:

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again

how about that it got a little out of hand after it was shared by someone on social media on Tuesday and then wents nuts today.

Apparently NZherald struggles for articles lol Saying that they got so much wrong in the first 2 or 3 attempts at the article. First they thought it was for 1 note and they claimed they do not get released until next Monday it was a shambles.

Love the answer to the question on postage especially! Well done Mudeki. And well done for keeping it positive with all the snarky questions and daft ones! !

It has kept me busy today and I see trademe have removed a number of the questions I had answered as some comments were a bit over the top.

Tempted to suggest that the Num. Soc. of Auckland invite the Herald journo to a meeting to learn a little about what makes collectors tick - and why perfectly preserved notes command a premium, no matter how small. The mocking tone of the article shows he has no notion of either.

so these new notes, once circulated, just one set of hands, would just be worth face value?

It depends whether that first set of hands is super-careful in looking after them or not - no folds, flicks, bends or greasy finger marks :-)

A Translateltd said, I would also add that you get bonus points for consecutively numbered notes.

Check out the other auctions by Mudeki, he has a run of 10 consecutively numbered new $10! He also has some older $10 notes uncirculated with the same serial numbers but different prefixes. That takes dedication!

To build on the broader "what makes these more valuable" point you are explicating, one could reasonably ask why collectors of cars care if a vehicle has all factory-original parts. If it runs, who cares about the parts making it happen. But some people do.

If you mean the plastic sheets with pockets of different sizes, I used to get them from John Eccles in Wellington - I expect he still sells them.

" Price Gouging ..... a pejorative term referring to when a seller spikes the prices of goods, services or commodities to a level much higher than is considered reasonable or fair, and is considered exploitative, potentially to an unethical extent " ...... have you got the balls to back up that up with links to some of the auctions in question. I bet those traders would love a right of reply

you're very prickly, mate, if you don't mind me saying. I won't be posting links, but it's obvious enough that it's happening. I've no problem with it, at least the buyer knows what they are getting. My issue is with items that are not as described, such as barely AU coins called UNC!!! But I think we have already that discussion!!!

Didn't think you would , and if you've no problem with it then why post and accuse them of price gouging
You've never discussed issues with me about items that are not as described, such as barely AU coins called UNC. We have only exchanged views on sellers and buyers expectations

That was you at #6969 and #6976 having a go on the price achieved from a buy on Ebay and the onsell on Trademe. The ongoing discussion had nothing to do on the condition of the coin at all , it was all about what you thought it should be worth.

pottynz - 2015-10-19 14:59:00
7025

the worth of coin depends on its condition!

haha , no it's worth how ever much someone is prepared to pay , preferably two people at the same time , then things get interesting

pottynz - 2015-10-19 15:51:00
7027

only if the person prepared to pay is able to make an informed decision, and the item in question is described honestly, and accurately.

Some of the earlier proof sets are prone to toning on the bronze coins in particular - if the bronzes (or other denominations) are no longer in their original bright state, the set is priced as "average"; if they're all "as struck", with no marks or discolouration, then the "superior" rating applies. That's my understanding, anyway.

While I've not seen formal distinctions/gradations for US proof sets in books, I have seen a US proof set whose penny was absolutely stuffed with vergidris. This was at a local auction house, and the munted proof set and another went as one lot for a ridiculous sum, even if there had been no issues. This speaks to that notion that things are worth what someone will pay.

Further to issues with the coins themselves, the presence or absence of original packaging and its condition, as well as the condition of the plastic box in which the coins are stored, can also affect the value of the set for many collectors.

This all applies the same to mint sets, which are different again to proof sets.

I have one that's good for showing up tiny detail. It will only take pics in b/w but if you just want to magnify on-screen that shouldn't be an issue. I'll dig it out and give you the details - probably in a day or two though.

Just a hunch, but I reckon they're well aware. Whether the case has legs will be another question. If so, I suspect it will collapse ebay or they will figure out a way to drag the case out for years.

I have to wonder if they would care that we know. To be fair to TM, though, the efforts of you and others to have a proper space for replicas at least gives transparency since fakes are an inevitability.
