Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

well it's been 3 months now since I ordered 2 bottles of MS70 coin brightener, and according to Canada post the estimated shipping time for surface mail to NZ is 2-3 months. So there are a few possibilities

1. it's still on its way?
2. they have got lost somewhere on the way?
3. they arrived and NZ customs have seized them, but I have not yet received notification of this, so this seems less likely?
4. the Canadian customs confiscated them before they even left, although in that case I'd have expected the seller to inform me of this?

can't think of any other scenarios?

at least I didn't order the couple dozen bottles I first considered, with the intention of then selling any spares off on trademe!

Coin brighter ms70 might be a custom coin collector who did not let it in.

tee-hee, but actually if you do a search through the various coin forums you will find many high end collectors with good things to say about the product. It should be stated that it really is to be used only on uncirc, or nearly so coins, and proofs. It is especially good at improving cloudy proof coins. It is good for unc coins that have been badly stored, have grime, pvc damage, sticky tape, or virdigris growing on them. In some cases a coin needs to be treated for preserving purposes and to prevent further damage.

What is it with replica coins? Are we all now allowed to make our own counterfeit money without fear of prosecution? My understanding was that as long as a coin/note was still legal tender it was illegal to copy. I have lost interest in coin collecting now as I am no longer sure I'm getting the real thing.

Agreed, it can kill it for all of us. There are some fields I just won't touch now. It would be a pity if you were to lose interest entirely, though. Being careful to buy only from reputable dealers when it comes to higher-end items should provide greater security.

Trademe do not care about anything that is not NZ or older that 10 years or something like that. Any Replica NZ coin will be removed but sometimes it is up to us to report it. If that does not work a quick email to the RBNZ gets it removed quick smart. I have tried to get the fake sovereigns removed as they state .999 fine gold when they are only plated so I believe it is miss leading

Good lesson to be learnt with graded coins this. Only buy items that have been photographed. All the Chinese fakes I have seen have been for coins that were not photographed by pcgs.

Hello, I have the task of selling some of my Aunties coins. She has an extensive collection but I know pretty much nothing about collecting or selling coins. I see there is a catalogue The 2017 John Bertrand(TM) ("Premier"). Is that the best or only catalogue for selling New Zealand coins?
Thanks in advance (also i'm sure this questions has already been asked and answered but 167 pages is a lot to search through)
Linda

If it is mainly New Zealand coins the John Bertrand catalgoue is the best option. Remember that the prices are just a guide and that coins may not
sell for those prices. World coins you can probably find enough information with a quick google search.

One thing to keep in mind is any NZ Silver looking coin between 1933 and 1946 is made of 50% silver so are often worth more than the others. Also have a good look for any varieties or error coins :-)

It does depend on how crazy you want to go looking for errors I guess some of us collect everything but others just look for the larger more interesting errors / varieties

Oh but prices are not listed that is just a bit to hard to work out for some things

Scarce rather than rare, I guess. They're listed in the John Bertrand catalogue at 50% over a "normal" type.

checked my letterbox and for a brief moment I was puzzled over the presence of a mystery parcel, then it clicked, I had all but given up on it so it was a genuine pleasant surprise when it dawned on me what it must be!! Is there anyone here from the wellington area that could tell me if my coins are worth anything? I have a ton of old coins that were given to me from my grandmothers friend years ago. Most are from england but I have some NZ ones too and others from I dont know were. Dates of them range from 1769 up. Im not a collector and dont even know what is what.

Have a load of coins I inherited years ago, just sitting in a box waiting for me to do something. Mostly NZ pre-decimal, some US / AU.

Is it worth me cleaning them or should I sell as is? In separate lots? Or by date? By denomination?

Any rarities I should look out for? These coins were my grandfathers and he wasn't a collector. Just a lot of bits left over from the transfer to new currency, I think.

probably don't want to clean them, just in case there are some rare/valuable ones, as this will devalue them. Cleaning is generally regarded as a big numismatic no-no (unless done properly by an expert !).

List them in lots by country. Have a look at listings on the coin pages to get some idea of the difference between good and bad photos. There's a bit of a knack to taking good photos of small items. Photos of both sides of the coins, please, here or when listing.

Can you give a date range by denomination/country?

It's a pretty wide open list of possible rarities. If you're granddad is 50 and he gave these to you last week, then they may not be very remarkable. On the other hand, if you are 95 and your granddad (presumably departed from this mortal coil) converted currency whilst going to fight in the First World War, there could be some gems. Are you talking coins from the last 40 years? Last 80 years? Last 100 years?

Mostly NZ - denominations are half crowns / florins / shillings / pennies / 3d ...dates from 1933 to 1964 - although I vaguely recall a 1908 coin. Will have to go back and look. will probably just list them in their denominations and see what happens.

Unless any look like they have just come from the bank yesterday it would be fine to sell them as a lot, with plenty of clear photos. Around $50 depending on years and silver content.

Hi, hoping you may be able to help. A good friend has just been given a massive bag of coins from his grandmother. Some of e boxed set coins (ie, NZ Commonwealth games), he has some old roman coins he's planning on keeping regardless of price as he loves history. But h also has a set of four Maudy ? Coins dated 1897. Can anyone give us a history of what maudy coins were, and value?
Also, best way to offload the dozens of boxed sets. He has no interest in them, other than a few odd ones (Hebrew-Jewish set and Leningrad), but he's fascinated by the historical ones.

a question for anyone here who received one of the original 65 or 67 ballot sets, so this would have been back in 1965 or 67, if you can remember that far back! What I would like to know is what was the packaging the original coins come in, as I assume they weren't just in the case at this time. I suspect the packaging was identical to the cellophane packaging the 1965 and 67 so called 'polished' sets come in?

My 1965-1967 ballot sets the coins were in the original cases not in cellphone packing like you say, my mum had two sets and gave them to me when i turn 21 at the time

My bad - sorry, off on a tangent there. Saw the two dates and didn't focus closely enough. I thought the ballot sets were released "loose" in the plush case, but assume they would have to have been cut out of the vacuum packaging in the first place in that case - presumably at Treasury?
