THE NEW COIN CLUB

6201

Welcome to the Coin Club. We are an assortment of newbies and oldbies, amateurs and experts with questions and answers for oldbies and newbies, amateurs and experts in coin collecting, also known as numismatics. Whether you are just getting started, have been collecting for years or have simply found some old coins about the place that you’d like to sell, this is the place to ask your questions.

No one has all the answers, and you may get five differing answers to the same question, yet each may be right in a manner of speaking, especially if opinions are involved. Opinions often vary. If you receive no answer to your query within 48 hours, please ask again.

Honestly, with respect to buying, I've largely cut back because the quality of what's available has suffered considerably in the last year or so. I thought it was a temporary ebb and flow thing, but the tide has been out for a while. The sad truth is, the few things worth buying often end up being bargains because there is so much chaff amongst the wheat.

couldn't agree with you more dude!!

last time I was at Devonport Post Shop it was one COIN per customer.

there are fewer bargains about because there always seems to be one dimwit willing to bid way over the going price.

Did seller drop the reserve as thought had a $200 start reserve?

yes he must have, it was definitely 200 before.

so there are 1,000,000 Anzac coins out there (including rolls)? Those hoarding them for later profit should probably sell them now, because I reckon market prices will only go down!! (of course this is my opinion only)

dtpapa - 2015-05-11 06:57:00

I will save some nice specimens and anything that deviates reasonably from normal, but all the rest I plan to release over the next months (perhaps years?) into circulation. I put a few into parking meters at the weekend.

1 million seperate coins is a lot,but as an item i think i think they will mostly stay in their rolls of twenty, making them closer to a 50,000 item

Fair point to a point. I'm not participating for several reasons, including that TM is allowing the market to be flooded with products from people not in NZ (or Oz), which is itself crashing prices. TM also fails to allows sellers based in NZ or Oz to sell in any other markets, which further suppresses potential returns for those sellers.

In response to that, I am not participating. You are correct, I am not helping to solve the problem. But then, I did not create the problem. And TM does not see that there are numerous problems. Which is yet another problem.

And then there are TM's ongoing software problems......

I don't think this is ture for coins, for one, outside sellers holding New Zealand coins would be few. If they were selling them, they would have had to buy them from nz in the first place. And for other country coins, they are all outside the country and have to be imported at some point, else there would be tight suppy and a high price here.

They should break up the rolls and try to spread them in to shops.

Amen to that - they're meant to be "circulating", after all.

Good to know. I've heard that while items are sold out online, sometimes stores will still have them in stock.

Here's an ANZAC 50 cent with a funny indentation that runs down from the queen's temple onto her cheek:

https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/382145859.jpg

It does not show well in the photo, but I have found four or five out of about 120 so far that are identical, and one with a slightly diminished version of the error. Any suggestions on how to get a better photo? My camera does not like this coin's finish.

Here's an interesting oddity from a 2010 one dollar coin:
https://trademe.tmcdn.co.nz/photoserver/full/382146099.jpg

I did not see one in the December NZNJ or on mudeki's coinerror page. Has anyone seen something like this? The "1" is flattened off as well, but it seems like that might have been post production.

Yes, and even within Dunedin the post shops have differing policies. The uni post shop and city centre one both still exchange rolls (one per customer per day), but south D only exchanges one coin per day!

I've seen the "squished initials" 2010 $1 and thought I had a photo on file but can't see it. Will see if I can find the real thing again ...

The mark on the Queen's cheek on the 50c is interesting - is it a different colour, as if it's been delaminated, or is it just a light effect?

translateltd - 2015-05-12 08:34:00
6227

I was wrong - it was a 2013, with a cud that took out most of the detail on the initials:

On the 50 cent it's a shallow ..... trench (for want if a better word) that runs for approx. five mm. I don't have one in front of me at the moment, but you get the idea. It is definitely not a delamination as it is identical on all five. I am confident it is something to do with the die.

The thing that grabbed my attention on the one dollar was the first zero in the date. There's a bar across it, a bit like a null but higher. I had just written the rest off to wear.

Hi there. I have two big boxes of shillings from various years. Would these be worth anything do you think? How do I go about finding someone in Chch to value them for me. They belonged to my grandfather

Popped into Dunedin Uni branch yesterday and this lovely lady sold me a roll (of Anzac 50c) and went to the trouble of sorting through their stock so I could have a roll with "soldiers" facing out at both ends. This was unasked for but she was most insistent that I get a nice roll and told me I could stop in and get another roll the next day

Still getting the odd roll or two from local Post Shop, but running out of outfits to change apperance each day. Off to costume hire again tomorrow.

Will depend on condition of the coins but you could start by sorting any 1933 to 1946 into a separate pile from the 1947 and onwards.
Pick out a few of the best condition coins from both lots and put up a few pics on here. Then, will be able to gauge if a valuation is recommended, as will more than likely cost you do get a professional valuation done.

Seems that quite a few auctions that have been around for a while have started moving in the last few weeks.... Looks like some new money has entered the local market :)

The US dollar has still gone up in value, It's cost me much much more to get my coins graded at NGC.

Am also taking that they are all NZ coinage. If they are other than NZ would need to group into different years as the silver content coins will vary.

I understand they've been made but not released yet. There should be everything except the $1 for 2014 in due course. See the Reserve Bank site: http://www.rbnz.govt.nz/statistics/tables/f4/

They'll exist, but in proof sets only - but presumably to a different specification to the circulation issues, if the pattern of previous years is continued.

Yes sorry, was referring to the $1 proofs. With no UNC issues that year and only 1000 proof set's it makes it hard to complete a 'set' of $1 coins.

Point taken, though if you wanted to collect all varieties you'd need examples from either the unc or proof sets from most years in any case, since they're often made from slightly different dies and, in the last few years, in different alloys compared to the circulating issues. But if no examples are made for circulation, are the "set" coins really coins or are they just medallic representations of the real thing that are made to pad out the year sets?

Now these were an impressive set 885096640

gammoner - 2015-05-18 22:47:00
6250

At an average price of just US$58 oz in 1972 this had a fine 16.244 oz equivalent , making its spot gold content value of just US$942 for the set.
Am not sure what the issue price at the time was but probably closer to $1500 .
