It should be a good day for stamp collecting with such cold weather and lucky for us the Philatelic Centre is always warm and very comfortable. if any collectors have special requests make sure you let your favourite dealers know so they can make sure they bring along the right things for you to hunt thru!

Sorry to interrupt thread, but I was wondering if you had the Shades Stamp Shop or the Gloucester Street one? Do you remember Arthur Oliver from many years ago?

I had Shades Stamp Shop which was in Shades Arcade for 31 years until the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes put an end to the CBD. Since then i have continued to trade under the same name but from first Bordesley Street in Phillipstown and for the past 2 months from a new location at 303 Bealey Avenue very close to the CBD. Yes I well remember Arthur Oliver. He operated the Stamp Parlour in Colombo Street just north of the town Hall. he was quite a character. Arthur died about 10 years ago.

Can anyone help?

Hi, best to talk to a dealer or visit the local library and take out Stanley gibbons world catalogues. Alternatively a lot of info is available online.
An auction house such as Mowbray collectables in Otaki could also be an option.

Hi Erica,

Yes, some dealers are prone to try and rip collectors off.but also some collectors do that. I had a young guy bring me in some stamps today to find out what they were worth. He had just paid $100 for them from a "collector" he knew and I had to give him the sad news that what he had purchased was worth around $5 at most. You need to deal with a reputable dealer so ask around people to find a dealer who has a good reputation. If you ask enough people somebody will know who to trust.

Thanks for that Steven, glad to know you are still able to continue your business. Arthur was my father and I remember coming into your shop in Shades as well as the shop that was in Gloucester St. Dad was certainly a 'character' I hope you have some fond memories of him :)

Yes, I have fond memories of your dad and always got on well with Arthur, often visiting him at home in Richmond or at his Real Estate Office in Colombo st as well as at the "Stamp Parlour" over the road from the Real Estate offices. I operated Shades stamp Shop for 31 years in Shades Arcade and during that time from 3 different locations in the arcade. firstly from upstairs opposite the Boatshed Bar where my shop number was 54. I then doubled the size of my shop there by taking over the clothing shop next door and knocking down the wall. For a while I even had another stamp shop alongside mine. Later on I moved downstairs to Shades Hereford where I took over premises previously used for a Bookshop. Peter Bargas operated his Goldfield Collectables next door to me. My shop number was then shop 10 108 Hereford Street. After negotiations, Tom Taylor Young (Previously Tom Upjohn) closed his Coin & Militaria shop in Worcester st and added his stock to mine in Shades Hereford. My final location in Shades Arcade was a large shop in the main part of the Arcade just behind Michael Hill Jewellers where I was Officially Shop 1, 112 Hereford Street which is where I was when the 2011 earthquakes closed the CBD and saw the Arcade finally demolished. Luckily I was able to eventually retrieve my stock. I'm now busier than ever especially in my latest premises which i find ideal.

Happy 2017 stamp people!

Any idea reason why this Lake Scenes 23c isn't green like it should be? Is it a known error, or some sort of changeling?

The 23c Lake Scene is a known colour error where the frame is the same colour as that of the 18c (yellow-olive) instead of the normal sage-green.
These are catalogued by Campbell Paterson at $1000 for an unhinged mint copy so are quite valuable.

Well that's very good start to the year! 2017 is going to be great!

Thanks for that. Haven't sold something at a proper auction for a while, so I guess now is my chance.

Depending on what they are you might get a dollar or three if you listed them on here.

I'd take them off your hands, but I wouldn't want you to hassle with postage etc.

Does the 1996 'Marlborough Sounds' error occur only on the blunt-perf booklet stamps - or does this error extend into the sharper perf self adhesives as well (I think these are from stamp rolls)

Almost of the copies we have seen are blunt perf booklet versions to date

The Error where the line of text is missing only occurs in the self-adhesive booklets on the bottom row in the middle. it happens in one in 10 booklets. it is never in the Rolls which came out in boxes and which as you say have slightly different shaped corners.

Okay - thanks - kiwisteven.

I have one of the sharp perf errors here - on lighter paper (as compared to the sharp perf on thicker paper)

there look to be a couple more of these sharp perf errors listed on here
currently

Were lighter paper - sharp perf also produced in the booklets ?

Were the thicker paper - sharp perf the Roll editions of these or did some lighter paper - sharp perf also make into Rolls ?

The Booklet versions I have always (perhaps incorrectly) associated with the blunt perf adhesives

Thanks

Surely you mean "Put a face to your favourite Trademe seller" rather than "a face on"? I don't want anybody putting a mask or any other type of a face on me!

I know some trademe sellers might be two faced but surely not your Stamp Fair tableholders?

Now for some advance notice.

The Timaru Philatelic Society has just announced that their next Stamp fair will be held on Saturday 25th of February in their usual venue of the Timaru Red Cross Hall rooms at 18 Bank Street in Central Timaru. Presumeably the hours will be something like 9am to 2pm.

Hi, I have a large quantity of stamps that were collected by my late mother. There are some first day covers and health stamps but mostly they are used and taken from old letters. They go back to the 1940's. Can somebody recommend a trustworthy, knowledgeable person in Canterbury who could go through them and tell me if there is anything of value please? Thank you.

You are welcome and encouraged to bring them into show me. I have been in full time business over 40 years and offer a free appraisal on anything philatelic. Sadly because of Trademe rules I can't actually tell you who I am or how to contact me but no doubt most other trademe stamp users can vouch for me and let you know who I am and if I'm trustworthy.

Sure to be a popular event and I'll certainly be there to catch up with everybody. I understand that one seller who hasn't been there for a long time will be this time and with some great early N.Z. postmarks as well as some other treasurers he has been accumulating over the past year.

About iIdentifying GB QEII stamps, specifically the bands on the low nominals.
I know that by gazing at the surface of the face against light should show the phosphor bands if any.
Question to those who use the GB UV short-wave lamp :-
Does use of this device show-up the phosphor better, clear and more decisive than by any other means?

Limited Edition Albums
I am referring to the ones NZ Post (?) sold starting approx 25 years ago - here is an example currently listed on TradeMe:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/antiques-collectables/stamps/new-ze

aland/other/auction-1276761787-
.htm

There were 2000 produced with each lot of stamps - not sure how many editions were in the set. They are very elegant to look at but I cannot store my collection any longer. As the current market for these albums is not ready to pay anywhere near what NZ Post originally sold them for, I am wondering if it is better to just cut my losses and raid the albums for the $16 or so of stamps?

The GB Phosphor bands easily show up when the stamp is held on an oblique angle to a bright light. I've never found a decent UV lamp to shows these bands but the UV lamps do show phosphorised paper and for Canada stamps they show the phosphor band on them brilliantly. They also show the Australian helicon papers well,

I break up lots of the limited edition packs and sell off the special Miniature sheets, special FDC's and some of the other unusual inclusions. The basic stamps we end up selling for postage. Some of ther limited Edition Packs are worth just a few dollars, most are $30 - $60 and a few worth over $150. They are all listed (and priced) in the cheap N.Z. stamp catalogues.

The UV short wave lamp does the GB phosphors, but works entirely differently to the long wave lamp which does chalky papers, repairs, etc. These work while shining the lamp over the stamps and viewing WHILE IT IS ON. With the short wave lamp you put it on the stamps, switch it on in a dark room, turn it off and whip it away. Then you look at the afterglow on the stamps. i.e. Works when the UV is OFF. Hope of help. They do work with practice.

Thank you dunedinstamps.
I will give it a try to your specifications and see if I can get into the practice of using a shortwave lamp. I have two longwave lamps but no shortwave.

Shortwave 254-266 nm lamp is required any offers from members?

Until then I depend on good sight - TH
