Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Thanks, Lois - it was good to be able to watch the service from here in UH, and so pleased Peter and John were there in person.
Kind of disconcerting in a way, though - I saw you look up toward the camera right at the end and nearly waved before I remembered the camera was just one-way :-)

Glad you gave donaldo a proper send-off. I've raised a glass to him.

Here's a nice piece I got a few weeks ago:

Ok, It's pretty stuffed from a general wear POV, but it fills a glaring gap in my collection. And the price was right. There's some funny extra bits about the second "8" running to the rim.

I wonder how most vending machines are finding the new notes, I suspect a few will need a tweak.

Hi again all. First and most importantly, what a huge loss we have suffered. Condolences to the family. I never met Don in person, but had plenty of dealings with him on line. He will be sorely missed.

And to the copper coloured 20c coin. I got my example back in 2006. Curious about its authenticity I took it to the Reserve Bank for inspection. Through a microscope Don Oliver verified that he could see Nickel through the thin layer of Copper, consistent with the outer layer of Nickel being somehow missed out of the production process.

It seemed unlikely to me that only one such example would have made it out of the mint and into circulation if such an error had happened. And the error is so striking that it would surely be noticed by anyone that handled one. It would be interesting to track the other one down. The great rarity of a pretty vanilla 2006 issue?

I saw in the local paper that John Bertrand is [paying good money for old pre 1932 NZ bank notes.

Maybe time to dig around, the oldest one I have found is from the 80's. :-(

Latest Bertrand catalogue says $20, though not sure how many sales there have been recently to judge. That should be a guideline anyway.

There aren't any official grading services in NZ to my knowledge. Relying on third-party services is a slippery slope in my view - one of the best "do it yourself" guides for predecimal NZ coins is in RL Clarke's 1960s book "Coins of British Oceania" (there were several editions). Worth asking at your library to see if they can source a copy for you.

it's a good cleaning effort, but even given that, it ain't lustrous or red, that's for sure. So the description is BS.

Cripes, I just looked at what I paid for it - if it sells for reserve I'll be losing money after TM's fees come off. It's going up again at the next re-list.

And another but saved by the $1 reserve
"ANCIENT Roman Coin Antonius ? Seated Britannia ??? Listing #: 981289459
I am now reasonably SURE that it IS a Roman Coin PROBABLY the head of some guy called Antonius Ceaser
What seems really WEIRD to me ? (I am a sword collector NOT a numismaticist) is that it appears to have on the flip-side the figure of a seated Britannia ??? as seen on UK Penny 1500 years or-so newer than this coin likely is ??"

I assume dear old Tony is really Diocletian, as far as I can make out from the obverse legends, anyway.

Next time I dig it out I'll check it's not foreign matter or some other artefact affecting the image. May just keep it as a nice example of a scarce year.
