does anyone know anything about Mexican? gold? coins? esp with an eagle at the top??--i have asked to obtain one !!!! but i suspect they are fakes mainly--supposedly about the size of a nz $2

I have a book on world gold coins and the only Mexico one that is about the size of a NZ$2 is a 2 Pesos of 1919-45. There are plenty with the eagle on but most are much smaller or larger than NZ $2.
I hope that helps.

Hi. I might get some hate outta this but dealing with a deceased estate I have a large amount of NZ coins, I don't really have the time needed to check which years or faults are 'rare', people seem to like making things outta coins so what are coin collectors opinion about seeing a rare coin getting drilled or melted into something? Are there any sites that list coins that are rare? I noticed little to no interest for overseas coins so I ended up making an album for some of those as they really seem unique. I have the same problem with stamps. I already have my own themed album finished. Just wanting some advice. Cheers

There are coin dealers in all major and many urban areas. They are reputable and probably the best people to approach with a large amount and estate lots. There are many sites that list rare coins. Google is your friend in that respect.

Thanks we hauled them in different trips down from Northland, now only a bus traveller I'm not sure I could carry them into another town, as I don't know of any coin dealers in Kawerau. I'm lucky coins are not that big so I'll keep slugging it out listing on trademe when I have the time. Are there any coin expos? Or organisations/publications that offer a notice board where collectors are listing what they want? I tried looking things up online but there just seemed to be a lot of debating, I do look up different coins now and again but some reason I thought there might have been a list some where?

Jaytala:

There are books available, even here on TM. What are the date ranges and values of your coins from NZ and elsewhere? Posting pix on here could yield some useful answers. Sometimes the values of coins can seem very arbitrary. A certain coin from 1922 can be worth very little, while the same coin from 1923 can be worth heaps. A lot depends on condition as well.

As shayne mentioned, grading is very subjective. Opinions are like bums: everybody has one. Since you asked, I would consider Choice Very Fine a reasonably conservative grade. It might qualify as Extremely Fine. I will also add the caveat that Australian coins are not my strong suit.

hello perfectly.frank good to see you in here, that up to you but i do have plenty of coins thankyou.
and to answer your question i am a chef one of nz finest back in 70s & 80s & 90s work in some of new zealands top resturants and over seas as-well,

Thanks for that, shayne! It's great to have a good set of photography instructions to which to refer people who come in with photo questions. I did not have the instructions from the previous thread, so that all needed to be said.

Not much to add, except that I always use manual focus. As auto systems get better and better, they may become easier to rely on for good results. I did not know about spot focus, so that's a help for me. I'll have to find my camera instructions.

Also, in the absence of a tripod, I have relied on putting my elbows on a flat surface with the camera held with both hands. I hold the camera to my eye and rest my head against a wall. This allows my to use myself as a tripod. The only trick is finding somewhere to do it that also allows in good natural light.

If history is any guide, you will have already found that you have been blacklisted by the seller. When you ask what someone more experienced thinks, may I ask "With respect to what, exactly?"

I'm not being cheeky, but we are proceeding cautiously with delicate traders who to easily see some questions as personal attacks. Our last Coin Club was almost to 3,000 posts but was deleted for reasons that remain ambiguous, though I suspect an "aggrieved" party complained You may find us a bit reserved in the interest of not upsetting the applecart (read playing by the rules and/or preserving the thread).

So shayne45 if the coin club is full of gossip, why do you come in here then?
and if the coin was not a fake, why did the trader pull the auction then?

or are you speaking for him?

You are right about the blacklisting and that denies me the chance to defend or add to my question, the whole of TM gets to see the so called reason I asked that question and why the seller had to withdraw the auction. You have to ask yourself if a seller won't supply a decent picture of both sides of a high value coin should I be cautious here? And yes I believe that coin to be a fake/copy

brucie69 - 2012-08-17 22:09:00
99

Yes, brucie, the Q&A function is a bit that way, but it cuts in both directions as the withdrawal of an auction can make a seller appear less than credible.

echoriath - 2012-08-17 22:24:00

highlighting suspect auctions needs to be controlled

sorry i disagreed..you guys do it in the stamp club.as-well sorry to say.

So we all do it,the coin club and the stamp club,we try to warn people about other people auctions and what we think about there coins or stamps.
