| hi guitarman nah just used straight washing soda.... and put in enough to fill up the powder holder.. (just under 1/4 of a cup)as a rinse aid you can use white vinegar.....i couldnt find the washing soda at the supermarket but its at bininn for $2.69 (i think) a kg....I 3/4s filled a 2ltr icecream container....2 wks ago...and doing a load 1 or 2 times a day...its lasting for ages bigeyez - 2008-08-01 14:22:00 |
| my 649 post was spose to say i use the liquid + 1/2 scoop of baking soda...cos apparently that is the active ingredients in napisan...and brings up the whites ok bigeyez - 2008-08-01 14:23:00 |
| thanx bigeyez I will go to bin inn next week and get sum and try it guitarman525 - 2008-08-01 23:24:00 |

| i just saw the washing soda at the supermarket today and it had what other uses it could be uses for and it said for the dishwasher to use a spoon full....i had been using about 1/4 cup so just tried a heaped dessertpoon and the dishes are still clean as....so works out even cheaper now i know not to use as much lol bigeyez - 2008-08-02 18:47:00 |
| oh and sunrise marg 99c at woolworths ends tomorrow i think bigeyez - 2008-08-02 18:47:00 |
| oh and other uses for washing soda are flowers: add a little soda in the water to make them last longer....household cleaning: you can add it to your cleaning solutions to extend its cleaning life and assist in cleaning of greasy of smoking ceilings.walls,floors..fridges- bigeyez - 2008-08-02 18:53:00 |
| for more info on use for lbath..cleaning silver an stainless steel...swimming and spa pool use...dyeing fabrics...automotive engine degreasing...concrete floor and path cleaning....horticultural uses...email greenwoods at callsouth.net.nz....100% biodegradable....says its safe for septic tanks in its diluted form bigeyez - 2008-08-02 18:55:00 |
| and I'm pretty sure that white vinegar can be uses for cleaning all of the above as well...the soda is to soften the water i think.....so if you didnt want to do the lux flakes thing....you could add it to your normal washing powder...to make that go further...and then would get a fabric softner and powder in 1 bigeyez - 2008-08-02 18:58:00 |

| sarah!!!...shaving cream mixture Place 1 cup Lux Soap flakes in a large heatproof basin. Add 1/2 cup boiling water and beat till the Lux flakes have dissolved. Add 1 dessertspoon of olive or almond oil, and if you want, a few drops of your favourite essential oil - lavender is good as it is soothing and gentle on your skin. Beat all well until very thick and creamy - about 5 minutes or so. Keep in screw top jars and use as needed. bigeyez - 2008-08-05 12:57:00 |
| Owner of Bin Inn Rangiora was on the radio in the weekend saying that the baking area of products had been swamped with people going back to baking their own. In our house family loves homebaking compared to the cardboard biscuits Griffins make julie28 - 2008-08-05 13:34:00 |

| Clothes Washing Hi I made up the washing powder recipe and to be honest I wasn't that impressed with it for removal of ordinary daily stains from my childs clothes (food etc), basicaly it didn't remove them... But I figure it will be fine for lightly soiled stuff like sheets and towels. Have others found this? 1489 - 2008-08-08 15:15:00 |

| 1489 its not for everyone and after using commercial washing powder for a long time it does take alot of getting used to BUT in saying that it cleans all the gum of my husbands wook clothes and get the cow s**t of my sons farm clothes fine so im not sure why you are having problems, the washing soda alone on the pkt says you can wash with just that if you suffer from allergies so maybe redo it and have another go, its not for whites tho i know that for sure kob - 2008-08-11 06:42:00 |
| When I wash my partners work clothes in the homemade liquid I always add washing soda to the wash as well and I give it a warm/hot wash malcovy - 2008-08-11 07:51:00 |
| yeah ... I love the idea of it and will definatly keep using it for lightly soiled things, I'm impressed it delt to your husband and sons messy clothes kob! Seems amazing when there is such a small amount of ingrediants used. My kid isn't as messy as that! Did you use a hot wash perhaps? For other eco friendly and cost saving I am also using white vinegar alot for cleaning, anything from the shower to rinse aid in the dishwasher, works really well. 1489 - 2008-08-11 10:46:00 |
| 1489 you could try adding 1/4 c baking soda per load...that helps to remove the dirt....or you could mix equal parts washing soda crystals and your normal washing powder....this would make it a cleaner and fabric softner in one...and make your powder last longer bigeyez - 2008-08-11 14:01:00 |
| i found my vinegar book too so will start antoher thread later tonight...when kids are sorted...got 1 home sick today bigeyez - 2008-08-11 14:02:00 |
| www.books.google.com A site where you can read thousands of book online. Called a preview site it has books online which you can read before you go out and guy them - just to make sure its what you want. Some have pages missing, and you can't download them but for a look through to get the major areas or ideas of the book its great. I searched for one person and it had 3000 books either written by him or mentioned his name in it so it is an extensive site. tumbleweeds2011 - 2008-08-11 14:19:00 |
| HI all! What a fantastic thread! I just wanted to let you all know (if it hasnt already been said!) that the homebrand Baked Beans are DELICIOUS! The spag isint so good (we stick to watties for that) but the baked beans are much better than the overly saucey Watties ones. Go on give em a try! clemo - 2008-08-11 16:54:00 |
| help me kob... i made 2 litres of washing solution using 3 tablespoons of washing soda and 2 taablespoons of lux flakes, it wont seem to dissolve, what am i doing wrong, i put in boiling water and have shaken, aare those the right amounts, its seems alot for 2 litres, please help me as i have run out of powder now. nadine10 - 2008-08-13 17:30:00 |

| Good idea bigeyez Can't be too much faffing around though or even with the best intentions it isn't goung to happen! No major soap allergys in this house thankfully so its more of a cost cutting and enviromental concern. 1489 - 2008-08-13 18:40:00 |
| Nadine10, for 2 litres of the washing liquid I use 10 mls lux flakes and 30 mls of washing soda. It works fine in that amount. cautis - 2008-08-13 19:19:00 |
| do you mean gms dont mean to sound dim. but how do you measure 10 mls of lux???? nadine10 - 2008-08-13 20:00:00 |
| I do mean mls lol. I hve a set of measuring spoons that are all worked out in mls. But the 10mls of lux looks about 2 teaspoons of lux and the 30 mls of washing soda looks like about 1 and a half or 2 Tablespoons washing soda if I compare them to my other measuring spoons. cautis - 2008-08-14 09:34:00 |
| i think it's 2 tablespoons of lux and 3 tablespoons of the soda. winnie15 - 2008-08-14 15:16:00 |

| We just got a box of filled rolls and sandwhiches from the bakery for $10. They were closing for the day and had boxes of things they hadn't sold. maggiemay33 - 2008-08-18 00:44:00 |
| good on you maggie for taking that oppurtunity i have worked in many a cafe and we used to have regulars on certain days that would come in and get the leftovers whether it being the hot pies, cream goods or sammies and rolls its good to see that the cafes are still doing that, when i left they were all starting to economize and re using as much stuf as they could, eg: the pies were kept and the next day the lid was taken off and mashed potato was piped around the top sprinkles with cheese and reheated (so dont buy dodgy potatot top pies), the meat was getting taken out of sammies and used for the scones the next day...or if it was possible the wouls save the sanwich and toast the next day and leave in the pie warmer at the busy times like morning tea & linch.....these were kob - 2008-08-18 06:23:00 |
| cont practises that saw me get out of the cafe work as I was alwasy taught fresh is best but if your not behind the scences how are you going to know, so beware.....so enjoy those leftovers at least you know thats a good cafe to go for morning tea or lunch as they are keeping fresh product each day. Im amazed that they charged for it as it would only go into rubbish or pig scraps eventually, but great for you, I used to frreze the plain meat sammies , toast the ham & tomato and add cheese, frreze the scones always good for when your having a stew, and the cakes cut smaller and stored away kob - 2008-08-18 06:24:00 |

| Wow!, I used the washing soda crystals for the dishwasher and I was so impressed, I thought I wouldn't be able to give up my Powerball, but it was one of the dearest things in our groceries. Thanks ladies! lissy73 - 2008-08-23 21:51:00 |
| I have been using several of these ideas for a few weeks now. The laundry liquid is great - I put some lavendar essential oil in it, but might get some eucalyptus and try that too. The other one I tried was lemon, which was nice. I found that my 15 year old son's shirts still smelt a bit under the armpits if I didn't put a fragrance in it. I have also tried the butter, which I have learnt next time not to put the whole oil and water in at the same time. Another thing - refill any liquid toilet bowl dispenser things with toilet duck from a bottle - much cheaper than buying special dispenser refills. And I have been doing lots of baking. Now to get to the gym to work it all off .... eigna - 2008-08-23 22:56:00 |
| And another thing I was a bit skeptical about something as simple as baking soda cleaning an oven, but I tried that last weekend, and it did the trick - I sprinkled it on as a powder and used it like scouring stuff. I then got an old spray and wipe bottle and filled it with a mixture of white vinegar and water, and sprayed this on when a bit extra was needed. The muck came off the racks easy too. Heaps nicer than that foul oven cleaner in a can. eigna - 2008-08-23 22:59:00 |
