THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
8201

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

It must be quiet in the coin world when a whole lot of man-hugs and niceties are needed just to turn another page on the message board. Just sayin'.

Probably :-) Anything interesting been happening coin-wise at your end lately?

No, don't bother much now and not clever enough to spot fakes, etc. Might clean out the dregs that are left over one day but just can't get motivated.

Item number? These have been discussed before, but without checking the Royal Mint records it would be impossible to tell if they were just a 'packaging variety', i.e. the normal semi-proof 'polished set' presented in a limited edition case and card, or whether there really were ten full proofs made. Telling the two types apart by eye is not something I'd want to try.

No doubts about authenticity in that case. But the actual nature of the strike is still open :-)

info card looks identical to that in the ballot set.

I don't like the look of the new replacement for "Pay Now" that's going to come into force soon - it looks like TM will be able to dip into a seller's account to refund buyers in the event of a dispute. Looks like I'll be terminating my Pay Now account in a few days before it gets switched over.

Recipient's name is printed on the back. The RNSNZ has one of the 10 "full proof" sets but I don't have a photo of the card. The 1970 set (which the Society also has) has a separately printed card saying "one of ten" and "set no. __" (numbered by hand) at the bottom. They may not have been quite so organised in 1967, I'd have to check.

haha depends what you are looking for. I dont do this often so struggling to price stuff quickly would have like to get more errors ready to bring but will have those ready for Auckland in July hopefully.

Yea not happy with it either. Give us an option to turn it on and off for bank deposit payments and ping to ping so essentially an option to use as the paynow system then it would be ok but forcing all these options on sellers is unrealistic.

Here's the card from the 1967 VIP set in the RNSNZ collection:
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/565221830.jpg
Just like the Muldoon one, it isn't numbered, and wasn't even printed on the back in our case. They'd got their act together better by 1970:

thanks Martin!

so if we accept that the handwritten FULL PROOF on the back is true, then there were 10(?) produced in 1967. Have to say I'm still slightly suspicious, would need to see a ballot coin and alleged full proof side by side in real life to be convinced!

1970 seems legit I guess, although it doesn't mention it being full proofs anywhere on the card?

dtpapa - 2017-03-11 00:55:00
8227

The gift of the full proof set to the Society will be documented in its records from 1967 in any case, so I have no doubt that the card was just not thought through. The FULL PROOF on the back would most likely have been written by someone looking after the collection at the time. The provenance of the Muldoon set is at least printed on the back of the card.
We've already discussed the technical quality of the strike and the possibility, at least, that they're the same as the semi-proofs that were released in the vacuum packs. That won't be confirmed till someone can check the Mint report - and even then, it could be couched in vague wording so we'll never know.
Some time ago I posted pics of the $1 from the proof and polished sets and asked people to pick which was which. Most picked the opposite way round, from memory, though I accept the photos weren't ideal. In real life I would struggle to tell them apart.

the Muldoon set does seem to have interesting/unique toning, which could be a function of them being full proofs, although it might also be due to the case. As I've not owned a ballot set I can't say for sure, but I've not noticed this toning on the cellophane sets. Anyways, I won't be bidding on it at the noble auction!!

Yea with 10 stamped on it. I cant see how that could be possible to happen at the mint. The other one I was shown was at the Levin interclub meeting with similar fault but one side was flattened in the process. My opinion would be post mint damage

Only way the design would be backwards that I can think of on a coin would be if it was a type of brockage but then they would not know what year it was as it should have the same design on both sides.

Most likely a flipped photo so really need a photo of both sides
