I have a box full of pre decimal coins (1000+) that my father collected in the mid 60s when he worked for a Bank. Can anybody recommend a coin dealer who might be interested in giving me a quote for the lot. I live in Auckland. Have no interest in selling them myself on trademe.

Watching with interest to see if you get $600 for the "2003 NEW ZEALAND LORD OF THE RINGS $1 SILVER PROOF". I paid $100 for mine two years ago.

Hello Peoples .
Well I'm back from my Wairarapa sojourn .
Here are the photos of the Half Farthing

On closer inspection I would down grade my initial opinion
Around all the letters it appears to be corrosion but on the die or the coin I don't Know

I couldn't find an auction on TM but there were 1 or 2 obvious fakes up a while back.

Hey Peter and Bruce, I might start an auction for a rare Churchill crown at a reserve of $700. "WTF is rare about that?!" I hear you ask. Well it's very rare to see one being offered for that price. Alternatively - 'in the 35 years I've been interested in coins I've only seen 4 Churchill crowns - so they must be rare'(!!!) (admittedly I haven't seen ANY of the 99.9% of other coins out there).
I guess it's down to experience and TMs refusal to remove an auction if they think you are sincere.

Welcome to the thread, feel free to pop in for advice!

Thanks Chrisr5. I have found some interesting coins in my collection including two NZ 3d one is a 1939 and the other a strapless 1955. I also have a 1942 and a 1946 penny, three halfpennies one is 1947, and a 1912 and 1919 British pennies. There is a coin from Oman, 2 from Thailand, an Austrian schilling, among others and an Ethopian santeem - its cool, has a lion head on one side and a type of gnu/antelope on the other (think I will keep that one).
Now I need to find out the values, if any, of the coins....
p.s. had a little girlie giggle at the last three posts after yours (referring to the up coming "hundy")

Help please from the Banknotes Brainstrust. Is my crinkled Brasch $5 on expired listing 539857728 only worth face value ?
http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.asp?id=539857728
And can I still take it to any bank to cash it ? or do I have to take to the RBNZ ? Thanks Peter

Hi Peter, your note is definately just short of an M grade (munted). It probably is only worth about face value possibly slightly more.
My note knowledge limited, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if you can still exchange it at a bank or if indeed it remains legal tender. I'm sure if NZNotes, Chefman or the other odd poster pass through they'll be able to give you a more acurate answer as to legal tender.

Hi Gheeta, With regards to your coin the condition is what will decide whether they are worth anything from a few cents to a few dollars. For example a 1942 NZ Penny in worn condition is worth a few cents but in nearly perfect is worth about $200, depending on what you are willing to part with it for and what a collector is willing to pay.

I can see you've done some research as you know about the strapless busts. Unfortunately 1956 3d is the important year for no straps, all 1955 3ds were no straps.

Not sure as to the value of the foreign coins you have. the UK 1/2 pennies can be moderately valuable in near perfect condition again, but it's very hard ot find them like that.

Hope you have some great examples, and if you want to post any pictures for an idea of grade, there is a short how to take coin pics on this page - http://www.trademe.co.nz/Community/MessageBoard/Messages.asp

I asked elsewhere and Translateltd replied that he thought they were still current so should be legal tender.

The Reserve Banks website will clarify this http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/currency/index.html I'm not sur eif banks will accept them any more. The RBNZ will always accept them as currency. To the best of my knowledge.

Hi chrisr5 & nznotes and thanks for your help. It turns out these are not M grade (Munted) ; they are RS grade (Return to Sender).
Post Shop said "refer customer to RBNZ" ; checked said site & emailed RBNZ about whether I could take to a Trading Bank and RB politely told me that trading banks are not obliged to accept notes which are no longer legal tender; so off to Wellington they go.
Overall a good outcome for me; if I was a Trading Bank I would take on the off chance of striking gold but que sera they were forgotten and are now treasurish trove.

Well it worked briefly but seems you all ran out of steam very quickly!!

Anyone seen any more of those metal work projects to make double headed $2 coins. They seem to sell a packet. Not a bad return for $4 and a bit of work on a lathe.

I saw that one it was so obviously home made. Is there not a law against tampering with current coinage.
