Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

A guy on that pawn star program thought he had the holy grail, an 1894 barber dime minted in SF. Wanted 400 thousand for it.

Turned out to be fake.

Got nothing, poor guy!

Nope. 53-55 are all strapless, 56's are all with-strap, and you get both varieties in 1957.

old Queenie was quite the saucy minx back then in 53-55!!

hey Martin,
1. do you still have that 1944 florin?

Yes, and Schön. It's more convenient to carry, and I have a little more faith in its compilation process. Reading German helps a little, too :-)

Sad to see someone selling nice banknotes that have been "Professionally Laminated". The laminate plastic will slowly ruin the notes as the chemicals leach from one to the other. You can already see slight staining around some of the serial numbers.

Yes, I suppose lamination of notes is in many ways akin to coins taped to a piece of cardboard: cringe-worthy. And yet the owners so often think they are "preserving" them. Had a mate down here show me an old map of NZ, possibly looking to see if I was interested in buying it. The main selling point was that it was well protected against future harm, you know, because of the lamination.

On a side note, I'll be curious to see if the local auction house stops putting customer ID/lot number stickers straight onto coins, per my advice to kindly STOP! They are normally in some kind of container anyway, so maybe just put the stickers on that?

I found a nice, large 19th-century medal a while ago that had "2/6" written on a plain part of the field in India ink. At least they've stopped doing that ... I hope.

An assortment of mostly modern US cents (face value under U$10) selling for over $130? What am I missing?

I'm missing being there at the right time to sell mine :-) I don't think my last bulk lot went for much more than face.

Wow maybe I should find the boxes of US cent rolls I had forgotten about for the past 5 or more years but knowing my luck I would get face value for them lol

I have a NZ 2 cent coin approx. 30 years old (the yung Elizabeth). It was found almost new but was put away and recently re-found. The issue is that this coin has no date on it. This is not a Bahama Mule. I have photographed this in close up and with another coin of the same era as a comparison and it certainly has no date and as far as I can tell never has. Anyone got info on this coin please?

Any chance of posting the photo here, please? Just upload to My Photos, then get the full photo on the screen and cut and paste the address in here.

Hi. I was wondering if anyone here can help me. I have a NZ silver 2 cent coin dated 1974 but haven't found any info on the net about it... only seem to be bronze ones about. Could it be from a set of some sort? Is it worth anything? Many thanks! Dan

There were no NZ silver 2c coins in 1974 (Western Samoa, yes) so it's most likely a school science project. Accurate digital weight should be a guide, as silver should be heavier than galvanised bronze.

I'm not sure if TM has changed its policy on non-resident members, as I'm sure I saw a seller based in the UK not so long ago, with more than a few feedbacks. I didn't dig any further at the time, though.

Here's another - again, the weight will need to be checked if it was struck on a Canadian blank in error: http://www.trademe.co.nz/a.aspx?id=1031821123

Any digital scales in the kitchen as these often work ok. My wife hates it when i steal them and forget to put them back lol

The 1974 coins weren't made in Canada, however, so it wouldn't potentially be a Canadian blank in your case. There might have been other "white" blanks of a similar size that could have been used in error, though.

50/- is only £2/10/-, but plausible. Could still be a bit on the heavy side for a roll though.

10 would be a pound's worth (20 shillings), and would give a total weight of 113 grams for the coins; 25 would weigh 282 grams.

So maybe the roll was 2 Pound. Makes the average value per coin at auction pretty reasonable ?

I have 6 threepenny pieces that my MIL had kept from wayback. Is there any value in them.
1921 Great Britain , 1960 NZ , 1918 Aust, 1941 NZ ,1935 NZ ,1919 Aust.
All are in fairly ave condition, the 1918 ,1919 Aussie ones have seen better days.

1935 NZ is a rare coin. Prices go from around $200 to more than $2000 depending on condition. I bought one last night for $221 that looks like slightly better than average in the photos.

That's interesting, wow! I thought the older coins would have been worth more:) Thanks for the info.
