Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

I look thru my George half crowns and found the edges have been rubbed (the sharpness has gone and the figure flat), so now are they worth $5 each?
I have a bag 6ds (sixpences) from George V to Queen Eliz, it weighs 250gm. What is the silver value?

Anything 1947 or later isn't silver, so you'd need to separate them out and weigh again.

yes I was meaning the 1965 and 1967 ballot sets, mintage 500, in the red and blue cases. The 1969 Cook set for example seems to come with a case, and the coins in cellophane, so I suspect it would be similar for the ballot sets? Anyone remember back to 1953, and how the coins were packaged then?

same as the 1967 & 1965 ballot sets loose coins.
1968-1969-1970 all came with plush blue cases and the coins were in cellophane sets, read your catalogue book or google is your friend

My 1965-1967 ballot sets the coins were in the original cases not in cellphone packing like you say, my mum had two sets and gave them to me when i turn 21 at the time.

yes but I'd imagine most people on receiving their new coin sets would remove the coins from any packaging they might be in and put them in the case. So that's not really overly convincing proof for me.

To my knowledge the 1967 ballot sets did not come in the case as there was a letter accompanying them advising you could mount the coins at your leisure. The value is in the case and ballot cards (the value of the complete set so to speak). Bonus dollars over CV if you have the ballot case, ballot card, registered mail packaging & treasury letter without foxing.

so the coins are basically worthless!

and as they are exactly the same coins as in the polished sets there is no way to be certain that the coins in your ballot set, if you purchased it second hand, are the actual original coins that came with the set!

here's something I have noticed, not sure if it is a known thing or not, but if you look at a 1935 proof florin on the kiwi side, it looks like a proof above the horizon line, but below it it seems to be a normal florin?

Is anybody taking a table at the Fairs at the 50th Anniversary of Decimal Conference and want to sub-contract half ? Or I guess easier if I just enrol as a delegate and get a table ? TIA Peter

I think the tables for the saturday are all booked. The delegates I think get an opportunity on the friday afternoon. I'm sure someone here can clarify.

The real question is where are they now

numismatist - 2017-06-06 18:36:00
8382

according to ngc est mintage of 20 for 1933 proofs!

NGC also reckon there are 1936 proofs about, but do not give any other details. Anyone seen a 1936 proof, maybe a florin?

dtpapa - 2017-06-07 08:45:00

these could be them again, slight increase in price.

That's genuinely scary. Is the market for rare items so depressed right now?

erm that was WAY BACK in 1994! I suspect it might fetch up to 10x that now, or maybe not. But even back then I agree it is an absolute bargain price!! and geez wouldn't it be great to own a beautiful 1933 proof set!

1/ you can ask trademe to ban you from the message boards.
2/ or some one has report him to trademe
3/ or hes taking a holiday for a while

i have been ban from the message boards twice and all your posts get remove by trademe [first one = one month 2nd one = three months]

do not panic folks I have returned! heheh.

And it seems all my posts have returned also, the folks at trademe obviously recognised how important they were!

Anyways, here are a couple of alleged 1937 proofs I got off ebay a few years back. They certainly look proof like to me, but who knows! According to the NGC the mintage for 1937 is 200, which is 10x the supposed 1933 mintage for proofs. Yet you don't see that many 1937 proofs around the place as you might expect, at least in my experience.
