Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again

M.S. "SOBIESKI" 1d New Zealand Currency as used aboard the troopship Z6 2NZEF on its way from Lyttetlon to Egypt in January 1940.

Does anybody know any other history of this provisional currency used by the NZ Troops. To see the item take a look at Listing #: 937505829
Are there any other values or ones from other vessels know?

If anyone did know it would be the person who purchased it. At least it has gone to a good home :-)

Benefit of the doubt - it may never have actually been in circulation, just hit with a hammer a few times and thrown in the fire.

Hi all,
I am listing a heap of my old tokens and early gold coin weights, Jetons etc such as the below and was wondering if Exonumia is the best catagory or for tokens like the one below should instead be under
Listings from bjubes > Antiques & collectables > Coins > New Zealand (Pre-decimal)
Token: 939279261
Weight: 940878468
Thanks in advance.

Hi all,
Is WW2 and before the most sutible category for old NZ Ration chits and WW2 troopship banknotes or is the NZ pre decimal more suitable? 941386144

My take is that Exonumia is the most appropriate for these, but there's always room for creativity if you think a different category would get better exposure. For the ration cards, you might even get some bites under "Art Deco & Retro", for example - period stuff to go with people's old cars and outfits.

Cheers, I shall give it a go with the retro suggestion.

Hi Donaldo,
Please advise which items are replicas? To my knowledge I dont sell any and would mention an item is a replica if I know an item is such. If you are referring to the patina series retrospective proofs these are not replica as a replica needs to replicate another coin. As these are new retrospective designs such as the New Zealand and Australian series coins and are collectable in there own right. I have sold many to overses collectors and they seem to be highly rated on ebay. I dont think they endanger coin collecting field. If anything the serve as a entry into the world of numismatics. Trademes stance is also that the patina series is not a replica. Please advise auction numbers all the same of any replicas
Thanks

Hi Donaldo,
A big happy birthday from me too! Hope your having a goodin.
Please confirm it is the Patina series you are referring to and not other items that you think are fake. I try very very hard to avoid fakes when sourcing stock or items for myself and would never knowingly sell a fake replica item as a genuine example. This Patina series of patterns are sold as retrospective proofs with no intention at all to deceive. If it is other coins I have listed and they are fake I will remove such coins. I completely agree that fake coins sold as genuine old coins is a real problem.
Kind regards
Ben

Exonumia still makes sense, though, since they're essentially fantasies rather than actual coins or tokens.

My thoughts exactly. As they do not replicate coins I do not think replicas is appropriate and the folk at trademe also stated there position after looking into them is that they are not replicas. I would like to hear from others there thoughts also.
Thanks

Something odd about the "20 Mark" piece here - Kaiser Bill's head looks a bit small for the flan, lettering looks oddly shaped ... and it should be nearer to sov size than a half: 942579284. Unless the lighting has a bit more of a distorting effect than usual.

I would welcome such a category but have not had any issues with people who have thought these are anything other than retrospective examples. The bulk of buyers have been collectors of the series a few medal collectors and dealers have bought them as they are well struck and have attractive designs. I feel the Exonumia category serves such items well. There is also unlikely to be any more. I have a very limited lot and am fast running out. Many of the designs I first had have sold out and I understand no more are been made.

Was surprised to find I had won this after placing a modest autobid.
Got home to find I had somehow managed to place a $1527-00 bid.
Think I had better head back to Fiji for some more R & R.

Hey guys, I know it all comes down to condition but can someone please tell me what the rough estimate on price would be for an 1862 Melbourne Victoria Robison Bros & Co 31 Flinders Street West is worth?

Thanks

Hi according to my book there are 6 varieties with all but 1 at R3 so I would guess $25 up ,with better condition worth more..

Ouch. I guess the buyer was to lazy to search for 1940 Pennies on trademe to see what else was for sale

Just averted a potential hiccup - an item I sold this morning re-listed automatically, which wasn't ideal as I had only one. I keep forgetting that if you create a "Product" from an existing listing, TM defaults the stock number to "unlimited", which I have to change manually each time. I found three more and fixed those before it happens again.

Where would one buy Plastic coin capsules? Would like to finally list some coins on trademe, so if I have to post them away to a winning bidder, I dont just want to put them in a envelope or nz post bag.

Anyone know where I buy plastic coin capsules?
