Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Yup, puts me off buying anything high-end any more, for sure. Even if fakes can still often be spotted by close examination and weighing, that won't always be the case.

and close on weight normally. I would rather have a photo of one than a fake one in my collection. They also have made fakes of the 1949 Crown why I have no idea but I should have an example of it soon to compare. I have sent a fake waitangi crown to the RNSNZ for members to look at and need to arrange to send copies to some other societies in NZ so they can show members at meetings so people do not get caught out

I still think it may be possible for these to be covered by the Reserve Banking Act although not legal tender predecimal coins are still redeemable at the reserve bank (from what I am told) but we dont do it as they are worth more to collectors (or melted). My interpretation of the act would mean these are still unacceptable reproductions as they are created to mislead and still redeemable. I am still looking into this but maybe I am just over hopeful that we can get these removed from sale in NZ.

oh and a new generation of Lord of the Rings & hobbit coin replicas have been created in China still waiting my copy for comparisons but they appear alot closer in detail to the real ones but the previous LOTR fakes have been getting removed by tademe for the last few years.

"nose" grease

When I first read this I was really hoping it was a brand name for some sort of grease product. But apparently, seems that is not the case!

I was boggling over that a little. The agricultural medal might be worth a few bob, but nothing else jumped out.

Very astute of you to pick it up.

If those two accounts are the same person [post #7594] .........see if you can spot whats wrong with this auction? #1108479144

Well i don't see anything wrong with that auction, except that for a group of 5, you should probably have achieved a higher price.

I don't think that in post #7594 dtpapa was suggesting that you had 2 accounts, just that you were getting some of your stock from nzinvert.

Personally, I don't care where you are getting them from, you are supplying some nice coins at a good price, and I shall continue to bid on many of your offerings. Yes, some of your coins have been cleaned, but so have some of the ones that I offer from time to time. Cleaning is not always under our control as often coins have been cleaned prior to our receiving them.

[lol] i,m not the seller [altho the trademe seller does have a user name simular to mine with both starting coin*****, i was going to bid until?

That is just not on

They are the same person buys items under nzin******* and then "sometimes" cleans but always relists under coinw**** within a week or 2. Recently has been purchasing items on Tuesdays and then relisting by Friday / Sat. I have no issue with buying and selling but bidding on auctions when you dont get the $$ you want is wrong.

Quite unusual - odd that the denomination in Urdu has been left visible. Some sort of protest? But then Queen Vic hasn't been effaced, so all very mysterious. The claimed catalogue value seems a little exaggerated, too.
Also interesting is the fact it was "sold" and then relisted - same seller/buyer as identified in a thread a little further up?

No - they were made at different mints so the error only occurs on circulation strikes.

Its a nice one and a bid more obvious than similar faults. I spoke to David Galt about the one I had a few years ago and he remembered finding them and searching through coins to get some but I can not seem to find any reference to any being sold or mentioned in publications. It was as nice to see a second one finally.

I think you can only search page by page (Ctrl-F and enter search text), then move on to the next page and repeat ...

Yes, I've not found a means other than what translateltd mentioned.

Do have a look at the first page of the thread if you have not already done so. I believe there and on the first few pages there's advice about taking photos.

Ouch someone will not be happy in a few days.

I purchased from both that traders accounts (mentioned previously in the forum) surprise surprise the return address and name on the back of the parcels from both accounts are the same so bidding on his own auctions was a bit of a no no.

2 different banks I agree but under the same name I suspect. He goes to great lengths to hide it using different names on trademe accounts and emails and did not put the return address on one item when I order from both accounts the first time around. Funny thing is trademe allows people to have more than one account (personal/business) but he was shill bidding on his own auctions to bump up the price

Has anyone here ever come across fake or replica 1940 Centennial Halfcrowns?

I recently bought a lot of 10 of them. I intended to use 2 to complete type sets, and figured I should be able to sell the rest individually. Some looked nice and in good condition, and a couple were nicely toned. Another couple were marked, and generally OK, but not perfect. However there was one that looked like it was artificially dirty, not just toned, and at first look I could not determine what its condition was. Something about it raised my suspicions. I decided to clean it along with one of the marked ones, and then when I examined it I found that it has been silver plated, and appears that it may have been cast rather than die pressed. It also has the remains of a lug on the rim.

All this suggests that it could have been a piece of jewelry rather than a coin.

maybe it was used in a piece of jewelry, at one time? Have you checked that Chinese website, just in case it is selling copies, lol?!
