800 Don't bank on it, Don. LOL. But if a national government considers selling it I'm sure they will keep us posted!

50c Lake coleridge booklet question Hi, just wondered if anyone else has purchased 50c booklet lately. Just noticed the outside of the stamp where the perforations are is yellowy/white colour instead of white, leaving the frame of stamp and frame bit left on the book yellowish colour. Have they changed the frame colour? Thanks

stamps still on enevelop Hi, when we remodelled our kitchen we found an enevelop with its stamp still on it. It is an old nz government tower life insurance stamp. Is this collectible or has any value?

1984 complete collection (NZ) I just bought the complete collection of 1984 NZ stamps (issued by NZ Post) for $21.00. Did I pay too much?

Couple of things - may have to split posts ! First thing - does anyone know why there is a limit of the number of buynows that can be done in 24 hours ? After about 20-odd last night I got clicked off - trying to go silly on filling gaps but TM won't let me buynow ! Crazy to me but perhaps there is a legitimate reason ?

And the second post .. US precancels. As getting replies from the Americans is a waste of time, does anyone here know where I can get a catalogue/listing of all pre-cancels including town-names for all issues ? I got a supplement for one a couple of years ago but without the start point it's kinda hopeless. Cheers, Mark

Expert Opinion http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=181054057

Anyone know how much this would be worth? I personally don't think it's worth more than $10.00.

Re 811 It's worth what someone is prepared to pay for it ! It all depends how long a piece of string is. :o)

RE 812 Stamp collections being sold online can sometimes be grossly overpriced.

819 I have heard the saying 'In times of doom stamps boom.' I'm not sure if this is true or not. Perhaps if you have money to invest it could be a safe option but for the average person like me you are probably thinking carefully about the amount you are spending on stamps.

819 It is true to some extent in my opinion but be careful.I bought up heaps of local postage (Current Decimal issues)in the mid 70,s to early 80,s and might as well have been buying toilet paper for Pygmy's.I have used and am still using them for local postage .The investment for the most part is in the older pre-decimal stamps in my opinion .I tend to use Four C's ,Centering ,Colour ,Condition,Cancellation in a lot of my collecting and concentrate on Pre decimal.More comment from Dealers who have more knowledge on the subject would be appreciated.Stamp collecting
can be a highly personal and diverse hobby and every one can have different collecting fields. Regards Paul.

NZ Post - Positive ? Oh dear Don - surely you're not suggesting that they start producing stamps for the purpose of sending mail when needed - rather than just revenue gathering every month from completist idiots like me who have to have everything right down to the differences in mesh ? Surely not ? O sarcasm is a beautiful thing and it doesn't get more beautiful than NZ Post.

This could start a rush for thematic collectors. As of yet I have not seen the definitive book published but I'm sure it will come. They will all become gold then.

sellers that waste our time Is there any regulation that fixes the starting bid for an auction that has a 'high' reserve. Start should be at least 2/3 of the reserve if not higher. Low starts are just a waste of the bidders time. I know that they just want to start a bit of a bidding war but all it does is just drive bidders like me from their auctions. Do others agree???

warm3 - 2008-10-19 20:07:00
831

Re Reserve amounts (sort of) I tend to agree however have to say that I've done this myself. One problem I've found is knowing where to set a price for an auction. I would love to see a facility whereby a buyer could offer a price to a seller which could then be accepted or rejected.
With regard to stamp prices it does bring into question the whole area of catalogue prices and how realistic they are. If prices stamps are consistently sold for on TradeMe or ebay are nowhere catalogue price doesn't that put a big question mark over the catalogue values?

rgbh25703 - 2008-10-19 20:27:00
832

reserves + catalogues etc yes rgbh I agree. Catalogues are usually not a good guide for price but are are usually a good guide for relative scarcity. But where would the dealers be without being able to use a catalogue [and which one] when it suits them. I guess it is the idea that you use the cheapest price/type when buying and the dearest when selling. Are there any collectors in NZ who still needs a red/blue boy set [1931 health]. The prices that they get are astounding. not to mention the collecting value difference between MUH and LHM! I must get off the high horse.

the boys plus 1960 pictorial tip Precisely. I don't think they are particularly rare. Most of the big dealers would have many copies. they are just not prepared to sell them for what they are really worth. Although there were only 70 odd thousand printed most of them were kept by the 'new' collector that had the excitement of all the issues of the KG5 and the residual effects of the Victory set. Not that many were used on FDC [a justified price] and not seen very often on cover. I guess the most common would be the HM version from the earlier collections and I would have thought that a really fine [1931] dated used very desirable. In fact I don't think that very many would have been destroyed. I would have thought that a truly rare item would be the Pl 14A/15 for the 9d 1960 flag. There were about 90 sheets issued - how many were kept? And an intact plate and imprint strip well is there more than 1?? So aside from the 4d chalky plate block [hens teeth material] this would be the item to get.

Stock Books You tend to get what you pay for. Higher price does usually stand for higher quality. The stockbooks often referred to as "chinese" have nice thick heavy cardboard pages that tend to tone within 4.34 days and wreck the stamps too. But they are cheap ! Davo, Lighthouse etc are pretty good but pricey.
