| Throw it out. Before scientists were blinded by kale’s health food halo, they studied its horrific effect on livestock. Farmers had been mystified by the births of lambs that already had goiter. Researchers experimented with kale on sheep and rabbits with grisly results. Turns out kale does contain a goitrogen, thiocyanate, which is chemically very similar to deadly cyanide. Some young lambs were stillborn, their brain development stunted by their goiters. The consumption of kale had blocked their thyroid’s ability to function properly even in the presence of proper iodine consumption. lythande1 - 2017-04-23 08:19:00 |
| Ok if you boil it first but no better than silver beet for you. Ok as kale chips. JUst don't put it in raw smoothies! katalin2 - 2017-04-23 10:51:00 |
| So, if you drown it with enough seasonings or dressings, it's edible? Doesn't sound like fun. amasser - 2017-04-23 11:31:00 |

| "Goitrogens are chemicals in food such as kale, cruciferous vegetables and soybeans. Many, but not all, green vegetables contain some levels of goitrogens. Even when eaten frequently, foods containing goitrogens will not cause thyroid disease in healthy people. You need only monitor goitrogen intake after you have been diagnosed with thyroid disease. Kale and green vegetables are very healthy foods, rich in nutrients, and do not need to be avoided completely. If you have thyroid disease, continue to eat these foods cooked. Dietary guidelines given by your doctor should take precedence." Edited by lnc at 9:33 am, Tue 25 Apr lnc - 2017-04-25 09:33:00 |

| When babysitting grandies recently, miss 4 assured me that kale is EXACTLY the same as fish & chips! Seeing that all theirs in the garden had been used up perhaps we should have the F&C for tea instead! donna23 - 2017-04-27 15:42:00 |

| Im just replanting the vege garden with amongst other things some Cavelo Nero (type of kale). I wouldnt rave over it bit it works well when I want a simple meal of noodle soup with some greens in it. And I like those pick and come again sort of veges as I would never be able to eat a whole cabbage or cauli on my own, but something like this or spinach or Tatsoi is perfect for me. dibble35 - 2018-04-15 08:57:00 |
