FOR KIWISTEVEN:

Hi Steven had sent a message to you but in the general forum. Was helpfully advised to contact you through Stamp Club:

KiwiSteven - we had contact some years ago and I am just wondering if your skills and knowledge extend to autographs ? I have autographs of both Peter Snell and Murray Halberg on a sheet of paper which is headed HMNZS Tamaki. The Tamaki date is Wednesday February 1963. I am not sure if that was the actual date of the autographs but will track down the
person who gifted it to me and find out the exact story. Thanks for listening ! Kind regards, R. (I guess I am asking the value, and would NZ be the best place to offer it up ?)

Many thanks for reading this !

Yes, I do handle autographs and have had Peter Snell before but not Murray Halberg. Autographs on unrelated pieces of paper are not so popular as autographs on a significant item and undated autographs even less so. You say the Tamaki date was Wednesday February 1963 but forgot to give the actual date. With this in mind do a check on papers past to see if there was anything in the Auckland papers then. 1963 was the year the Halberg trust was formed so perhaps they had a meeting at Tamaki? do your checking to hopefully discover some significance. If you do track down the people who gave it to you then get them to sign and date anything they say about the item.
regards,

Steven

It should be a good day for stamp collecting with such cold weather and lucky for us the Philatelic Centre is always warm and very comfortable. if any collectors have special requests make sure you let your favourite dealers know so they can make sure they bring along the right things for you to hunt thru!

At the Rio Olympics, Natalie Rooney from Timaru wins silver in the women's trap shooting event for NZ's first medal and N.Z. Post issue a stamp souvenir sheet on Tuesday to celebrate the event. The sheet produced the day following the medal win was available from selected Post offices around the country but NZ Post are not producing any FDC's so these will be really scarce. A second sheet for the Womens Rugby sevens will be issued on Wednesday.

I was told by staff in a Post Shop today that the Natalie Rooney sheet was issued because it was New Zealand's first medal won at the Olympics and future issues will be for gold medal winners only.

Checking the NZ Post Stamps website, this information was incorrect. Just issued are sheets for silver medals won in cycling, rowing, canoe slalom, women's rugby sevens and the gold medal in rowing.

What a great Christchurch stamp fair we had earlier today. I was run off my feet both selling and buying usually having 5 or 6 people at my table virtually all the time and sometimes up to 10 people. The fair is certainly becomming a really popular event in Christchurch.

It seems we are again having problems with people listing forged items on trademe. Lot 1161342040 is an obvious cleaned fiscal which has had it fiscal cancellation removed by bleaching and then regumming. The same vendor is also offering another dud with lot 1161343697 which has been so obviously regummed you can see some of the gum on the edges of the front of the stamp. I have reported this stamp to trademe so it will be interesting to see if it dissapears as it should.

If you think we have problems on Trademe with fakes then have a look at this one on Ebay (371526729706). Ebay not interested, the seller (a supposed professional) not interested. The only upside is that it is so damned obvious and a novice is unlikely to be spending that sort of money without taking some advice (hopefully).

How do I know that it is a forgery? Unfamiliar with this sort of thing just don't know what to look for. I certainly wouldn't be paying that sort of money, anyway.

You need to study the stamp closely. The stamp itself is genuine but the overprint is forged as is the so called cancellation. Look at one pictured in a reputable catalogue such as Campbell Paterson NZ catalogue and compare the typeface used in the overprint in the stamp being offered. It is a different type font. However any over-printed stamp I'd only ever suggest you buy one from a reputable NZ dealer with a long history.

Just back from the Timaru Stamp fair held on Saturday. A very successful Fair with a good turn out. The Timaru Hydro Grand Cinderella sheet proved very popular with quite a queue for it at opening time.

Steve is absolutely correct about the overprint, which is a crude and obvious forgery, and the "postmark", which in actual fact is a total fabrication as no such postmark ever existed. However, the really big giveaway, in this case, is that the "VICTORIA LAND" overprint is not found on the 1d Universal at all, it can only be seen on the 1d Dominion (and the KEVII 1/2d Green).

I'll be there and will bring along some odds and ends I've discovered during my current shift. Items which have been unlooked at for several years so it should be a good surprise for some of the fair regulars.

See you Saturday morning at 67 Mandeville St.

Many years ago TradeMe had a British Commonwealth Category for Stamps but this was discontinued (presumably after TradeMe spoke to some "expert" who had no clue about stamps!) I've noticed recently that a number of sellers include Commonwealth listings in the GB stamps category. On ebay British Commonwealth stamps seem to sell better than any other category. So my question is if it's worth requesting that the British Commonwealth be reinstated?

Further on the forgery - good to see that Ebay has withdrawn this item - after several complaints - NOT. So much for a safe buying market place. Although now the price has been reduced from $US2000 to $1600. If we wait long enough maybe they will drop the price to where it belongs.

there are a few people who are keen on colours & shades. I have even met a person who only collected grey coloured stamps from around the world because they were always odd values and usually more valuable than the usual red, blues, blacks and green colours. I use a Stanley Gibbons Colour key for colours. It has 300 samples of the usual colours in the catalogues and uses correct colour descriptions.

I would like to sell them to someone who is more interested in them than I am but have no idea about values. Is there anywhere you would recommend I could take them or where I could send photos just for a rough idea - there are loose in a little "look" book type notebook. Thank you
