Yes, it shifts the blue and red faces to the back and maybe out of view.

Good luck with your fair/Meeting night. I hope it goes well for you, The Southland Spring Fair I attended in Invercargill was on a cold day so a reasonable turnout and because I had gone down from Christchurch and had a lot of different material, the Southlanders were good buyers. I met a few of my Trademe people and am now able to know more closely what I need to list on Trademe in future to keep them happy.

We had a great fair at Riccarton two weekends ago and lots of people turned up despite it clashing with the last All Blacks game. Mind you as soon as the Rugby game finished we did get another influx of collectors!

Found some old stamps from the 40's? They seem to be from germany.

Some are from New Zealand, not sure how old but it has "2s" on it and a picture of james cook.

Aussie stamps from the 50's still suck on a letter.

A ten pence new zealand king george stamp.

stamps from 1948 germany.

A Hong kong stamp with a very young looking queen on it

a canterbury centennial stamp 1850-1950

1940's stamps from Holland it would appear.

some stamps from 1939 from Canada.
and a load of New zealand 2d health stamps that are blue.

some old stamps from Bahrain and India (no idea what year)

Is it worth looking into how much these are worth? Are stamps only worth something if its an error stamp, or one particular year?

Is their a NZ website that lists rare stamps from nz.

Or an overseas one that is easy to navigate

Aussie stamps from the 50's still suck on a letter. A single letter rate probably not worth a single $1.

A ten pence new zealand king george stamp. Presume 1940 centennial overprinted stamp and if so worth 50 cents if mint or $2 if used.

stamps from 1948 germany. Could be good because German stamps from this period generally are.

A Hong kong stamp with a very young looking queen on it Whats the face value and which Queen? Victoria of QE11?

a canterbury centennial stamp 1850-1950. Worth very little.

1940's stamps from Holland it would appear. Value depends on which ones. Some during the occuptation are rare.

some stamps from 1939 from Canada. Probably of little value.
and a load of New zealand 2d health stamps that are blue. If blue boys from 1931 then worth quite a lot but if more recent Health stamps then around 10 cents each and as you have a "Load" of them I'd guess they are not 1931.

some old stamps from Bahrain and India (no idea what year) Old Bahrain are hard to get so could be good. Old India depends on face values, condition and which designs.

Is it worth looking into how much these are worth? Are stamps only worth something if its an error stamp, or one particular year? Is it worth looking you ask? Depends on the results you get so who can answer this sort of a silly question. It might be or it might not be.

Is their a NZ website that lists rare stamps from nz.
No there is no website listing just rare New Zealand Stamps.

Or an overseas one that is easy to navigate

I guess you really mean valuable rather than rare. Your best bet is to buy a cheap NZ simplified catalogue (will cost you about $10) and they are in colour or go along to your local library and look in Stanley Gibbons World Stamp catalogue. I have answered as many of your questions as are possible to do considering the info you provide.

regards from Christchurch.

What does it mean if a old stamp has the word "Official" stamped on it.

Usually its not "stamped on" it but usually it is overprinted. It means its use is restricted to Mail from a branch of the government and it is done to prevent their staff stealing these stamps and using them for their own private use.

I am going to the Wellington show but only as a spectator as the stand fees I feel are far too high to take a stand for the 3 days. It also gives me a chance to spend some time with my Daughter and her family who live in Lower Hutt. They have 16 Stamp Dealers with stands listed in their Exhibition catalogue including one from the UK.

i have just found while sorting through some old boxes a small metal roll of gummed paper resembling what we used as stamp hinges--the diameter varies from 26 to 27 mm

'gummed tapes' 'patented' 'trade mark registered'

--the cellophane looking paper roll has original gum and still appears usable--looks old but possibly not

never seen anything like that.

In my old days at Laurie Franks Ltd (1973 to 1980) we used to have boxes of cover mounting strips which were about 10cm long hinges.

At the time we imported large sheets of stamp hinge paper from Austria measuring about a metre square and in reems of 500 sheets. We had an enormous Guillotine and cut these sheets (500 thick into stamp hinge size so we got thousands of piles of 500 hinges. people often asked how could we be sure there were 500 hinges in each packet but we could gaurentee there were exactly 500 in each packet! I'd be the only person in NZ now who would know how hinges were cut up out of the sheets.

Lois,

I'm pleased to hear don has come thru his operation okay. I didn't know that he was scheduled for one but did get a very odd email from him with the plain heading of "Cancer" this morning which worried me considerably.

Can you please pass on my best wishes to your Dad. Our history goes back to the mid 1970's when I called on him 3 or 4 times a year on behalf of Laurie Franks Ltd for whom I worked as his travelling rep.

Hi Steve, thanks for your best wishes which I will pass on to him. The good old days, the Ion's had a long association with Laurie and also Len Jury's / Philatelic Distributors company. We remember the sales reps fondly, including Sue and Andy. Yes dad was a bit of a worry - one never knows, and he has had several health issues, but for the last 3 weeks we have had to 'wait and see what the outcome will be' when he was officially diagnosed with a serious problem. One never knows what will happen when diagnosed with the big 'C'. Dad is now 80 years of age - fortunately he keeps fit by walking up to an hour a day - that has aided in him handling a major operation, and obviously he's like a weed - a little hard to get rid of, so you guys are going to have to put up with him! Sometimes he does put his foot in his mouth, but deep down he means well, and is very passionate about the hobby. We got a bit worried as just before going in for op, he appeared to have a turn, didn't speak for half a minute and went pale, as the Anaesthetist was giving him the lowdown, I suppose when you are facing lights out that will happen, fortunately we snapped him out and he came right. He has never had major surgery before but the Doctors at the hospital did a fantastic job, and the operation went to the textbook. He still has to wait for biopsy but I think he is over the worst of it, and will be back to haunt you all soon, so you'll just have to put up with him when he gets back on line which, should be soon LOL!

I went to the Capital Stamp Show today. I strongly recommend everyone to go to the show. There was one exhibit with two or it is three complete sheet of blue adverts. That would have taken a life time to complete that series.

I especially like the exhibit on the POWs mails between the POWs and their loves one. There were also a couple of FFQ exhibits but not my cup of tea.

Thanks Steve, dad sends his best too. Went to see him tonight and he is moaning about the bossy nurses making him walk, as well as shower routine he ain't happy about at all, so he must be getting better. First time I have ever seen him without a stamp in his hand in two days, so it will be good that he is forced into having a break although he is wanting me to check business. I was dearly wanting to go to the Wellington Show, my good friend is their so no doubt he will give me a full report. All the very best

It is with much sadness that i have just read of the passing of Don Ion.
He had so much time for collectors and always shared his knowledge with others. We were always entitled to his opinion and as Lois recently posted he was passionate about philately to the end. My thoughts are with his wife, Lois and family.
RIP my friend.

Yes, sadly a great Philatelic Totara has fallen and he will be missed including by many who read this collectors forum. He was always a great responder to queries no matter how basic or specialised the query might have been. My best wishes go to his family and especially Lois who now runs his business.

Yes , there is one in Bordesley St in Phillipstown less than a km from the CBD. Check out the yellow pages. The place is open 9am to 5.30pm Monday to Friday. It was previously in Shades Arcade in the CBD but like a lot of other businesses since the earthquakes it has to operate from temporary premises nearby.

Yes, it was a great fair today. I ended up having to take 2 and a half tables and was very busy. I counted at one time that there were 12 collectors busy looking thru my stocks at one time and I think that's a record for me. The top choices for collectors were China, Early GB, Perfins and revenues, Canada. this time I didn't take any NZ or Australia along but did take along two cartons of Latin America which surprised many.
