THE NEW COIN CLUB

#Post
6551

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Part of it is due to economic stuff that is beyond my comprehension, but somehow by adhering to the gold standard (or silver, or both, I forget), it was uneconomical to mint silver for much of G3's reign, which is why you get gold coins for almost every year but huge gaps in the silver issues for decades at a time. And no-one really gave a rat's about the copper - cheap, common* stuff! - and there were plenty of underweight forgeries, evasions and tradesmen's tokens making good that gap most of the time.

hmm... that double florin has been horribly polished or whizzed (many circular polishing lines?). It didn't really show up on the photos, but there were probably signs, to be honest. But I ignored them, as sometimes happens.

Should I take it up with the seller, or absorb my punishment like a man?

(I might post a pic or two later. I don't seem to be capable of taking good photos at night, shadow always seems to get in the way?)

Silver crown (5 shillings). They can go quite well even in fairly worn condition, as this is. Have a look around the coins-of-the-uk website quoted earlier for an idea of UK retail prices - bearing in mind that what the catalogue says and what you are actually likely to get can be two very different things! You'd need to look at the lower end of the grading scale, though, Fine (F) or a bit less.

In case this has not already been made clear, do NOT give in to any temptation to polish or clean coins. That's an egg you cannot unbreak. If the person who buys it off you wants to do that, let it be on them. Cleaning it will put off a lot more prospective buyers than an uncleaned coin.

If UNC then I would say between $10 to $15 each would find the buying range.
The AB prefix would have been more
All the best,Alan

Make sure the police tell send an email to the local banks as they often forget that the old paper notes can still be swapped at most branches. They have systems in place to let banks know of foreign currency that has been stolen but normally forget about NZ cash.

I expect that this was caused by a $500 reserve and the bidder may have bid more than $500. I don't think the bidder stuffed up an autobid at all.

What was the problem with the purchase?
Who has to pay for the return as often the sellers accept returns but not the actual cost of it being returned.
Must have a signature required service to prove it has been returned.
The cost of insurance will probably be around 20% of that $400 value.
Good luck
