Morning all, gorgeous fabric just came in post awww I want to make somehing with it now but have to finish what im doing first....
Holly, Cindy dog hubby and i used to have bikes will include pic, mines the red 250 lol i was learning ;) One day i took hubbys bike up the road just to try it (one of the black ones in pic) way too big and heavy for me, but was fun. He was watching me, I got up the road and decided to do a u-turn to go back hmmm bad move, slowed down way too much and bike fell on the road - yup embarrasing. Hubby came up to help pick it up, i was trying but was too heavy hehe. He wouldnt pick it up till he had taken photo then sent me home on it lol i never tried it again. They were fun days, oldest kids were just little and they had 50cc bikes of their own. Bikes all gone now :( you move on http://images.trademe.co.nz/photoserver/13/109086713_full.jp

Just heard of a friend of a friend ... who has an ectopic pregnancy and they are doing a hysterectomy ! she has kids but that seems crazy they say shes highly likely to have another ectopic !!!! my first pregnancy was ectopic and i went on to have kids no trouble, maybe you are high risk but that seems extreme.
Anyway back to sewing, should be outside perfect day here :)

Hi there again. I posted about a fortnight ago re advice on whether to take classes - I didn't in the end. Anyways I've decided to try patchworking myself first with help from 'you tube', books from the library and hopefully a little help from you guys:). Have been looking and decided that I probably need a rotary cutter, self healing mat and ruler. Any idea on type, sizes, length etc that you all have found useful. At the moment I'm looking at a 45mm cutter, 24 X 18 mat but not sure on ruler size. Does that sound about right? Can anyone advise on what they found worked good or didn't? Thanks again, Judy

juju40 - 2009-10-25 17:21:00
833

hi there sounds like you have it sorted i have 60x45 cm mat,45cm ruler and a 6in square, 45mm cutter and find them all good

twilight23 - 2009-10-25 17:36:00
834

Gidday Juju, i have 45mm cutter, my mats pretty much that size mines not a flash self healing one but one kids used for crafts years ago, will get a self healing one one day ... but that mat sounds fine. Ok ruler i have one called a 'new quiltline' it is 7.5cm (3" )wide and 60cm long . Stuff that has the 'olfa' trademark will cost you a fortune other brands just as good.
Cmon you guys help us out here dont want to advise juju wrong, wait till they answer before you buy anything.
Did you get your fabric squares ????

coalrange1 - 2009-10-25 17:39:00
835

Thanks for that twilight23. What is the width of the ruler ie 45 x ?. I'm not sure whether to get 5cm, 7.5 or 10. Also what brand cutter do you have? Am looking at the Olfa but see they come in the standard and also safety model. Bit of a price difference and thought the standard one looks OK? Thanks again

juju40 - 2009-10-25 17:40:00
836

Thanks Twilight i need to type with more than one finger lol
Gee after all that talk about olfa and my cutter is olfa but the rulers and squares are same whatever brand just olfa is dearer.

837

Thanks Coalrange1. Got my squares - 40 x 6 inches. Brought some cheaper plain solid colour fat quarters x 4 and a metre of white (only cost $10) from local shop so want to experiment with that first. Don't think scissors will be much good. The local shop have a pack for $55 but its a smaller mat, 6 in square & cutter. I think I'd be better to pay a bit more for the larger mat and also get a ruler. Will be back later on, Hubby and daughter both want the computer.

juju40 - 2009-10-25 17:49:00
838

I would go for a bigger matt than the one your talking about juju
mines 30x45 :( and i do find it too small sometimes.
Twilights one at 60x45 sounds perfect - try and get one of those :)
Sheesh i should type faster and think about things before i do then i wouldnt have to post so much ! sorry duh me ;)

coalrange1 - 2009-10-25 18:00:00
839

Just kicked hubby off and won this auction # 248575184 for $9.50. Ones in shop were $30 new so I think its a good deal. Oops - Daughter just informed me its a double one that can be opened either side so may be a better deal than I thought :)

juju40 - 2009-10-25 18:05:00
840

Way to go juju fantastic buy :) you did well.
So do you have a matt going tonite too and a ruler hehehe

coalrange1 - 2009-10-25 18:20:00
841

hi my ruler is 45cm x5cm cutter is kai from spotlight i think it was about $40 had it for about 6 years you can get new blades for it dont put laptop on cutting mat it gose wrinkerly lol silly me did that,
im just of to my nieces birthday dinner we are going to eat italiano yum yum

twilight23 - 2009-10-25 18:24:00
842

Our nearest Spotlight is 100 odd kms away so if I go there I'll spend more on petrol and lunch than what I would save probably. Cheapest mat I can find on Trademe is $35 (60 x 45) plus postage and our local shop has them for $40 so easier to get there. Can't find any rulers and haven't priced them in the shop so might have to wait til Tuesday. We only have 2 shops so not much selection.

juju40 - 2009-10-25 18:30:00
843

Juju your lucky to have a choice. I have one local shop but they are great.

Twilight gee your having a busy weekend, Have fun yum sounds good :)

I might start those twilight books ;)

my rulers (yes have 2) first i bought was a 1" (inch) by 12". By second and the one i use most often is a 6.5" x 12.5" which also has 30, 45 & 60 deg angles on it. I got the ones in inches because i find inches easier to work with when quilting. Only have a little 12" mat at the moment, but gonna get my dad to get me a new bigger one for my birthday (nov 10) and i just have an el cheapo 45cm rotary cutter

liz_taylor - 2009-10-25 20:06:00
845

Hi Liz, 10 Nov yay we will celebrate - what kind of cake would you like ???? anything you can dream up, surely i can google it. Have a think about it.

I have 2 measuring squares i use the most, because of the raggie quilts. An 8inch and a 6 1/2 inch.

Cindydog i hope your reading this i put you wrong ooooops sorry, its 61/2 not 7 you can get 57 squares out of 2 meters. You only need 56 for a 7x8 ohhhh hope you havent cut yet .....
Not in mood for reading so am cutting another raggie lol hehehe

coalrange1 - 2009-10-25 20:36:00

liz_taylor - 2009-10-26 11:19:00
849

Hows everyone going? Its an absolutely beautiful day here. I went to town hoping the fabric shop was open so I could buy my mat but it wasn't. Oh well, another trip into town tomorrow. Have paid for my cutter so hopefully that will arrive by the end of the week. Coalrange, I googled the 'new quiltline' ruler and have found one at Kiwiquilts for $16.10 which looks quite reasonable. So last decision is on the squares. They have a "nifty square 6.5 inches" for $13.80 or a "Easy square 8 inches" for $14.90. Figure for the extra $1odd that the 8 inch would probably be worth it. Worked it all out and for the cutter, mat, ruler and square (including postage) is going to be $88. I worked an extra nightshift on Saturday night so that will more than cover it. Now for it to all arrive and to find the time to start.

juju40 - 2009-10-26 14:39:00
850

that looks good... i agree the 8" square is probibly your best bet. No sewing done today, although am about to (FINALLY) start planing the christmas stuff... just been down too supercheap and picked up the light bulbs and wiper blade which should make my car pass it's warrent... I'm pissy, can't find any maternity pants/skirts i like, and my jeans are getting damn uncomfertable. Guess i'm gonna have to bite the bullet and make some *looks at overly large sewing list...*
