Its true aye 'you can never have too much fabric'

#Post

okay, I am now hooked on quilting and have started buying fabric. I'm just starting and after reading this thread, I think I am worried, lol.

Hi Haagen :) I am worried too, I was trying to be careful and just buy the fabric I had an immediate use for and have found unless you really know how much fabric you need you can have quite a bit left so that goes in the stash cupboard. And yesterday on here I bought 20 meters hmmm I did 'need' those colours but maybe not 20meters but then again its so handy to have. Oh my gosh now Im coming up with excuses for it all Im on the slippery slope for sure arghhhhh....

Oh my gosh -here I was having Holly on about " one of my machines" and I just realised I have 5 of them. An old singer treadle one that was my Grans, a "Grain" one that you turn the handle that was given to my SIL over 60 years ago. Two little black singers that are so cute they are about 9 inches high I have used them so much over the years. And the 5th one not really mine, I bought it off here for my daughter but because it does fancy stitches we share it.
Still waiting patiently for photos of your stashes.....please.....

you girls are amazing Thanks for starting my day of with so many laughs - I reckon the three of you should write a very serious book about how infectous this fabrc buyng is!!!!!
I am sitting in bed [home alone as hubby in hosp] and found this amazng site. I can sympathise with you, I used to make rag dolls when grandies were little and like you all had a spare room [which really wasnt spare at all when I had filled it]underbed, overbed on the bed you name it. The day came when house sold and I had to tidy and remove the contents. Oh my, it was a sad day.Closed my eyes and bagged most and took to Red Cross Op shop[didnt use Trade Me then] Now I hardly sew at all apart from curtains. Was a wonderful time of my life - I learnt on a tredle machine. Keep up the good work girls and just 'BE HAPPY" not guilty. Thanks for so many laughs I will keep following this site.
hahahahahahaha

Goodmorning Shanf :) Wow how horrible it would of been bagging your stuff up just cant imagine it :( You could start again rag dolls are always wanted by someone and much more interesting than curtains, it would give you a nice change between curtains and would let your creative mind take over hehe tis so much fun. Hope your hubby is soon back with you where he belongs. All the best Bronnie :)

Holly my apologies ok so 7 machines, are you sure have you been to the back of THE room lately may be one or two lurking back there lol Have great day, Im rag quilting still, lots birthdays this month even mine at least I didnt have to make myself one, hubby seemed little disapointed that he didnt get one( seems he wanted one with crayfish on) hmmmmm no such fabric that I can find - maybe next year. Keep smiling :)

Haagen Are you ok your other thread has gone very quiet. Keep the quilts going they are so satisfying :) Hows your daughters quilt coming along ? As you can see from Hollys message above we will never manage to get a room like hers no matter how hard we try, especially also when quilts take so much fabric. All the best Bronnie :)

coalrange1 - 2009-07-23 08:59:00
61

lmao no I'm NOT okay I have spent the last few days buying more fabric! Arrrrrggh! I've even started hiding the packages from Mr haagen, oh the shame! I am still working on my quilt projects...notice the "s"! I was halfway through my next quilt, and bought an advent calender project, which I feel I need to complete asap, even though xmas is 5 months away. I am behind in my work because I keep putting it off to do a weeee bit more sewing. OMG what has become of me? As for my daughter, she has moved on to glass painting, lol. *sigh*.

haagen4 - 2009-07-23 09:35:00
62

Yay so glad your still here Haagan hehe as for behind in your work, my hubby went to bed the other night before me ( I was sewing ) and he called out in a very cheeky voice " Thanks so much for turning the bed back for me " hmmm bed hadnt been made he had turned it back as he had climbed out that morning ooops lol

All kids working now and had started putting craft stuff in the cupboard but finally moved all the school keeping stuff into another cupboard and cleared out the rest and now I have a cupboard YAY Jules was supposed to come and help me out if I had got myself stuck in there but no she didnt come she just went on here and told tales hahaha hmmm she wrote it while she knew I was in there and wouldnt see it for awhile hmmmm lol Friends are great, Friends with the same interests are priceless :)Here's the cupboard, well half of it

coalrange1 hmmm spent time with my daughter, knew hubby or children would find you when it came to tea time!!!!!

Coalrange that looks incredibly orgnaised!

doug57 - 2009-07-27 19:55:00
68

Sorry Jules Had no intention of running you down.Jules is the lovely lady who helps me set out quilts and sends me links to quilt web sites and answers my texts straight away as I said before "a friend with the same interests is priceless "

coalrange1 - 2009-07-27 20:32:00
69

Doug Thankyou :) one day I hope to get an eye for colour like you have - all your quilts are magnificent and slowly we are seeing more on your auctions. Gosh have you ever counted how many you have made. You must be a marvel at time organisation to do what you do :)

coalrange1 - 2009-07-27 20:36:00
70

lolololol I don't keep count..but I do love to sew..so everyone in the family and any friends that I think would be appreciative have had more than one!! Quilts are much cosier to snuggle up with than a blanket!!

doug57 - 2009-07-27 21:28:00
71

and I don't know about time management! If I'm sewing or mosaicing..the crockpot goes on and I can turn a blind eye to housework..it'll still be there the next day..that way I can have most of the day having a sew-fest! Hubby and kids have grown used to stepping around quilt blocks laid on the carpet! [even the dog skirts around the edges..haven't managed to train the cats yet tho!]

doug57 - 2009-07-27 21:30:00
72

Doug now thats a very good point there. I use my crockpot alot too and yes it frees up the day. So when you are helping the lovely ladies with their first quilts and telling them to get rotary cutters etc you will also have to say and a crockpot hehe :)

coalrange1 - 2009-07-27 22:11:00
73

Now thats a good idea Never thought of a crockpot ummm briscoes slaes might just keep an eye out for one as I sew till 3pm then come on trade me and I am always buring my diner,. Sorry guys can not get the hang of cuting abd pasting etc so have to wait till my granddaughter turns up and does that for me then Ill load the photos of my sppare room, lounge and dining roon.cuttingroom and the cormer in my bedroom which has overflowed from the wardrobe.
Nice to see this thread still going

dilligaf_dah - 2009-07-28 15:15:00
74

lol i have a crockpot in saying that most of the dinners i cook are pulled outta thin air about 20 mins before hubby gets home

liz_taylor - 2009-07-28 15:41:00
75

Me too I love my crockpot, just let anybody try and take it from me!!!!

lol I think I've seen a car bumper sticker like that as well!..But sometimes it's good to be ruthless [that's what I'm doing]..I'm selling fabric leftover from projects [and believe me I've used the fabric several times already in scrappy quilts!] and that is enabling me to hit buttons on here and hit patchwork shops and buy MORE fabric to freshen my stash up and give a greater mix!..plus both of my daughters have become rather opinionated about what they 'want' and 2 nieces have had or are having babies..So I have the excuse to buy! lol

doug57 - 2009-07-30 16:08:00
79

my goal is to have tidy shelves like yours coalrange! My sort out over the last few weeks has seen most of my fabric spread around the spare room and dining room..snaplock bags have been in demand as I've 'tried' to sort strips of various widths into bags, all 'little' pieces into more bags for applique work, all the 2.5" squares together and the 5" squares together, I've uncovered some beautiful 'almost' finished applique work that I started years ago..and fortunately still like! lol..But my goodness me..my hubby would have kittens if he knew the dollar value of it all! lol

doug57 - 2009-07-30 16:13:00
80

lets talk about time management eh... I have several frozen meals in freezer, A HUGE lasagne for tonight [I know they'll be leftovers!] pumpkin soup prepared- so tomorrow nights dinner is organised..today I did baking and housework ...TOMORROW is all mine! lol..As soon as the kids step out of the house in the morning, I will be pressing a quilt top, pinning it together and spending the day machine quilting!..I want it done and dusted by the end of the weeken, so I can start another quilt on monday!!! I even popped to spotlight today and got additional reels of thread..I didn't want to risk running out! FINGERS CROSSED that nothing crops up to stop me! :)))

doug57 - 2009-07-30 16:18:00
81

Doug you are an amazing lady :) I have a confession here, ok so since I dont have your eye for colours I am copying your colour combinations. I just loved the floral strips you sold. Found enough in my cupboard plus a gorgeous skirt from the op shop and have cut 3" lengths am joining them together diagonally into a square and then the border will be more of the same but square around it....they are all tiny florals blacks, burgundys, browns, greys and dark pinks. I am ragging the lengths, it has a black blacking which will show in the ragged bits. I have only done square raggie ones so fingers crossed it will look ok it is so far. Have my fingers crossed for you Doug that you will have no interuptions 2moro :)

:)... Your comment on the $$$ cost whoa it all adds up fast. I shop at my local craft shop they have a huge amount of everything, they have a thing where you get a dollar back for every $10 spent so once you have $250 spent you get $25 to spend hmmmm it comes around way too quick. My hubby would have kittens too although then again I was fighting on an auction for fabric the other night and I gave up and hubby said what wheres your fighting spirit you could of won that soooo must be all ok lol

Holly Glad you got message hehe Just had a friend texting me that she has sewing withdrawals eeeek sounds gruesome lol at least there is a cure. Doug you must print that 'winner' one out too Im afraid yoour kinda in that league too aye another winner hehe ok sorry being cheeky yet again my apologies to you ;)

coalrange1 - 2009-07-30 17:39:00

It's therapeutic having piles of fabric! It's very comforting to even just pull it out, stroke it, look at the glorious colours and put it carefully back again..I find it soothing!

doug57 - 2009-07-30 18:38:00
87

Take note everybody Poor Doug above ;) thats what happens to you when you do housework and baking and no sewing for a whole day. Doug dont wait till morning get the sewing machine out now you'll feel much better.......hahaha

coalrange1 - 2009-07-30 19:00:00
88

ha! so much for there being leftover lasagne!..I came back from watching my daughter play netball [rainy weather and a loss!] Hubby dished up..and it's ALL been scoffed! No way amd I cooking tomorrow..I will double-check the freezer tonight, but certain we have left over beef strog', cottage pie and roasts hidden!
And my sewing machine IS out!..But I need to 'blob' tonight, It's one of those times that I know if I start that I'll regret it!..Better to be fresh tomorrow....Altho' I 'might' go and look for the freezer paper and trace up the shapes for the applique for mondays quilt!

doug57 - 2009-07-30 19:12:00
89

it's a bit sad isn't it? to stroke fabric!!! lol

doug57 - 2009-07-30 19:13:00

Hahaha I havent done it yet notice I did say yet. Familys wondering why Im laughing so much. Have a good nite Doug you'll be ok :)

coalrange1 - 2009-07-30 19:20:00
91

doug57 OH MY GOODNESS it sounds like you need a JAB from a QUILTING NEEDLE!!!!!!. Omlettes are a good quick meal!!!

jules97 - 2009-07-30 19:43:00
92

Hehe A jab from a quilting needle hahaha very clever Jules it just might work. Doug hope your ok, come back in when you can and let us know. We all care about you on here :)Have a good nights sleep dreaming quilts.

coalrange1 - 2009-07-30 21:59:00
93

Hi all you clever ladies!!! Hope you are all well. Coalrange, youir cuboard has inspired me to sort all my stuff out....or at least think about it, lol. I'm lucky enough to have a big workshop and office/dark room, as I work from home. And yet, I have arts and crafts stuff laying around in EVERY room in my house. So this weekend I'm going to get organized.

haagen4 - 2009-07-31 07:16:00
94

Doug57 I do a bit of mosaicing too. I think I love quilting because it is like mosaicing with a different medium. This weekend I plan on starting a birdbath, and finishing a quilt....and.....starting another quilt, lol

haagen4 - 2009-07-31 07:19:00
95

Yesterday I discovered a quilting shop in a small arcade in Henderson. My teen had to restain me from going in as we were in a hurry. I stood at the window trying to absord it all, and have decided I will sneak back there soon, when I have more time! Fabric was all $11 a metre.

haagen4 - 2009-07-31 07:29:00
96

ooh it's too cold to do mosaicing at the moment!..I bought some 'dargit' [google it!] and when the weather gets warmer, I will cover a cane chair with chicken wire and darjit and then mosaic it to death with flowers!..But I agree haagen..mosaicing and quilting work the same way..break/cut something up and put it together in a different way! Right...off to sew!..Have a break planned in a couple of hours, when I'll zap to the P.O and buy a coffee, read newspaper. IF [when!]the quilt is complete..I'll post a picture!

doug57 - 2009-07-31 09:08:00
97

yay.. finally convinced hubby that him taking over my craft room/study with his stupid trains was gonna result in something getting broken if i couldn't get into my fabric draws. Now i have it back, and managed to spend about 3 hours going through bags of stuff i've been given

liz_taylor - 2009-07-31 17:35:00
98

Good One Liz That was clever, glad you have your room back :) I have realised I said on here that I was only going to buy fabric that I needed that could be used immediately hmmmm so how come Im getting these piles of fabric - 3 or 4 meters of matching fabrics in piles tied with a ribbon ready for my next quilt and the next and the next.... maybe Im just not sewing fast enough yeah thats what it is hahaha lol

coalrange1 - 2009-07-31 21:52:00
99

still working my way through all the fabric scraps i have, but i'm pretty sure i've weeded out all the best quilting ones, however will prob end up turning most of the stuff that isn't usable into quilts.. i'm gonna aim to make my quilts out of as much recycled fabric as possible... old duvet covers and pillowcases and the like

liz_taylor - 2009-08-01 11:55:00
100

ummmm how did that happen?? haven't finished sorting out the pile yet and i have another 6+ meters to add to it... stupid spotlight and their $6 homespun
