Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

hmmm ... except it was probably worth 100. It certainly isn't AU. Perhaps aEF at best. But it just goes to prove my assertion that the coin market on trademe is a pile of sh!te. Too many idiot buyers and cowboy sellers. The scary thing is that the auction winner will very likely find someone even dumber than himself to onsell it to!

ffs kevy is making a small fortune from me! I had the exact same coin on sale for weeks at less than half that price with no takers!

This song from Peter Griffin aptly describes what kevy is doing to me!

A bit like coin collecting, its often the quality we seek not always the quantity.

Any NZ (or British) coin that's 3d (threepence) or greater in value and made before 1946 will have a 50% silver content. Any of those same British coins made in 1919 or earlier will be 92.5% silver (aka sterling). What are the denominations of the 1770 George IV and the 1876? Pennies? The 1770 George IV strikes me as odd because he had not taken the throne yet, but British coins are not my strong suit.

The 1898 Queen Vic sounds like a sovereign or half sovereign.

The conventional wisdom is do NOT clean your coins if you plan to sell them. Leave that to a buyer to decide. If you plan to keep them and just want some idea of value, be aware that at whatever point you decide to sell them, you will shut out some of the market selling incorrectly cleaned coins, especially since some collectors take the view that there is no correct way to clean coins.

Posting photos would be the best way to get really helpful answers. If you need guidance on doing that, please say so.

I'll take a closer look later, but I'll just reiterate about waiting to clean anything until you hear from some folks that know these coins better. Might pay to work on the photos, too. They're OK, but if you find a little flower setting on your camera, that's for taking close-up photos. It would also pay to turn off the flash.

The Elizabeth shilling (assume it's a shilling if it's roughly the size of the bronze penny based on the photo) would have to be worth something, even just as a filler item. It's a shame the effigy is so worn, as the rest of the coin doesn't look so bad.

The George III halfpenny is quite strong - these are usually found very worn. As for the 1898 coin, we'd need to know the diameter and/or weight (20 mm / 4 g = half sovereign; 22 mm / 8 g = sovereign).

Coin 3 is a shilling of Elizabeth I, late 16th century. The symbol before POSVI will date it more closely - I'll check. The legend on the shield side is biblical and means "I have made the lord my helper". As I mentioned the other day, the worn portrait is unfortunate, but it's presumably still fine as a filler example.
Edit: I *think* the mintmark is an escallop, which would date it to 1584-86.

Additionally, gammy, the half-sovereign is 22 karat gold.
