| OK here's a question for you all??? My cat puked up cat biscuits on the beige carpet, and it's left an orange coloured stain. Any ideas that anyone would be able to suggest, as I don't to start applying all types of things that may not work. Help appreciated. Thanx ;) zambesi2 - 2008-08-24 20:13:00 |

| who said anything about giving away they reduce them, so it makes it attractive enough to purchase, eg a pizza 1 day from date reduced 70 % cheeses only $1 who would turn there noses up at that, kob - 2008-08-29 06:55:00 |

| Ive gone through the thread but can't find how to clean LCD screens (PC, TV etc). Have looked at the electronic shops and its over $40, does anyone have a tried and tested method for getting those grubby finger marks off? Thanks mousetrapp - 2008-09-02 18:48:00 |
| mousetrap.. me, I make up a spray bottle with half and half meth spirits (the purple one) and water and that's what I clean my windows, mirrors, stainless steel bench top, SS toaster, SS jug and TV and PC screens Really cheap and versatile :o) jenna68 - 2008-09-02 19:31:00 |

| Kob - frontloader question Could you please tell me how much home made laundry liquid I would use in my frontloader washing machine please? would I need to make up so much of the mixture seen as you don't need to use so much detergent in a frontloader. sonshine - 2008-09-05 18:15:00 |
| Another one from me..... Instead of a weekly grocery shop I try to eek it out a day or 2 each time, that way every now and again I get a week when I don't have to buy groceries and that weeks money can be used for other things. I shopped on Monday this week so am aiming to go wednesday next week, prob Friday the next, then the time it will be not the next Monday but the Monday of the following week and I will not have for a week week... make sense?? Also I always make sure that I use a shopping list and have spares of all the basics, then I put it on the list when the spare is used that way I am never running out of anything and once you build up the stock its the same as waiting till you run out. With all that said or done I am at the fruit and vege shop twice a week, we go through so much of it... better than chips & Ice cream I guess! toadfish - 2008-09-06 06:29:00 |
| oopss sorry then the NEXT time it will be not the next Monday but the Monday of the following week and I will not have SHOPPED for a week... toadfish - 2008-09-06 06:30:00 |

| continued Kob I made up the 2 Litre of washing liquid yesterday , Must say I was very skeptical. But was delighted with the result.I found the best way to make it up is to dissolve the lux flakes in a mixing bowl. I added 1 Litre of boiling water to it and stired it well and it took awhile for Lux to liquify. But stired it on and off.. I finally put into a 2 Litre container and topped up to 3/4 fill the bottle with boiling water bea2 - 2008-09-06 22:35:00 |
| thanks bea its my pleaseure and I always leave a gapp at the top of my bottle so that for 2 days after i make it I can turn the bottle upside down a coiuple of time that way it gives it a good stirring and becomes more conditioner type otherwise it can go gloggy kob - 2008-09-07 08:13:00 |
| Washing Liquid Kob just another thing I do is run cold water in the machine but put my liquid into a bucket with hot water, swish it round, then add to the machine. makes it so easy. bea2 - 2008-09-07 13:00:00 |
| Homemade toothpaste Anybody contemplating making this for their children should be aware there is no fluoride in the recipe. I know people do have different views on fluoride but they should at least be aware of the point. gerbil - 2008-09-07 14:17:00 |

| Far out~! What an amazing thread~! My great-grandmother lived with us when I was a kids (after Dad died) and she taught us to be frugal and never waste anything. Any leftovers are transformed into soups or casseroles or pies - or if in a small amount I freeze leftovers for snacks or lunches. Stale bread is made into bread'n'butter pudding. Even small amounts of leftover roast meats are curried or a homemade gravy made out of the leftover juices and put into a pie. Banana skins used to polish leather school shoes. Baking soda used to whiten your teeth. You'd never ever consider throwing out the toothpaste or shampoo or ANYthing actually until you'd squeezed the life out of the tube/container to get every last drop. Only buy seasonal veges and freeze stuff for later use. Make your own jam and sauces (way more yum than the bough stuff). Go op-shopping. Also we were taught that not only were hand-me-down clothes great but to swap clothes with friends to keep costs down - something my friends and I still do. darlingmole - 2008-09-08 15:45:00 |
| continued ~ the best thing I was taught by my lovely mother was valuing what you have in the first place: if you have a roof over your head - be it rented or owned; food on the table - whether gourmet of simpley made with love; the love of good friends and family ... then you are truely rich indeed darlingmole - 2008-09-08 15:47:00 |
| You guys are the best We are finding it tight these days. All these ideas are going to help big time. Especially when when we got 3 adults and 3 kids with big appetites to feed. maggiemay33 - 2008-09-08 16:45:00 |
| Hi Bea I as yet havent come across a recipe for whites that i have tried and tested I just use napisan product thats suits me I havent tried adding itt to the soap powder mix either as I just soak my whites in a bucket of napisan and that brings them up like new., But a few other posters have said that that works good enough I will even tually try it I guess kob - 2008-09-08 19:06:00 |
| thanks darlingmole for the kind words about the thread it diffinately is a needed thread people are struggling at the mo and with mums been forced out to work theres no one home to teach our kids how things are done and this is the generation we are in now people just havent been taught how to make jams chutneys etc, or bake or even save for that rainy day, so its threads like this that just may show people how it can be done kob - 2008-09-08 19:08:00 |
| No worries Kob - this is a BRILLIANT thread! and largely thanks to you. Timetable has very valuable input as do many others. Yep - we've all had hard times, and some still endure through the hard times. I've been unfortunate enough to raise 4 kids on my own after marriage break up but fortunate enough to have the skills to survive. Then lucky enough to have had 2 momre kids (lucky?! blessed definately) and yes, times are tough because of the sheer number of us. But everythin is "do-able". Everyone keep the faith! It can, and indeed WILL, be done! :-) darlingmole - 2008-09-08 19:13:00 |
| Bea, I was talking to someone a few months ago and she makes up 10 litres at a time of the washing mix. To the 10 litres she adds 1 c of napisan. She hasn't had a problem with whites going grey. So I decided I would try it. I make 2 litres at a time, so what I do is mix in 1 teaspoon napisan (the cheap Pams version) with every wash I do. Have been doing this for a few months and my whites are still white. cautis - 2008-09-08 19:49:00 |

| home=made rice rissotto fry onions, garlic and 1 & 1/2 C raw rice in some oil ... add 2 crumbled chicken oxo cubs. Pour 4 or 5 cups of boiling water - bring ot boil, then simmer. Stir frequently. Add chopped up bacon/cauli/cabbage and salt whilest cooking ... it's cheap and nutritious and really fills you up (and I should know as I've got 10 of 8 of us to feed) darlingmole - 2008-09-10 21:00:00 |
| meat balls Save elderly/stale bread in the freezer. For meatballs, use 2/3 mince, 1/3 breadcrumbs (by volume) with a little milk to moisten the breadcrumbs. Mix well. If you want to stretch it even further you can use TVP mince, soaked and mixed in. Add finely chopped onions, garlic and herbs, salt and pepper and a little pimento (allspice). Shape into balls, brown in olive oil and put in casserole. Cover with chopped tomatoes (I use the pesto tomatoes bought on special, or fresh, chopped with fresh herbs - basil, thyme). Serve with Spaghetti or other pasta and salad. Did this the other night when I had 400gm mince and an unexpected influx of 6 hungry teenagers - the hollow-legged variety. ro42 - 2008-09-11 13:17:00 |
| save milk that's started to turn and use it for baking - it's better than fresh! Can be frozen and thawed when needed. ro42 - 2008-09-11 13:20:00 |
| Septic tanks Don't buy the expensive additives if you're starting to get a few smells which show the tank's system isn't working properly. Milk/cream that's gone off (leave it in a sunny windowsill for a few days) is excellent flushed down the loo to revitalise the tank. And if more's needed, try a couple of handfuls of compost flushed down. ro42 - 2008-09-11 13:23:00 |

| Kiwifruit tenderiser? hello I read somewhere about how kiwifruit can help tenderise the cheaper cuts of meat and they end up tasting just as tender as the more expensive cuts. Does anyone know the basis of this and what cuts of meats it works on best? wetwillie1 - 2008-09-18 17:34:00 |
| hi wet willie yes I do!!!!! if you but say rump steak, just peel and finely slice a couple of kiwifruit and thinly slice, then make a steak sandwich with the KF (no bread of course)and then gladwrap and put in the fridge the kiwifruit tenderise the steak to the point that it becomes like a fillet steak......But if you have a detective family who looks for things make sure you fry the steak with the kiwifruit indents down as you can see where it has been sitting JUST a warning my lot told me my steak had the big measles.... kob - 2008-09-19 06:57:00 |
| Kiwifruit tenderiser - I mash up a kiwifruit with a little minced garlic and a dash of soy sauce & a couple teaspoons honey & marinate steak that I suspect may not be so tender - it works really well. Trick is not to leave it in the kiwifruit marinade too long - overnight can reduce the meat to a mushy texture. I find a couple of hours is enough. As Kob says above plain kiwifruit works fine & you don't have the extra flavour of soy sauce & garlic. Great for barbecue steak. patsprat - 2008-09-19 17:02:00 |
| A question for those who have used the laundry liquid. I have been using it for several weeks now and am still on my original soap flakes and washing soda, so very economical stuff. I put some lavendar essential oils in it for fragrance, and today have put tea tree oil in for something different. I am finding though that this mixture doesn't get the stinky armpits smell out of my son's shirts, and sometimes does not quite clean knickers. I have tried warm water and cold, and even tried halving the amount of clothes in the was, to no avail. There must have been something else in the normal stuff that fixed these problems (nasty chemicals I am sure!) Any suggestions? Otherwise there are no problems. eigna - 2008-09-19 22:46:00 |

| Kob or little flick How much of your laundry solution does one use in the machine? lulu239 - 2008-09-21 08:52:00 |
| quantity to use I use 1+1/2 cup per full load, but I put 1.1/2 cups in a bucket half fill that with very hot water to mix it well before adding to machine. bea2 - 2008-09-21 10:35:00 |
| round about 1 cup full but sometimes i do add more just depending on the mix and how dirty clothing is. I actually ran out of washing soda last time i made it up and only put about 1/4 the quantity in each bottle and it still appears to be ok the smell is abit different but ok in the washing sense kob - 2008-09-21 17:09:00 |
| I only use a quarter cup in my wash. cautis - 2008-09-21 20:18:00 |
| I have a monster 8kg washing machine so for a full load I use i and a half cups - for a half load I use one cup. I have a 16yr old son who gets very smelly and have always found his clothes are lovely and fresh after washing - no leftover smells even in the armpit area. I dissolve the washing liquid in warm water before adding to the wash (which is a warm/cold wash - just off cold but barely!). I also add eculyptus oil to the misxture as it kills germs. cnrstone - 2008-09-22 16:11:00 |
