I'm looking forward to the Christchurch Fair and catching up with the locals after so may went down to the Dunedin Exhibition last weekend. No doubt we will all have something to talk about and discuss!

Dunedin Armistice Stamp Exhibition went well.

The stand holder dealers at the recent Dunedin stamp show reported some very good sales which surprised many but the venue was good and the stock being offered interesting. Lighting was good as were the other facilities. free admission and easy free car parking for all. Well done Dunedin.

Thanks Steve. It turned out to be a fantastic show. Many visitors from out-of-town, and from overseas, taking advantage of the opportunity to visit the show, and to see "The South". Many dealers were stunned by the sales, with some very big ticket items sold. I only decided to take a stand at the last minute, yet still had one of my best National shows - despite being a "local". Thanks to all those who came and supported it, particularly the Christchurch contingent.

Thank goodnesss the fair is in the morning 9am until 12 noon so keen folk can get home before it gets too hot and then sit watching the cricket on TV while having a cold drink and sorting stamps. What a great afternoon in store for all!

It is scheduled to be a hot day so nice to be inside the cool stamp club rooms. I'M sure we will have a good turn out. Gary has organised some nice signadge these days so we certainly get a few new different people coming through.

Hi all,

So my mother (used to work for NZ post) has left me a large collection of first day covers (including a few doubles and triples*) from 2000 onwards

I've been looking at the value of some of them but I'm unsure what I could realistically get for them.

For example I have a First day cover and Block of ten of the 2002 Children's Book Festival Stamps according to https://stampsnz.com/2002_childrens_book_festival.html

They are worth $18 each according to that site, but realistically would should I expect? $18 for both?

Another Example
Architectural heritage - Miniature Sheet Booklet
https://stampsnz.com/2002_architectural_heritage.html
Which says $31 but what should I realistically expect?

Thanks for any help

P.S I am mainly looking at selling the doubles but if it doesn't come to much might as well leave it.

*My guess is she was buying whatever didn't sell in the post office.

I find that there is too much that is single modern NZPO ones that I do not collect [I do understand these may be popular with many] and most of the older ones where the start price is a very hopeful one. Too many sellers do not understand how to show a good scan. Many bidders have so much time on their hands and continually bidding up by one step at a time - looking for the eternal bargain.

have you considered that it may be in what you're listing, pricing or looking at .. ?

A certain awareness of the market suggests that there are stamp sales happening -- maybe just not in what you're listing. Listings of 70's or 80's NZ issues may not be what the market seeks.. ;-)

Stamp Fair at Mandeville St in the Morning will go on despite the Tragic happenings in the Christchurch mosques, the main one which is only a few blocks away from our Stamp Club rooms.Lets not let something as bad as this affect our lives. no doubt the tragedy will be a sad topic of conversation to share with one and another. My business in the Christchurch CBD was basically in lockdown today with dozens of Police cars and ambulances speeding past in both directions. A sad day to remember.

Best of the lot is Bob Odenweller’s marvellous book on the Chalons. That contains very accurate colour reproductions of the shades. This is the main work he put out, rather than the abbreviated guide he also published. Also useful are the very early SG and other guides that used imitation stamps to show the shades.

Rumour has it that a copy of Bob's book might be put up on Trademe within the next week or so. Watch out for it. Occasionally you see the charts on T/me, under "other", but they are not quite as good as the book.

With shades, catalogue listings aren't as definite as one might think. So, the 1d Admiral (for example) comes out, and it gets called "carmine". A deeper variant turns up, so it gets called "deep carmine" because it's darker than the original. BUT it might not be the same as a "deep carmine" in a 1d Dominion. So, the generic colour guides are useful, but not as definite as the actual stamps. Have fun! AND, your eyes often change colour perception as you get older......

A great opportunity to add some treasures to your collection and fill in some of those annoying gaps. I'll take along some nice Pacific Islands and how about some Malta or Gibraltar? I will make sure I have some stockbooks of these along.

I hear one of the sellers is bringing along a table full of empty second hand Stamp Stockbooks and stamp albums and will be offering them at cheap prices this Saturday. Some with new pages. No doubt his stand will be very popular as buying such things at second hand rather than new prices can save heaps of dollars. I'll also be there with a great range of stamps including some fascinating German collections.

This last week has been a busy one for Christchurch stamp dealers and in particular for myself with heaps of regulars turning up both buying and selling. The cold weather certainly encourages people to get their inside hobbies out and there is nothing better than stamp collecting. I expect we will have a good turn out at Mandeville Street for the Stamp Fair.
