Question:

Are these things an effective watermark detector for stamps ?

Black Light Hand Held UV Lamp

If not - does anyone have I think it was called 'Signscope' Watermark detector they want to sell ?

These were / are made in Germany I think & there were battery & power (via an adapter) models made

Thanks

UV Lamp does not show the watermark in stamps ( The watermark in stamps is 99% in the paper used and produced before the actual stamp is printed onto the stamp (sheets) by compressing the watermark image making it thinner those a little more transparent.

The Signoscope I found works well on mint never hinged stamps but still has difficulty in detecting real difficult watermarks. Hinged mint or used with bad cancels obscure the watermark.

It helps to know beforehand what type of watermark you are looking for and the watermark fluid works best for me. That is if I can not see the Wmk outright.
Some difficult watermarks like Swaziland 1962/8 issue (viewed with a signoscope) are better identified against normal light or even slanted against light you could see the watermark depression.

Those that look for watermarks on stamp employ different methods which best suits them - no instrument is perfect bar an xray which obviously is not cost effective.

I always check my emails and replies before going o bed on the night before the fair as often people email me to bring along something to the fair. I actually had just finished loading up my car for the morning in case it get wet later in the morning. Luckily it didn't. At one stage I was serving (or at least had at my tables) 10 customers and had to transter a couple of regulars to the public or general tables in the middle of the room so we certainly had a good turnout on Saturday morning!

prob wouldn't be many other ordinary Airmail Letters to the USA of the day with a 10/- value on them

Sounds like the Postman did very well out of the deal .. ;-)

It does look that way - only guessing but Airmail cost would unlikely to be more than 1/- or 2/- in the day to USA

There is value in the 10/- as highest value of the set, but then uniqueness of seeing one on a standard airmail envelope going out is probably another thing & may make it quite collectable

I see you are from Christchurch, so checkout the post above yours about Stampfair tomorrow. Good chance to make contact with numerous dealers in one go. I am sure it would be good chance to get advice.

Should be a busy day after everybody has had Friday off to play with their stamps and work out that they have some gaps to fill.

I'll be sure to be there and I'm hoping to bring along a lot of nice items to entice people with.

See you on Saturday in Riccarton.

Some advice please. I'm not a stamp collector but I'm undecided as to whether I should bin these or not. Don't want to spend time trying to sell them if there's no real worth to them. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Not a great seller the £10 stamps but if you list with $1 reserve and I think you will get a result.

This was in General:

The US Postal Service created a stamp with a picture of President Trump
but the new stamp was not sticking to envelopes.

This enraged the President who demanded a full investigation.

After weeks of testing and $1.73 million in congressional spending, a special Presidential commission presented the following findings:

The stamp is in perfect order.

There is nothing wrong with the adhesive.

People are spitting on the wrong side.

What a joke. Except US Postal Service rules won't put a US president on a Postage Stamp until 5 years after their death and for ordinary people not until 10 years after their death.

Whoever made up that joke hasn't seen a US stamp for a long time as all of them are now self-adhesive so don't need licking at all.

I'll be there for sure. No doubt the wet weather will cancel a lot of outdoor sports and other activities so just ideal to go along to the warm stamp Centre in Mandeville Street with its underfloor heating and warm carpet.

yes, there is a lot of demand but it really depends on what you have. You don't give any idea of how much you have, is it mint or used, a single stamp album or 10 albums or just loose stamps. How old are they. you can easily tell by looking at them to see what king or queen is featured, are they in decimal currency or sterling currency etc. You can visit a local library and borrow or look at a stamp catalogue. If you were in Christchurch i could help more. Alternatively take some photos and offer your collection on trademe and see what happens. good luck!

Hi, mine lot has two book, appears to 1950 to 1980 and to my uninitiated eye has some real beauties probably over 50 pages. There are a few stamps featuring JF Kennedy and some of the first astronauts. These were donated to a historical society and I foolishly said I would deal with them. Do you ever do valuations if albums couriered down and return postage paid. thanks....

I haven't done that before but if you put in a courier bag to pay the return then I'm happy to do it for you. Now I'm not able to provide you with a postal address according to Trademe rules but a search around should easily find my email address so do that and I can perhaps help you out.

Great. I'm looking forward to he fair and I'll certainly be there. Philately is going well in Christchurch. Our local stamp Collectors club got 6 new paid up members this month perhaps largely because of our Knock down sale attracting many people who saw the sense of becoming a club member. We also had a good turnout at our Wednesday afternoon stamp club meeting and had to add another table to fit everybody in.

Had a great Stamp Club meeting this evening at the Philatelic Centre in Mandeville st in Christchurch with 40 members present including several visitors and members from out of town. The evening was mainly about Norfolk island with a great talk by Laurence Eagle backed up by displays of his Postcard collection of Norfolk Islands as well as displays of Norfolk Island Stamps, Booklets, FDC's and stamps from Shirley Bone and Paul Clark so we had 8 frames of displays. Also a award winning display of American Submarine covers plus some nice items of interest displays. Luckily for us our new driveway to our extra room car parks alongside the building have now been resealed and so we have easy access to the car parks there. Our stamp club meetings are probably the best attended of any in New Zealand. Perhaps the free supper and teas and coffees count! We also had 7 new club members join last month which was probably a club record.
