Don't mind that, I am a born kiwi & I agree, I don't like either, too sweet for me.

Trifle doesn't have to be sweet tho - well, not as sweet as some make it that I have had. And like someone else mentioned on here its great boxing day for breakfast lol................that and xmas pudding fried in butter.

I am very happy to say that I do neither Christmas nor New Year nor Birthdays ... so no problems here.

However i had a few very lovely trifles in my time here - bur never asked for the recipe. I guess that the people just used "normal" fruit and some alcohol and that was it :)

I do love the old traditional trifle but none of my family do, so I make a chocolate trifle with choc mousse, choc sponge, boysenberry jelly and berries. They all love including the littlest grandies so more worthwhile for me to make that. Sometimes I put Kahlua in as well, depends on the Occassion.

I thought the trifle for breakfast on Boxing Day was just a weirdness of my daughter's. Maybe she's normal after all.

As a non-fan of the traditional trifle that sounds more like the kind of trifle I would like ...thanks.

I don't have a recipe, just make it up as I go, but I do use an extra half packet of jelly in the mix, so it's nice and firm. I once tried choc instant pudding, when I was first experimenting, but found that it separates. A tub of the bought mousse that you buy and whip has proved the most successful. Top with whipped cream and grated choc and some more berries if you like.

Thanks for that ...I've never bought mousse in my life, but am more than willing to, if it makes life easier when catering for a crowd!

My family don't eat trifle, I can't even tempt them, so I don't make it. I used to love my mothers sherry trifle, it was the best

Love trifle, especially with lots of sherry! Custard fruit and cream, I never use jelly!!!

I love this trifle
1 pkt vanilla instant pudding
1 pkt banana instant pudding
Whip up using 500mls milk and 300mls cream, add 1 teasp vanilla essence. Cut up sponge and pour 1 can boysenberries over it to moisten, then pour the instant pudding mixture on top...
Enjoy

It's not exactly trifle and it's not exactly tiramisu, but I have a trifle/tiramisu-type recipe that I'd like to share with you.
Rhubarb Tiramisu
You can assemble the tiramisu ahead of time and chill until ready to serve.
Serves 6

6 stalks rhubarb, trimmed, washed and chopped

55g brown sugar

250g mascarpone

2 tbsp icing sugar

1 tbsp marsala wine

Finely grated zest & juice of 1 orange, plus…
½ cup (or more) orange juice
100ml single cream, whipped

12 savoiardi biscuits (ladyfingers) or a trifle sponge
Grated chocolate, to serve
1 Cook the rhubarb and brown sugar in a saucepan over a low heat, covered, for 15 minutes, until very soft. Transfer to a container and chill.
2 Mix the mascarpone, icing sugar, marsala and orange zest until smooth. Fold through the whipped cream.
3 Soak the savoiardi biscuits (or trifle sponge) in the orange juice. Cover the base of individual serving glasses or a large trifle bowl with the biscuits/sponge. Top with with alternate layers of the mascarpone mixture and the rhubarb, ending with the mascarpone on top. Sprinkle with grated chocolate before serving.
NB: I like to slosh a measure or two of marsala wine over the trifle sponges in the bottom of the bowl in addition to the orange juice.

I make a small one just for me as no-one else in my family like the texture of trifle. I use a gingerbread loaf, tinned pears and throw in some finely chopped crystalised ginger before piling on the custard and cream. Now I'm drooling at the thought of it.
