Or is it that we are not attracting enough new people to our hobbies?

I am in my early thirties and cant mainly collect coins and medals but dont know anyone else my age that is even interested in this stuff. My 4 1/2 year old is collecting stamps and she enjoys all the fun stuff I did as a kid with soaking them off the paper etc. also helps me find errors on $1 coins lol but when she told her preschool about collecting stamps no other kid had a clue or that different stamps exist.

With the fewer numbers of collectors and with the older collections being sold off by family the market has been flooded with items dropping the price as they just want a quick sale.

Thats my opinion anyway :-) My questions would be how do we make coin / stamp collecting appeal to the next generation, are we targeting new collectors in new ways for example do we have websites devoted to research / discussions / collecting tips etc?

Commemorative circulating coins would be great even 1 or 2 a year would create some interest. Currently all we have to collect is errors on our circulating coins but luckily there is enough of those especially the $1 coins that since 2002 have had multiple errors every year. 2010 I have found 9 different errors http://wp.me/P4A88C-e

Stamps I agree there are to many issues every year its hard to keep up with.

Postage cost is a real problem its just not worth sending registered. I regularly send large sums of banknotes overseas and just risk it as the people I send to wont pay an extra 10-20% above the face value although I have sent banknotes using the RNSNZ exemption provided by nzpost and took the hit of the $35 fee

or is it that trade me has produced 50000+ 'want to be ' dealers in direct competition

think they lost money in Aussie & on other areas .. stamps is reportedly their profitable activity .. ;-)

Trade Me prob helps keep the interest up .. so should be helping them ;-)

I believe that with coins that we could follow what other Nations have done and produce circulating commerative coins. The joys of sorting thru your change looking for different varieties of say a 50cent coin would create a interest(similar to the australian series)
I think 5-6 issues a year placed into circulation, would creat alot of interest, and would set off alot of new collectors trying to complie complete sets
Australia-Canada -USA and several European countries already do this, and these have created interest
For stamps I consider it would be a matter of NZ Post
A Reducing the amount of commerative (not regular definitives stamps they produce )- to maybe single health-xmas issue and perhaps another 10 stamps per annum- so say12 for the year

B stop the issue of FDC,s and leave it upto indiviual collectors/companies to organise cancellation- This works well with Cals/Personnel stamps already and makes the collecting of these FDC,s
difficult and enjoyable and creates a real trading interest
C loosen the rules for the standard posting of coins/stamps by NZ Post and producing a registered mail service for international /domestic letters that is affordable Most other nations have managed to do this,so surely we can connect up with one of them
e.g standard registered letter posted in NZ (upto 200gms) anywhere in the world about $36.00 NZ
same letter posted from Australia $9.00-$12.00 registered and tracked
-incoming mail from most of the EURO nations 6-8 euros for 200gms registered and tracked

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Good points there Muzz +1

Post prob need to learn what Customer Service is, act responsibly in regard to services offered (rather than have screeds of onerous disclaimers) keep their charges reasonable, offer good regular service, not bury the market in continuous new issues, and learn that cost plus is not the answer to fill the gap .. unfortunately competition since the 1990's obviously hasn't taught a few lessons on what should have been learned .. ;-)

Praps a good culling session starting at the top is overdue ? ;-)

Thanks we are slowly trying to get errors listed on the site it just takes a bit of time. thankfully more and more people are submitting photos that i load when I get a chance. It is my first website so still needs a lot of work but hopefully it will be there for a long time to come. I have submitted photos for the RNSNZ journal of the 2010 $1 errors so a printed copy wont be far away. feel free to email me on the site though

Last night we had our NZ Stamp Collectors Club Xmas Meeting (with Xmas Party etc) at the Philatelic Centre in Christchurch. As usual we have our "Items of interest" where members show and tell about recent acquisitions. One of our members showed about 12 stamps he had acquired in a lot in last months stamp club auction. He paid some $30 plus dollars for a album and the 10 stamps from a variety of countries had a total value of over $1,000. Now most of those stamps were obscure from European countries and included 2 or 3 which were probably reprints but over-all he got a real bargain and many days of fun sorting out the bargains from the rubbish. it just goes to prove there are some great bargains out there.

I see two price reductions in the 2015 Len Jury catalogue over 2014 pricing:

1935 Silver Jubilee 6d used

1952 King Geo 3d Prov FDC

In a lot of stamps I won on another site I came across this 1981 rivers 60c stamp, I have put it next to the UHM one that I already had for comparison. I have done a google search but found only 1 reference to it in a block of 4 mint being offered for $300. I think the yellow is missing, leaving a lot of green and red on the stamp instead of yellow blue and green. This one has been hinged in the past, does anyone know it's approximate value, did I get a bargain for stamps I paid about $8 for? Thanks

Interesting stamp.
