which as far as I can recall is the only way I have seen anyone get infected with a ransomware - not sure there are any other vectors in use...

I've seen employees disable security software to open the attachment simply because they were instructed to do so... IT folks have been banging on for decades about not opening attachments in dodgy looking emails, but people still do...

Because in 1982, while we were coating our houses in lead-based paint and insulating it with asbestos, the internet (or arpanet, as it was back then) was a volatile, dangerous minefield with nefarious individuals and organisations lurking in all corners of the world looking to exploit whatever vulnerability a Z80 machine code writer might leave exposed.
