THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
8101

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Likely. And not silver in the first place.

Hello I hope Trade Me doesn't mind me posting this, I received a phone call from a local Rotorua family about stolen War medals and coins [around New Years - burglars cut the power to house], so please keep a look out thanks. If you are offered these best to contact the Rotorua Police Station on Ph (07) 3480099 - please mention Bennett family. Below is reference to newspaper article. I have previously helped recover medals stolen in Whakatane 10years back, which were offered down Taranaki region, thankfully my email had been forwarded to an Antique Dealer who contacted Police and they were returned to a very relieved family. Hopefully the Trade Me community can assist in recovering these medals especially. I have contacted the Coin / Medal dealers throughout NZ already. Kind regards Lois

Refer story in local Rotorua paper, possibly in the NZ Herald as well :

http://www.nzherald.co.nz/rotorua-daily-post/news/article.cf
m?c_id=1503438&objectid=11776615

Medals are also pictured in the article. List of Medals are :

- Military Cross WWI
- 1914-15 Star WWI
- British War Medal WWI
- Victory Medal WWI
- Defence Medal WWII

WWI Medals should be engraved with Samuel John Bennett MC
Service number 55752

COINS STOLEN APPROXIMATELY 25 AT MOST, AND DESCRIPTION VERY VAGUE BUT I THINK THAT IF THE PERSON IS GOING TO ONSELL THESE THEY MAY HAVE COINS WITH THEM
Owner advised coins had been valued years ago, and appeared fairly common, mainly wartime, odd Roman coin, but what stood out sounds to be either a Cartwheel Penny or Twopence. She said her father enjoyed his small collection though so it was more sentimental value. Owner wasn't able to give a full listing, and is more concerned about the recovery of the Medals and her cat urn.

Will advise if recovered, thanks

Not seeing anything about nipples in the link provided - do tell more :-)

I didn't want to be too explicit, but if you study Hercules' chest (you'll need to look at zoomed in version using mouse) you can clearly see both his nipples, they point downwards, as seems to be usual for those who spend a lot of their time working out! While If you examine the maiden on his right, you will also notice their presences (they are larger in this instance). Of course I could be imagining all this, so would very much appreciate it if someone would confirm all I have said!

coin could be vandalized I suppose? damage between R and A in Francs on other side.

Looks like it will be excellent - the organising team is putting a lot of preparation into it, with some great speakers etc. as well as the "coin fair" part. (I'm not involved in the process so I can say that safely :-) )

here's a question for paypal users.

I was purchasing some MS70 coin brightener from a Canadian website, as they offered surface mail, and I thought that might be a way to get it safely into NZ.

As they offered paypal as a payment method I selected that. It took me to the paypal login and I entered my password, my email was already entered in for me, as often seems to be the case, but on clicking submit I realised it was an incorrect email. Yet it still seemed to work as it logged me in. To check things I backed up and corrected the email to match my paypal account, and again it logged in successfully. Anyone have possible explanation for what happened?

What year is that? I have some 19th century ones, but I'm not sure I have much in the way of the 20th century ones.

Assume it's the '65-'73 10 francs, or is it the later 50 francs? Curious if it's a variety per se or just a top-grade item before the highest points (excuse the reference) have started to wear.

Umm if it does not have a value on it then is it worth nothing? hehe sorry could not help myself

But if one was listed with weight and diameter (have seen some that were not NZ blanks but being sold as NZ) I would put a few bids on but I am not a big spender on blanks.

I have seen some dealers sell blanks between $30 and $50

Well, it *does* appear to be in quite good condition :-) I'm sure I have a few that he could have for half his starting price if he needs more stock.

Has TM taken away the option to ask the seller to relist? I was going to ask him to do that.

Yes, I enjoyed the comments, especially lester's, but I did not see anyone draw attention to the silly claims about the age.

I'll admit I didn't even do the arithmetic - it doesn't work out even using Hijri years. But since the rest of it was fantasy, the fantasy age was at least consistent.

I see someone has an excessively rare Truman cent listed (1258096641). They're very hard to distinguish from a regular Lincoln one, but I'm sure it can be done with patience.

Suspect hit rate will go up in this area now so will have to go fishing to see.
Thought you guys maybe interested in this?.

interesting it must be the other security company that I dont deal with much as I am still getting the narrow date mint rolls :-( Will have to make some calls on Monday see if any are still around

I might just try for a few more rolls of 20-cent pieces, just out of curiosity. I've mostly been focused on dollar coins, of which I've managed only four mint rolls out of dozens.

Or one of those dead white dudes.

Actually, the key to telling the difference is that Truman's left ear is pierced. Otherwise, it's a Lincoln.
