704 | Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions. No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again chefman1 - 2012-11-17 23:10:00 |

I was lurking! I was looking at an Ottoman coin and scratching my head trying to work out if it was a 10 or 20 kurush. I could see it was a 1327/9 AH (1917AD) but couldn't work out the denomination. Any ideas, Chefman or Oldecurb or any other lurkers? Edited by chrisr5 at 11:18 pm, Sat 17 Nov chrisr5 - 2012-11-17 23:17:00 |

To build on what oldecurb said, it would help to know if you plan to sell them or keep them and want to have some idea of how much to insure them for. Consider the difference between how much you insure your car for versus how much you could sell it for privately versus how much you'd get trading it in for a new/better used one. Each possibility means a different value. If you listed the countries, denominations and a range of dates for each that are in the collection, we could offer some very general ideas of possible value, including some things like raw silver value. If you posted pix here of a few, we could give you a more precise idea of book value (insurance replacement) or help you search for auctions to see how much the same item sold (or failed to sell) for. echoriath - 2012-11-18 13:27:00 |

So how do you work out the denomination for Kurush/Piastres? At least the Egyptian coins have it on them but can't see it on that coin. Way I can see is that some of the curly writing on the reverse might be more open on the 20 than the 10. It's a shame because the 10 Kurush in 1917AD (AH1327/9) was a key year and worth a bit as there were only 299,000 minted. The 20 kurush wasn't so uncommon. chrisr5 - 2012-11-18 18:38:00 |

Cheers Lester, I suspect you are correct, I just thought it wasn't quite a tight enough fit if the flip had a 38mm window, but I think you're right. I just wondered if you know how to read them! chrisr5 - 2012-11-18 20:03:00 |

15-S is a pretty good score. It's easier to assess a wheat cent from the reverse than from the front, but it looks something like F or VF. If the lines are all clear on the upper part of the wheat stalks, the next step is the heads of the wheat seeds. As for value and rarity, for the most part good early 20th century US copper just does not realise its potential on TM. Of course, there's always that waiting game aspect if it's something with a decent book value - you might just have to wait for the right buyer. I was pleased to land a nice little 11-S from a box of assorted world cents here in Dunners. Picked it up for 50 cents a few years ago. echoriath - 2012-11-18 22:46:00 |

1. Did you mean the one that had hit reserve or the one that had no bids? I saw the 2005 half sovereign up recently for $300 odd which seems reasonable if you want it for being a one year coin. But if someone wants to buy then....... 2. From observed experience it sometimes means what it says and sometimes appears to be a trick to give the appearance of a bargain! What did P.T.Barnum apparently say? 3. Authentic replicas - I know the exact set before looking! Weren't they produced by reader's digest? Also when searching saw a replica naval cannon with an anchor on the side. I can't imagine naval cannons having anchors decorative or otherwise on their side! ETA - I guess having a set of those coins would be a good idea as reference for the inevitable splitting of the sets and attempts to palm off included coins as originals!
