Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Curious - another seller on TM has listed bulk silver 3ds for below melt a few times, and each time, as far as I recall, bidding has started early and progressed to quite a battle by the time the auction has finished, resulting in a quite satisfactory price for the seller (and presumably also the buyer, since there'd be a few nicer grades and varieties in there). So I tried the same as an experiment - with 36 hours to go, fewer views, no bids ... wonder what I'm doing wrong, other than "borrowing" someone else's idea.

Hi Martin,
Probably because they list these regulary and as such are saved to favourites
Mowbrays have a pretty big following

I would almost bet my last dollar on at least 4 members who will show at auction end. Think you maybe will get very close to your buy now price

Would be interesting to see how great an effect that has - have never used that function before.

I feel your pain and maybe we need to try $1 reserves more. $1 listings get more people adding them to the watch lists 27 compared to your 15. It does not always work so is a risk to take I guess. The other draw card on that auction is they state they are not searched through so the thrill of a unsearched lot (if such a thing really exists these days).

Same thing happened with this listing 1410984377 with 15 people watching yet I am the only watching your listing of the same item.

The other thing to try is a different categories every now and then.

Yes, unsearched is interesting. You have to check the dates to be sure they're all pre-47, and would anyone really leave a 35 in there on the way past? My stuff's ex a deceased hoarder's accumulation - he wasn't really a collector but would have picked any 35s out before stashing them away anyway. I presume that's obvious to potential bidders and that I haven't just sunk my chances even further :-)

Indeed ... I did send a catalogue to Uganda a while back :-) Took a month to get there, but the mail got through.

Been a while since I listed much, but I always tried to have a real assortment with a narrow window of time in which everything closed. It was a real polyglot approach as far as varieties of listings, both in terms of countries, quality, metal content, etc.

Even so, it has always seemed that certain people are especially willing to splash out on common-as things like silver Kennedy halves in no great state, and various other silvers. Once in a while my silver stuff would jump, though there was never much rhyme or reason to when things spiked.

That was an interesting question on the auction.

4.3 Your obligations as a buyer
You must be located in New Zealand or Australia to buy on Trade Me. People outside of these countries are not permitted to purchase items on Trade Me.

Also not allowed to sell (4.2a)

Should also be a rule that people from Palmerston North should not be allowed to bid against me

I assume in such cases the buyers are NZ residents who are temporarily elsewhere ... surely it couldn't be anything else ;-)

71c - before TM fees, taxes, etc ... :-) There are more, still, so I may do similar bulk lots now and then as time permits.

I've seen a few mints like that - they've usually been chewed a bit by then.

Here's the website jym was referring to:

As to rarity, which gives some indication of value, how rare it is can be difficult to know, since no one really knows how many there are. Condition is also an important factor in determining possible value. If you are keen to sell it, probably better to do so while interest is fresh. Be sure your photos are quite clear and close-up. Best to turn the flash off and take photos under indirect natural light. Practice till you get it right.

As to humour derived from spelling errors, we coin collectors are a detail-oriented lot, and we find such things priceless.

Quiz time!

How should this coin be described?
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/652142676.jpg

1. above average
2. aEF
3. EF
4. AU
5. virtually uncirculated
6. uncirc
7. BU

winner gets a chocolate fish!

dtpapa - 2017-09-30 16:45:00

I'd go average but probably listed as BU

According to Clarke:
Fine: The feathers will show on all parts of the Kiwi's body but the high parts will show wear, especially on the back, neck and leg.
So by that, Fine and cleaned. Probably a bit tougher than I would have called without checking.

http://www.noble.com.au/auctions/lot?id=367030

Have a look at this item, and after careful consideration of the photos provided, which of the following critiques of the grading do you most agree with,

1. Too difficult to assess from the photos, but have complete trust in the competency of the grading.
2. Grading is very accurate.
3. Looks about right.
4. Looks a little on the generous side, but about right
5. At least one grade too high.
6. Well over graded for sure.
7. Grader should give himself an uppercut.

Well, there's an evident knock/scratch on the king's throat, and some staining behind the head and around some of the lettering, so I'd delete the word "brilliant" straight away. Discolouration around the letters suggests that area was too hard to clean around, but I'm not sure I'd want to make that call on this one.
