| Just made 10 jars of strawberry jam. Strawberries cost $10 and sugar about $5. May not be heaps cheaper than shops but certainly tastes nicer. Hope youall had a good Christmas and Happy New Year. akalea - 2008-12-27 11:05:00 |

| adding on to Leigh 71 comment you know day old cobb loaves and full vienna are good for 2 days from the bakery.....a little tip is to trickle a splash of water over them and place them in a med oven for 10 mins they come out fresh as a new baked loaf do the same for buns crossiants etc and you will never miss having that fresh bought bread again kob - 2009-01-10 16:59:00 |

| Well I made the shaving foam that was posted on here a few weeks ago. Husband didn't like it BUT I put it into a shallow muffin tray and put it in the hotwater cupboard to dry out. It makes a perfect cleansing bar for my face. It doesn't dry my skin out and I think its just as good as those expensive cleansing bars bought from the beauty houses at the chemist. I could also put rose petals or lavender into it. Yay. beagle12 - 2009-01-16 21:51:00 |
| my husband uses aqueous cream from the chemist as a shaving cream. it is about $10 for a 500g tub, which lasts him between 3-6 months depending on how often he shaves lol. it is very moisterising and can also be used as a soap for people who are allergic to soap products. dalbyj - 2009-01-18 19:26:00 |
| and now I'm going to go back through the thread (after spending all afternoon reading it) and copy down some of the fabulous ideas and recipes! I'm on an enforced holiday thanks to the recession so I figure what a perfect time to start budgeting! dalbyj - 2009-01-18 19:28:00 |

| I always freeze left over chili mince etc Just the other day ALL the kids suprised me and were home for dinner (7 of them now) and didn't have anything defrosted. I pulled out some leftover chili/mexican mince and rice and roasted them in some (very cheap @ 49 cents at mo) capisicum with grated cheese on top. Went down a treat. I just don't tolerate wastage at all! So it can be really handy to freeze even small amounts ... darlingmole - 2009-01-25 10:26:00 |
| well its the time of the year that i review by years budget and guess what I managed by negiotaion again to save GR8 amounts of money....telecom my bill was creeping up to $220 per month again (some are business calls & $20 is our $10 cell phone txt credit)so upon neg with telecom I saved $80 per month by switching to a plan called total home package I get 10 gb of broadband unlimited calls throughout nz to home phones includes monthly rental and answer phone the 2 kids cell phones on there as $10 each per month for unlimited calls to both & vicaverca 33c mobile phone calls to telecom & 39cents to vodaphone for $109 a month plus our $20 for txt phone and $3.75 for business email so that still $87.25 roughly saved a month I had to sign up 12 months or $199 penalty but who cares ill have that $87 dollars thanks in my pocket so check out your phone bill kob - 2009-01-27 12:20:00 |
| powerbill i was abit late to review that as they are done in Nov but I was paying $55 a week while the 4 of us were home now theres only 2 of us I had managed to credit up $400 in unused money so I got them to give me $250 dollars back (that was all I was allowed as there has to be enough left in there to pay next bill accounting for the furthur payments)it might as well be in my bank not theres and also I got them to downgrade my payments to $45 electivaly which just means if they feel that im getting behind in my power credit until Nov they have the right to up it again to $55 at any given month but only till Nov with written notifiaction so hey ill take the $10 savings a week thats $520 a year so check things out carefully next is the bank but because i like to keep 4 accounts operating for my budget there maybe no ley way there. kob - 2009-01-27 12:25:00 |
| I have just emailed the bank so well see waht they say about how I can save on the accounts I have but they are quite busy accounts I might addd.......I got my wood quote this morning and they have increased the truck load price by a furthur $80 from 380-450 so as I was thinking far out so now I have accounted for that $80 by reassesing my payment schemes kob - 2009-01-27 12:36:00 |
| Don't throw out soft crackers, cornflakes, chippies, biscuits etc - they can be recrunched by baking in the oven till very hot, they will harden up again on cooling. tumbleweeds2011 - 2009-01-27 19:01:00 |

| talking about banks we have just come off fixed interest on our mortage, and had a look at other banks, approached our own bank and said what can you do for us, we are looking elsewhere, quick as a flash they are giving us a further 0.35% discount off their floating rate for the life of the loan, everytime that interest rates move (down hopefully) ours will be 0.35% lower! beebs - 2009-01-28 15:09:00 |

| See that Genesis has just increased their power charges :( On a brighter note I have stewed the apple from the tree in the back yard and added stewed plums (which were only 2.99/kg) I now have 10 containers of stewed apple and plum in the freezer. Yay. beagle12 - 2009-02-02 16:59:00 |

| bumping up in help for Allors kob - 2009-02-10 08:11:00 |
| Thank you for bumping this up for me kob. I went through the budget advisory service almost 5 years ago now when hubby and I had a 3 month old and a 2 year old. It was so stressful, we lived pay to pay and even then we newver made ends meet. I swollowed my pride and asked for help. OMG they are wonderful, they have taught me life lessons on budgeting that I will be proud to pass onto anyone that wants it and our children as I dont ever want them to be in the same siuation as we were in. alebix - 2009-02-10 10:47:00 |
| to start off with we get paid fortnightly and have monthly bills, so I worked out how much was need that month eg.. xmas club is $50 and come out on the 28th, so each pay I set aside half of the bill into our bill account and leave it there for when the bill is due and then the money is there for the direct debit or AP etc.. I dont more in bank fees as we have 4 accounts and only one is not a set $5 account. All bills bar one (phone) is direct debt or AP.I am never late for a bill and with my power im paying more by DD and by winter we are so far in credit they give us our money back...for 5 years it has worked.. but I do alter a few things here and there depending on the bill... but I also make sure the bill account has zero money in it by the 1st of each month and I save that left over money if there is any. alebix - 2009-02-10 10:52:00 |
| Help! I don't know where to start.. We are a family of 5, have always "lived well" - on one ( high ) income. Now, that job is in jepordy and I don't know where to start with a budget. I have never budgeted in my life - I feel so embarrassed even saying that - it sounds so pretentious and we're not. How do I start? Am looking at the bank balanced dwindling quickly and don't know how to stop it all crashing around our ears. elleneva - 2009-02-10 11:03:00 |
| elleneva print your self a bank statement on line , pull all your important papers like insurance phone, power, car payments everything out and really go through everything, slash phone, internet, broadband and sky down to minimim packages until finances are better off, grab yourself some books from the library ef: the oily rag series they give you really good cost effective tips and tricks to use, do a complete pantry freezer stock take and plan as many meals as you can from what you have...write them down and stick to IT.. Keep a list of all contents so eg: if you have 1kg mince in freezer plan that for 2 meals and maybe if your not working cook and refreeze those meals so that while your job hunting or busy with the children tea is made kob - 2009-02-10 14:54:00 |
| ring round all your friends and see if they have excess fruit & veg that they cant use and become a pickle maker, this can then get givin as a thankyou gift in exchange for plums off a tree, or blackberries of a vine, or maybe a cabbage who knows, get your recipe books down and look for preserves, if things are really bad scones and jam fill you up just as much as a roast and full veg.....just remeber never be to proud to ask for help and you can make a meal out of potato and eggs......anything else I can help with just ask but there have already been great ideas given in this thread so start from the beginning and work your way through. kob - 2009-02-10 14:57:00 |
| thanks kob great ideas. heoj - 2009-02-10 18:04:00 |
| smelly toilet simple remedy but it works. clean up the puddle, spray white vinegar and water mix, when it dries the smell is gone! clean smell lasts a week or so heoj - 2009-02-10 23:13:00 |
| heoj give me some indication of what you are needing to know or would like to ask as I have already covered so much in thread allready. kob - 2009-02-11 07:44:00 |
| Q about the washing liquid... Can it be used in a front loader? And if so how much? TIA twinsforus - 2009-02-11 07:59:00 |
| low suds so can be used this has already been asked through the thread there are lots of front loader people whio have made comment on just this liquid through here check it out. kob - 2009-02-11 08:31:00 |
| Thanks Kob! I read the whole thread and jotted down a few things too. Then I did a stocktake of my freezer and cupboards and planned meals out of what I had - jeepers - I could feed the army for a month without too much stress! So, having realised that i sat the family down and said - no more picking at food - I've planned for everything's use and if you eat it out of turn you'll stuff up the plan! ( teenage boys - you've gotta spell it out ! ) then I looked for the bills - and what I have realised is that because everything is on AP or credit card - i didn't even know how much we were spending. $350.00 on power/gas for a month and we were away for 1 week of that! So - a very productive day yesterday - thank you - I feel a bit better today. Thank you all for all of the advise - I will keep coming back and asking for help if that's ok - I may need a bitg of motivation in the weeks ahead when we're eating rice and beans for tea! elleneva - 2009-02-11 11:00:00 |
| and yes, I can hear you all now.... "nothing wrong with rice and beans" - so it's not a complaint - have hauled the cookbooks out of the shed too - need to get creative! elleneva - 2009-02-11 11:02:00 |
| Well done elleneva - it almost becomes like a hobby when it comes to saving money. Its fun to see how much you can save. Good luck. beagle12 - 2009-02-11 11:06:00 |
| im pleased for you elleneva i still reguarly do a complete bill stock at the start of the year and ring around the diff companies its amazing what you can save, and that all ends up in your pocket,so good for you kob - 2009-02-11 15:08:00 |

| the biggest money investment we have is our health and we dont ned heavy gym memberships to maintain it either a good brisk walk and a 2 cans of asparagus as weights do the same as half hour on treadmill with weights, use the couch seat and stand with your back to it and hands on seat do backward crunchies, lie on floor and do sit ups same as big machine you can use weights on your stomaqch if requiered, kids can hold your feet, and just think the gym meet would of cost 6-8 dollars plus a drink cause tap water is not the same would be $10 3 times a week and i just saved you $30 kob - 2009-02-12 07:07:00 |
| you busy walking around the supermarket at 5.15 thinking to yourself eveyones hungary at home what can I feed them quick.....instead of rushing out to kfc or some other T/A joint if you rally have nothing quick in the house like soagetti and a poached egg, or bird case noodles or something you have premade and froaen for nights like this ( prefrably this will get covered dont worry) kob - 2009-02-12 07:15:00 |
| cont etc or these just wont do grag a cooked rotissary chicken $10 and a bag of lettuce greens sltho it has cost you $13 it is a darn site cheaper that spending $30 on some crap filled with msg that will play on your tummy all night long and will then only consume more toilet paper than your weekely budget has allowed you to buy LOL so plan ahead is my motto Mondays are my last day of the week and I am knakkered so I plan a meal for that night cause I cannot function so its there and whether it just needs reheating and serving or wheter its just homemade burgers I dont care but its ready to go and supper quick for all those that are walking through the door saying im starving whats for t kob - 2009-02-12 07:16:00 |
| people think of the things they cant do when moneys tight but with some inagination you ca do anything, ok we cant go to the movies this week cause we had to pay extra on the car bill what ever, PULL the curtains borrow a dvd( if you cant rent 1) make some popcorn (50c out of a bulk bin) and snuggle up on the sofa and enjoy .....you can have just as much fun at home as you can out and its cheaper... kob - 2009-02-12 07:24:00 |
| cont Cant afford the petrol to drive for a picnic, spread a blamket on the lawn and have a theme hawai 50, cowboys & indians and eveyone has to dress up and play along with then theme, we used to have a very wet lawn and it slopped downwards so we had a fun park picnic, the kids would go under the sprinkler, grag a grocery bag slide down the hill sitting on there bag then run back up and so it all over again, we would throw balls at them and if they got hit they had to sit out a roundthe see saw was the teeter totter and they each pair had 2 minutes to go as many times as they could without getting hit with balls the winner got to choose there iceblock first, swings highest swing got the biggest cookie( something that made them the champion) , great fun and a batch of scones and a h/m jar of jam was the picnic with a sachet of cordial.....imagination is the key you can even print off certificates or invitaions even to your themed picnic, thats it for me this morning ill check in again later on tonight kob - 2009-02-12 07:25:00 |
