Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Yea with 10 stamped on it. I cant see how that could be possible to happen at the mint. The other one I was shown was at the Levin interclub meeting with similar fault but one side was flattened in the process. My opinion would be post mint damage

very interesting he wont take the coin out of its cardboard folder wonder why??

To many things dont add up for me personally on this one. The 10 is positioned almost perfectly as if you would place a 10 cent coin on top of a 20 cent and wanted the queens to align on both coins. You can also see some of the other 10 cent design to show this on the queens face. On the Reverse Pukaki side you see another imprint of a 10 cent coin that would be nicely lined up to the same as the other side but the coin has slipped down.

My opinion would be it has been pressed with something. The indent to the top left of the reverse would also suggest it has be compressed and this just happens to line up with the 10 on the obverse

Word to the wise: Last Wednesday at the main Westpac on Lambton Quay, the coin machine in the entry lobby (NOT inside the main lobby) was giving out reserve bank rolls of Type I 2014 20-cent pieces.

OMG Have you seen the bids on all the UNC Coins the trader is selling? I've got loads of these type UNC Dollars and Sets in stock, and I think most of the collectors on here have - perhaps we better start listing! Anyone going to the Nobles Auction in Sydney next week, and attending Tony's birthday? Hope to see a few Dealers and collectors there.

Not going to Nobles just doing the online bidding thing. Are you bidding on items all week Lois? Was not aware of anything for Tony until someone mentioned it today via email hope you have a good time. Wish him happy b/day from me :-)

Looking forward to catching up in July

LOL Yeah we better get the UNCs out I have a ton of those coins and been selling at between $4 to $10 altho lucky to sell even 20 in a year and I think it's great when the odd one goes, but if we got those prices we'd become very wealthy. Wonder if bidders think they are Proofs?. Re Nobles just noticed today that I miss the NZcoin sessions as I arrive late Wed altho interested in other items. I decided to treat myself seem I've had such a busy time with dad's Estate. So Tony's invite is great I hope to catchup with some of the Dealers n Collectors. Full on for me, I made some Cal stamps for dad recently to mark his long service as a Stamp Dealer officially 1952-2015(LOL mention first in the Coin Club!). He started dealing in numismatics from at least 1971. I also shifted my shop last week, great move. Jason look forward to seeing n hearing your talk at conference in July. Take care.

The seller is a support for a Hospice so some bidders may be using this to make a donation ?

The seller is the Christchurch based Nurse Maude Nursing charity who operate a number of charity shops in Christchurch and are a charity organisation looking after Hospice care and other people in need. its a great organisation and modern with their selling techniques on items given to them. Far better than other charity outfits who end up often letting their staff picks the eyes out of donated items thus bnefiting their helpers rather than the people they intend to help!

I know this is a little different but just what was on my desk this morning

No lights
Does not show the lustre
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/572978218.jpg

Direct Light Looks a little better but with camera at a 90 degree angle does not show the lustre very well
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/572980145.jpg

Direct Light with item on an angle
often used on trademe to show the lustre but can make photos blury on the edges depending the angle and settings
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/572980253.jpg

Axial Lighing
Preferred by most people taking coin photos as it works for proof and very reflective coins and does look more like the original. This requires a beam splitter (or thin glass) to reflect light directly on to the item and back to the camera. It helps to show detail as any part not reflecting the light back at 90 degress to the camera looks a little darker.
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/572978291.jpg

I should have probably increase the shutter speed a bit on the axial lighting photo to make it a bit darker as it is a bit to bright in some points but was quickly taking these this morning.

All the photos of coins on my website that I have taken are with a axial lighting setup to show more detail.

anyone at the noble like to give us some reports on what it is like to be there? The general ambience of the place, who else is there, how many, and are there many rich pricks present? Many sheilas, or it it mostly blokes? Are drinks and snacks available? Can you peruse the lots on auction day? And could someone tell the auctioneer to slow it down a bit, internet bidding is stressful enough as it is without him going at ballistic pace! ta

I don't know if they have the same guy as when I was last there four or five years ago, but he's slow compared to his predecessor. The earlier guy averaged 13 seconds a lot, I think, and after he retired they had to add an extra day to the auction schedule.

Yes I know - I was referring to the third-party catalogue references. The Lampard number used first-time round looked like an error, but still interesting to see the changes.

So I grabbed three rolls of 20-cent coins just out of curiosity. I found seven 2014s, two of which were Type I. There was also a 2015, the first I have found down here!

And one of the most worn. Is that a die clash to the left of the 3 in the denomination, or just a scratch?

Probably time for another bump ... and it appears it was just a scratch on the 1935 3d after all.

About 7 years ago I got one for $40. But it was really hammered (perhaps literally?). At the time I just wanted a cheap one to fill the gap. This one looks much better in comparison.

Many years ago I was asked if I wanted to buy an Australian 1930 penny, I said yes please, but when I saw it my offer was not accepted. He kept it. And the reason why? It had been used as a wedge in an axe (handle) and hardy recognisable, apart from the date. Well before that when Australia turned to Decimal currency, I went through millions of pennies looking for one - never found one. Had about 25 small shops that I visited every morning. Did get a lot of silver though so it was still worth it.

I saw the Maundy money being handed out. Do they make more than the 182 pieces she handed out? Is it made available for purchase each year, or does one have to obtain it from a recipient?

Error coin...?
Hoping people on this tread might be able to help.
I have just come across this coin and wondered if it is worth anything and if worth listing on Trademe.
I looked it up and it appears to be a clipped planchet.

Hi guys, I was wondering if the older members who know I have been a collector on here for a while, could give me a bit of advice on the collection i have that goes back to when I started as a kid. I looked at collection this arvo and thought there is a lot of stuff that I havent looked at for years. There is nothing flash in there, good collectable coins and other bits n pieces that maybe I should let go. There a plenty of treasures enough to keep and pass on to loved ones some time in the future. But its a lot of faffing round to sell here on trademe, at least if I had to photograph each coin or should I just sell them in lots, like 80 predecimal silver florins, 34-47 or just box it up and find a dealer? Your comments would be most appreciated, cheers

Hi wasgonna they have had the maundy tradition for many many monarchs in the uk, they hand out a certain amount each year in silver coinage 1,2,3 and 4d and more maundy pensioners collect the coins for each year of the monarch's reign. There are some good sites with more information on maundy money

I wish I could offer a practical suggestion but I'm in the same sort of boat myself - I've stopped buying in large accumulations because I don't get the time to process them, and individual listings just take up too much time. I've moved a lot of stuff on from my original collection in bulk lots of x coins from y country, despite the years it took to build them up in some cases.
