THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
9601

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

To post a photo: click on My Trade Me, then on "View My Trade Me". Then scroll way down toward the bottom to "My Photos" and click on that. Click "upload photo" and follow the instructions on-screen from there. Once done, you can copy-and-paste the link to your picture into a message posted here.

How do you go about getting PCGS and/or NCG Certification? How much does it cost? How long is the process? And would you recommend it for rare or special Commemorative NZ coins?
Anyone had experience with this?
Thank you.

Personal opinion is that I don't see the point unless you're planning to sell on the US market. Slabbing isn't the norm here yet (thankfully), and the grade assessment will be on a US standard, so on other markets allowance has to be made for the fact the grades will be a half to a whole grade out, depending which of the US standards is applied.

I can remember a number of years ago being approached by a collector in the States wanting various N.Z. Coins that he didn't have. I supplied everything he wanted apart from the '35 crown. He then got then slabbed and I was so amazed at what they valued them at! About two to three grades above my grading! And then he turned around and sold the collection and made megabucks!

That's one of the problems I have with international grading and catalogue prices - if we take, say, a VF price for an NZ coin in a US catalogue, does that refer to "our" VF or theirs? It's almost certain something we call VF will be one of the many subsets of XF once it gets to the US and be priced accordingly.

Same goes for sellers stamp listing 2377751023
How does "$1 Reserve!! Cat $140000!! If Genuine. Probably not! But, nice to have one" and then
" Note. All our coins and stamps come with a 100% guarantee of authenticity. We are Licensed 2nd Hand dealers in NZ." get on the same page?

The 'almost' is possibly on a similar scale to the one used to describe near earth objects that pass outside the orbit of the moon and are said to have 'almost' hit earth.

Hi is greed and over grading stopping coin collecting from growing as a lot of coins are way over price and also over graded and on top of that fakes on the market. My 2 cents worth.

Sadly the answer could be yes. Take the ancients category ~ a large proportion of the items are scrap metal that should be in a rubbish bin. The dealers bringing this junk in are akin to criminals. At the other end of the time scale many issuing authorities are just churning out high priced non circulating "legal tender". Look at the Australian output of commemoratives. It is beyond a joke. But what would I know.

Just got quite a shock to learn that Jarrod Braid, who was a regular contributor at the time of the "small change" changeover and for a few years afterwards, died suddenly in his sleep a couple of years ago at just 37. I must have missed the news at the time. I'm sure others on the message board will remember him.

Hi you probably are aware but just in case. there is a private museum in Cobden opposite side ot the river from Greymouth , that is selling up. I recently bought a number of items and i noticed that he had a lot of coins ..perhaps someone should seek him out and enquire ? I know nothing about coins so did not really look at them. 1 Pitt Street Cobden Greymouth

Jarrod was far too young to go. Just like I was shocked when I realised that anna95 and jackian were no longer around. They were great and generous people. Ian was always welcoming at the Tauranga Numismatic meetings and you would get a charming email from Anna every so often to keep in touch.

I hadn't heard about Anna - that's two shocks in a short space of time. Always enjoyed dealing with her. Just googled up the obit and see it's 3½ years already.

I assume there will be in due course. 2015 is the latest so far (released earlier this year).

Tricky - and even the comments on various websites are inconsistent. One says that digital-dot serial numbers are fake, yet one presumably legit bullion house has cards illustrated with digital-dot serials. And then there are tales of sellers swapping out the real bar for a fake in the genuine packaging, so it's a bit of a minefield unless buying from PM directly.
I hope for the seller's sake it's genuine if he indeed was given it in lieu of payment - someone showed me an 'ancient coin' he'd been given by way of payment, with assurances it was highly valuable, but it was straight off one of those 1970s blue cards with low-quality reproductions stuck to it.

If the jeweller was good enough to be able to tell it was genuine, you would of thought he would have also been good enough to tell the seller at current spot prices was worth $2250, but carded and also from Perth Mint would retail at closer to $2400
There are places in his area that can do a non invasive test with no damage to packaging or contents
Think the lack of any of the above tells you more than his story does.

Maybe Gold Dainty Opal is a brand name. I'll study the picture several more times as the day goes on for good measure ...

Should that be 1845? I can't think of any 1945 crowns. Would depend entirely on condition, in any case.

anyone made any coin purchases from ebay since the new gst rules came into force? I've made a couple, but gst does not appear to have been added, as far as I can tell, or maybe I am missing something? Where should we see the gst -I assumed it would magically appear upon checkout but haven't noticed anything!!!!

No - though my latest purchase from BookDepository.com had NZ GST added this time. And I noticed when I went to order DVDs from Amazon.co.uk recently they said they wouldn't ship non-digital recordings to NZ any longer, so that's probably their response to the GST requirement - too hard, buy from the US site instead.

And now something to go bump in the day ... If anyone has examples of the plastic decimal familiarisation "coins" made by Martin Plastics in Levin in 1966/67 (standard reverse, large number on obverse), I'd appreciate it if you have the chance to check the "number" side for the maker's details, please. Looking at two sets here, there seem to be three varieties: no maker's mark (1), "M.P. LEVIN" in small letters at the bottom (2), and "MARTIN PLASTICS LEVIN" in full in small letters following the curve of the rim at right (3).
The 1, 2, 5 and 10c are all type 2, and all medal alignment (both sides upright); both 50c are type 1 and coinage alignment (opposite sides at 180°); and for the 20c I have one each of type 1 and type 3, both medal alignment.
Curious to know if other permutations exist.
