THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
6701

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Jeez, talk about some rather favourable photos in the TM listing. The ones on ebay seemed a more genuine representation.

Interesting die crack but I'm not sure about its being a criterion for UNC status.

It is a very nice example of the die crack.

It is rather tempting to list the same coin twice. One listed as UNC with a blurry photo and the other with a clear detailed photo listed as VF it would be interesting so see how much people trust the sellers personal opinion

Slabbed and graded by NNC (National Numismatic Certification)

They are not so much as a grading company but a mass seller on ebay that over grades worn and cleaned coins that suckers buy from daily. I purchased some stuff from them about 6 years ago and have avoided his stuff since. They start all auctions at $1 reserve from memory like this one they are selling

Hi all. Any recommendations for a good coin valuer in ChCh? I have many coins that have sat in a cupboard for years that I may move on that were handed down. Old American coins, Sets, Old NZ coins and notes. Any idea around cost to get approx 100 coins & sets valued? A lot of individual coins have prices on them, mostly $30 -$80 but were bought in 1980's so not sure if still applicable prices.

An expert on this thread advised me to bid live. Otherwise you show your interest too early which may attract other bidders.

Try Peter Alexandre; he is in the Christchurch phone book. But sell on here.

Do you mean live bidding via the web while a physical auction is in progress at a big auction house overseas, for instance? Not something I've ever tried, but I'd imagine you'd need a good connection and quick reactions - at one stage the average time spent on bidding per lot in the Noble's auctions in Sydney/Melbourne was about 13 seconds. Not sure how a live bidding connection could have slotted in such a narrow window, so assume the pace isn't quite as brisk when this system is used.

Do any of the coin experts know anything about a recent Niue coin?

2015 5oz $10 Turtle silver bullion coin issued by the NZ Mint. This is a regular coin with the Queens head on one side and the Turtle on the other. They were issued earlier this year. A collector recently ordered another one from the Mint (He likes silver bullion) but this one when it arrived only weighs 3 oz. The coin differs in that it is a lot thinner but as it has come from the mint it is a genuine variety caused by the mint using the wrong blank. Subsequently the mint wants this coin back! Has anyone else purchased one of these coins and do they weigh 5oz or only 3oz?

Interesting find. Doesn't appear to be on their website at the moment - wonder if they've pulled the listing while they investigate.

yes I don't mean trademe, but a real live auction with proper bidding (where you don't get a lazy 2 mins to decide if you want to bid again or not!).

I can trust that if I put in a bid before the auction, then I will get the best possible outcome. i.e someone will bid on my behalf exactly as if I was there in person to make the bids?

The RNSNZ has been dealing with both NZ Post and TradeMe on both - TradeMe is a bit of a brick wall, though we did get the "replicas" category established as a half-way measure at least. I believe there is a little bit of progress being made with NZP but it will take a little longer and won't be as comprehensive as the previous arrangement. Trust me, the volunteers are doing what they can :-)

I wonder if i was a multiple trademe account thing. They never really hid from it as the payment accounts were for the same bank base number just a different suffix. I just figured it was different staff members loading auctions

Maybe I better get out my handkerchief and have a good cry (bad joke).
But this is really weird ~ someone left a full set of false teeth on the footpath in front of my letterbox yesterday.
Could sell on Trademe to make up my loss (?) But will take in to the Police Station today.

Hopefully antiquesellers will be upset enough with TM to bite the bullet and sell to me direct all their vast stock. TM will be the big loser and I will buy all coin club members breakfast as long as the false teeth are not on the table

I don't normally plug online petitions but this is one I would like to see local collectors take an interest in. It's about new proposed legislation in Germany that seems to combine the principles of our Antiquities and Second-Hand Dealers' Acts but is rather more draconian, insisting that owners have 20 years' documented provenance of any collectible worth more than €2,500 and any "antiquity" worth more than €100. That and other provisions would make trading in relatively common ancient numismatic items onerous and their cross-border trade very difficult, if I am reading this correctly. The person behind the petition is Dr Ursula Kampmann, who produces a weekly (English-language) roundup of coin news - she has been a strong opponent of the draft bill and highlighted the fact that interested parties were left out of the early stages of the discussion - not a good look. While it mainly affects Germany and the EU now, its effects could become much wider, especially for those who trade with collectors or dealers in those countries. Since it relates to collectables, it goes beyond coins, too - paintings, even cars could be covered.
Signatures from outside the EU are encouraged, to show how widespread concerns are:

I have gone and signed the petition. Its easy to do and very important for any hobby collectors from anywhere or else this draconian type of law will take your rights to collect anything. The next step is they will want a register of all collections and their contents and then they will want to charge the collectors the cost of this register. Who knows where it will end.

kiwisteven - 2015-07-24 21:02:00

Agreed. Have also signed. Thank you for the advice. Would Draco have stopped us collecting Greek coins? But a bit after his time (coinage that is). US Executive Order 6102 in 1933 confiscating gold excluded collectables. But any Government could take anything if it so chose....

I'm not sure how to interpret this statement: "This is all the more disappointing because Dr Günter Winands, Deputy of the Commissioner of the Federal Government for Culture and Media, has stated expressively in the mentioned hearing that coins will be regarded separately."

I'm probably going to sign the petition anyway, but given that coins concern me most, I wonder in what manner will they be regarded separately.
