the rain or wind, placed on a central city street so it blocks traffic & uses up potential car parking spaces, in such a way that tall buildings block its star mapping abilitys of the sky....

Might as well build a tall tower to hold up a red flashing light, so as to stop airplanes from crashing into the tall tower

In reality, its like shifting deck chairs on the Titanic while its sinking.

They are all the same. none are any better than the other. Each building monuments to themselves, doing the pretties and forgetting about the essentials until it is critical. Unfortunately for all of us every council is at that place now. 100 year old pipes, water treatments, sewage....just can't cope . But i don't see this 3 waters BS making any difference.

eta we have the great Hundertwasser building and new council buildings on the go
