Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Simple answer (from KM): KM865a (1918-20) was 19mm in diameter and weighed 3g; KM875 (1920-38) was 17mm in dia and weighed 2g. That may be the key info you need :-) There's also the large bronze type (different design, 25.1mm and 5g) which was struck through to 1921, so there are three sizes for 1920.
And in case it's of any relevance, KM has the designer's name slightly wrong for the Cu-Ni coin: Lindauer not Lindaver.

Cool, thanks for that! I had noted the weight difference on some sources, but not the size difference. That's plenty enough to go on.

yup nice lot of medals but it would feel weird to be the owner of items that represent the career of someone else -really should be in possession of LIpscombe family, but maybe there is no one left to hand them on to, or descendants not interested, need money, who knows?

hmmm ... my latest research has shown that a bahama mule goes for quite a bit more on ebay than it does on trademe!

A case in point,1649547500

which has found its way onto ebay at over 6x original purchase price!

Hard to believe it went so cheap on trademe

yup from now on I'm going to make it a point to bid on every single bahama mule that comes up on trademe just to make sure a decent price is achieved, and to limit the incentive for resale on ebay!

'Buy cheap and sell dear' is a basic principle of business. Why is it an issue if there is no skulduggery going on? The coins don't appear to have been doctored in between times, and if folks overseas are prepared to pay high, then all good things to the fellow prepared to make the effort of re-listing them. Any of us could do the same if sufficiently motivated. If buyers are not prepared to bid up to the same prices in NZ, that probably is no more than a reflection of the state of the market here vs. elsewhere. 15-20 years ago I had a regular buyer in the US for all Bahamas mules I could get my hands on, and at the exchange rates we had at the time, the prices were very good in NZD.

already on my watchlist chefman!

looks a decent example, Jessica has managed to take a decent picture of this one. Looks pretty much uncirculated, although not BU by any means (by which I mean brilliant AND full red!).

I would probably bid 80-90 for it, but it would depend who was bidding against me. I see Jason has a bid, and I would be happy to let him have it at a bargain price as he is a good man and a true numismatic enthusiast.

But if it was a reseller I might go up to 110, maybe more if I suffer a temporary moment of insanity as often happens to me when bidding!

but Martin did you not wonder why your US buyer wanted all those Bahamas mules? Maybe he was reselling and making huge profits off your work? Also there is the issue of patriotism, or lack of it in helping to depopulate NZ of all the Bahama mules. I consider the Bahama mule to be a local coin for NZ people and not foreigners!

mind you just because a few clowns on ebay set exorbitant prices does not mean many are actually sold at that price. I did a check for Bahama mules sold by auction on ebay and the prices were a fair bit lower, although still higher than trademe.

I was making a good margin - if he had a bigger seller network to market to, then great for him. Not my concern.

English notes, I have quite a bit of old currency and didn't realise they've changed their notes. Any suggestions? (I hope notes won't be out of place on this board) Thanks in anticipation

Depends on how old but most of the old English notes are still redeemable (even 1 pound notes from 1940) at NZ Banks and they should be able to swap them for new notes if you want. Normally no fee to exchange. Best bet is to pop in and ask or post some photos for us

Thanks for that, they would be at least 11 years old though I can't believe that banks wouldn't charge a fee.

Haha yes hard to believe I know but for just exchanging pounds for pounds both banks I have worked at have not charged. If you are changing to NZ dollars then a fee could be charged depending on if you are a customer of that bank or not

I'm going to put a last minute bid for 83 on the bahama, so if there is anyone who wants it you should either make sure you have a bid higher on it already, either autobid or actual, or make sure you are there at the end of the auction ready to outbid me. Of course if by that time the price is already more than 83 then I will not bid at all!

Not so sure - I've had gold photograph almost white, and (untarnished) silver come out almost brown due to lighting issues. At my low end of the skill scale, almost any combination is possible.

Can anyone shed some light on why the 1971 10 cent coin with a mintage of 2 mil plus is $80 in UNC ? whereas the set with only 20,000 catalogues at only $5 so not sure how that works out. Also the mintage either side of 1971 are about the same but showing prices well below ... cheers
