Hi all, Any ideas where I may be able to purchase a copy of New Zealand Postal Notes 1886-1986 by Jack Harwood. Also approx value on a 1948 Four Shilling and Six Pence Postal Note in nice condition without side strip? Many thanks in advance.

[quote donaldo] "the trouble is does anybody collect these now days!!!!!!!!!" Yep pops, the NZ Postal Notes [NZPN] are very collectable. Jack Harwood told me that he was producing a catalogue on the NZPN a few years back. He is American, based in the States, so we have to be more appreciative of his work, as he had come down to research NZ Archives a few times [at his own expense I presume] for this catalogue to eventually be printed. He'd be an authority on World Postal Notes for sure. Thank goodness he bothered, as there is a limited collector base and it would have definitely been an expensive exercise for him to produce the catalogue. He was passionate about recording the NZPN history appropriately, many of the early NZPN are extremely rare - the earlier designs are very attractive, they look as good as the early type NZ banknotes. The earlier NZPN are seldom seen - and the modern NZPN can be scarce, to think that many were thrown away - considered rubbish! NZPN were widely used in their day [I remembered using them as a school kid in the 70s], and so viewing Harwood's catalogue gives one an appreciation for the depth of his extensive research. I've got a couple of copies of the catalogue as Jack came through Rotorua a few years back, he'd visited Dealers etc throughout NZ to see if they had NZPN stocks. I only had a handful but they were of use to him. We had a good natter, he promised to send the catalogues when he finished, which he did a few years after his visit. Jack was also fascinated with New Zealand history in general, so we had a good yak about Rotorua and local Maori histories. As soon as I find where I put the catalogue, will list on TM!

I have always found that Postal Notes sell well.and sometimes for surprising prices. With attached counterfoils are a bonus.

Yep, you are lucky being down in Christchurch Steven as I have a feeling that Christchurch and districts and larger cities seem to be a main hub for having more appreciation for these sorts of collectables as well as the knowledge base, and that locals have much more awareness, unlike here in Rotorua. Some of the earlier Postal Note designs are stunning and on par with our early banknotes.

Hi all you knowledgeable stamp people. My hubby and I used to collect stamps years ago and have boxes of them around here somewhere. Money is short these days and we wondered about the good old books put out by NZ Post back in the eighties that we all got suckered into buying. There doesn't seem to be any market for them anymore so my question is.

Should we just use the stamps for postage and recoup some money back that way? We purchased two of each of the ones that we did buy - cannot remember the years at the moment and our kids are just not interested in them. What do you think. Cheers.

Hey skydancing - had exactly the same experience as you and for us, yes - we got best return by using for postage. Ended up buying more on TM as they were (still are I guess) selling for less than the face value of the stamps. Cheers Peter

I always list them in the Banknote category although there are also Philatelists that collect them. As you say some of the designs are great with classic NZ imagery.

We literally buy hundreds of these NZ Post annual albums each year and around 85% of them we end up breaking up for postage otherwise we would quickly run out of room. A complete series from 1984 to 2014 (30 years) takes up more bookshelf space than the average house has. Stamp collecting is traditionally filling 1 to 5 stamp albums with stamps rather than buying glossy coffee table books with 1 stamp to a set on a page and only 50 or so stamps in a book. NZ post never think it out long term!

An interesting question raised after seeing an Auction -

What is the First Day of a new Century ?

for the current century - was the first day of the new century -

1 Jan 2001 or
1 Jan 2000 ?

Similarly for the century before:

for the earlier century - was the first day of the new century -

1 Jan 1901 or
1 Jan 1900 ?

obviously IMO the old century should end with 31 Dec 1899 or 31 Dec 1999 for the most recent last century

what of the days 1 Jan 1900 - 31 Dec 1900 ? and
of the days 1 Jan 2000 - 31 Dec 2000

being first year into the new century ?

;-)

I think if you count 100 of anything, you start with #1 and end with #100. I have never heard of a calendar in popular use with a year zero. Therefore the last century ended on 31 Dec 2000. There were celebrations for the new millennium on 1 Jan 2000 but I think it was just convenient because 2000 is a round number worth celebrating and it would seem less significant in comparison to have another celebration for the new millennium on 1 Jan 2001.

I'll be there for sure. its always a great day for stamps at the stamp fair with so many fascinating stamps being offered by such a wide range of sellers. Lots of stamps from big boxes at 10 cents each to rarities at hundreds of dollars each with most things in-between also on offer.

kiwisteven - 2015-02-06 22:45:00
6230

To add to paulmc's explanation: a century is 100 years, so must end at 31 December of year 100. [Year 1 ends 31 December of year 1; Year 2 ends 31 Dec of year 2; ... Year 100 ends 31 Dec of year 100.] Thus the last day of the 20th century would be 31 December year 2000. It follows that the first day of the 21st century would be 1st January 2001.

Boric FDCs.
Before I start this, I would like to state that this is in no way a slant on the seller's honesty or integrity.
I understand that he is one of NZ's most respected dealers and collectors of FDC.
I have bought several items from him and have always received excellent items and great service.

As a keen collector of Boric FDCs, especially the Health ones, I am curious about the number of them that have started to appear on TM and eBay recently.
Usually these are quite scarce and have been mainly restricted to Health issues.
However, an increasing number have started to appear for other issues.
I would be interested to find out how many of each cover exists and if they are actually genuine FDCs or has someone simply taken a cover and glued the picture onto it at a later date.
I also note that almost all the covers are creased and wonder what caused this.
Opinions please.

MAIL BOX CAUTION:

(coming to your mail box soon)

No - that isn't a Little Old Lady on a Mobility Scooter going through your mail - so please try to be kind - even Father Christmas manages to get up more knots than your friendly Postie .. but then there must be hundreds of parcels onboard that adapted Mobility Scooter too .. ;-)

"NZ Post to extend trial of mobility scooters to cut costs of mail, freight deliveries

New Zealand Post is to extend a trial of customised mobility scooters that allow posties to deliver both parcels and letters, helping the state owned mail service cut costs as the internet shrinks letter volumes .."

www.sharechat.co.nz/article/18fb1b26/nz-post-to-extend-trial
-of-mobility-scooters-to-cut-costs-of-mail-freight-deliverie
s.html

So aside from not seeing the Postie quite so often, this must be a further new take on SLOW MAIL ;-)

Once again everyone is getting fed the usual excuses of shrinking letter volumes, shrinking service & increasing cost of the said shrunk Postal service .. ;-)

Hope they havent forgotten to place orders for adapted mobility scooters that will be needed at some time in the future for the aging bright sparks said to be inhabiting the spots around the Boardroom Table so they can determine & diagnose future NZ Post ailments & press releases on the deteriorating condition of the beast at the appropriate speed .. .. ;-)

I have a friend cleaning out a house for her friend who has gone into a retirement home, she has found boxes of stamps.
She has no idea of value and would like to get them assessed by a professional.
Is there someone in the Christchurch/Canterbury area who does this type of thing?
Thank you
