THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
9651

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

To post a photo: click on My Trade Me, then on "View My Trade Me". Then scroll way down toward the bottom to "My Photos" and click on that. Click "upload photo" and follow the instructions on-screen from there. Once done, you can copy-and-paste the link to your picture into a message posted here.

The wonders of US grading again. I wonder what "VF detail" is meant to mean - the bits that aren't worn flat are VF, perhaps?

Indeed - portraiture was a lot better than that in his day.

Thanks, Lindsay - haven't seen this one. If it's purely a sports medal then it's out of range, but if it's got a commemorative angle to it (25th/50th anniversary event, for example), then it would count. Is there anything on the other side, or is it blank for engraving? Cheers, Martin

Hi. I've come across a 1933 NZ half crown and a 1933 NZ three-penny piece among a lot of what look like Russian coins, and a few medallions with red, white, and blue ribbons issued in 1953 for the Queens coronation. Is there any value in the stuff except the Russian coins pleas

Marginal - silver value only for the NZ silver coins unless they're in really good original condition, and the medals sell for about $8 on TM if still in good order (no scratches or stains, etc.)

It should at least be listed under Replicas.

Not a name that rings a bell - it could be a pseudonym to identify which lots come from the same source, in which case it would be known only to the auction house.

It's a proof striking with a mintage of something like 3, so very different to the $15-$20 items that you and I get to see :-)

Far too rich for me! But I like the Elizabeth II Proof 1/2 Penny 1962 PR64 Brown PCGS, KM23.2. Neon violent and magenta hues make a statement when this coin is rotated in the light.
What was it dipped in to get those colours?

A fellow I knew on a US coin board had recipes for all kinds of chemicals you could fry coins in to give interesting toning effects - not that I ever kept the details or would endorse such treatment.

probably not dipped in anything, it's a proof coin so not uncommon for it to be a little bit colourful .Although I think the main selling point for that particular coin is that it's for 1962!!!

The style reminded me of the "Bradford Exchange" CLOs issued in the name of various small countries around the world - and it turns out both come from the Commonwealth Mint.

Why are sellers placing exorbitantly high premiums on silver and gold sales?
Much higher rates above spot prices than anywhere else I've seen in the world.......but then.....NZ goods and services are also as high as London....the most expensive city in Europe.

dtpapa wrote:

I just had to buy mine from Chris Eimer direct :-) It's a beautifully produced book, but a warning: it's very hit-and-miss in terms of content. I guess the number of UK medals privately produced is so huge it's impossible to get anywhere near completion, and probably more than half of what I look for isn't listed. A comprehensive catalogue would have to be 2, 3 or more times the size. But I know the difficulty of stuff falling through the cracks with my involvement in the MacMaster series so I can't criticise too much :-)

translateltd - 2020-01-30 06:55:00
9692

yes except Eimer has jacked up the price! Although I guess Eimer must be running low on copies by now, and the edition is 2010 so about time for a new edition. Would hate to purchase one now and a new cheaper edition then comes out! Print run of 2000 seems very low to me, seems a bit suspicious surely there must be more collectors than that who would want one (unless they're all cheap like me and would rather spend the money on a nice medal!!!)

The market for books doesn't seem as big as it should be - we need to push the "Buy The Book Before The Coin" message as hard as possible still! Bear in mind the print run for the NZ medal books is only in the 100-200 range (future rarities!), so 2000 for Eimer is pretty much in proportion.

translateltd - 2020-01-31 05:34:00
9694

true, although to be fair I think there is a larger would wide market (even in proportion) for British medals over NZ ones. I'd also think (although I don't have actual evidence) that there are a higher proportion of British collectors of British medals compared to NZ collectors of NZ medals.

My Eimer is 1987 and my Dan Fearon is 1984. Getting dated but then so are the medals listed. I think moomoos once had an Eimer listed long ago but it probably sold. But on books ~ I ordered and paid for David Sear's 'A Beginner's Guide to Ancient Greek Coins' at the start of August (pre-publication). Just had the money refunded on the grounds it was no longer available??? His 5 book set of 'Roman Coins and their Values' is a valuable resource as are his others. Hope he is OK.

I see it's unavailable at Amazon, too, and Bookdepository doesn't list it. There is this, scheduled for December this year, which suggests there's more in the pipeline:

Interesting - cornucopia symbol would be Paris Mint so an official restrike. I wasn't aware of these. I still need to do some research into a thin uniface version I have of this, which I assume must be an electrotype of some sort.
