I sell on both places and i choose which depending on what it is i have to sell. Generally i sell NZ on Trademe along with GB, Australian, USA, Canada, China and British Commonwealth stamps while I sell foreign stamps and any overseas postal history on ebay. its not a hard and fast rule and then again there is more than one ebay. The time of year also affects things. Don't bother trying to sell overseas in May/June/July when all the Northern hemisphere collectors are away on their summer holidays or paying off their credit cards. it was a simple question you gave but it needed a complicated answer because there isn't a simple answer. kiwisteven - 2014-11-01 02:50:00 |
6102 | Hi, I've found this on http://tinyurl.com/paleckk , and have unfortunately won it, but haven't paid yet, I'm really wondering if it is real and not a whole lot of fakes, as they seem too clean. What do you think?? ingies - 2014-11-01 22:54:00 |
6103 | I used google translate to translate it as my German isn't that good, and falz means fold, but that doesn't make sense as none of the stamps appear folded. I do speak dutch and it is very similar to the Dutch for fake, which is falsich in German (I think) ingies - 2014-11-01 23:00:00 |
6104 | "Miscellany of different brands mint + fold" "Briefversand in sachets" "Authenticity: Real Country and region of origin: New Zealand hmmmm .. guess you mite have to wait until you receive them to find out .. dont see anything much there that would be worthwhile fake - so possibility of folds / creases / MNG - who knows ? ;-) Maybe your seller knows some English - have you tried ? 6105 | Google translate also gives hinge as a meaning of falz so it looks like the stamps are mint hinged. paulmc - 2014-11-02 00:31:00 |
6106 | The stamps all look genuine to me. I think you may have just got a bargain. kiwisteven - 2014-11-02 01:04:00 |
6107 | Thanks for your advice, I hope they are real. I thought that as I had won the auction it is too late to start questioning the authenticity? I better pay for them then. I'll let you know what they look like when I get them and post a picture of them ingies - 2014-11-02 01:23:00 |
6108 | I've got a stamp album been in the family since 1898, but stamps are all glued into it. Lots of old stamps from around the world, some torn - I think some child got hold of the album and somewhat ruined it. Anyway I'll keep it for the grandkids to look at - hopefully one day one of them will end up collecting! livepoet - 2014-11-02 02:06:00 |
6109 | Why wouldn't they be real? You'd usually only make fake copies of the more valuable ones, I'd have thought. They do look nice, obviously been looked after, unlike many you find on trademe! dtpapa - 2014-11-02 08:07:00 |

a bit of a shame when the gluepot meets older treasures, but dependent on the type of glue, some types do allow a soak off & clean up .. tmg - 2014-11-02 15:25:00 |
6112 | livepoet wrote:
If they are that old (1890's) then there is a chance the glue was flour & water glue and if so they will soak off. If it was done after modern glues became the usual then you might be out of luck. I'd suggest you take a page out and give it a good long soak in warm water and see what happens. You might be pleasantly surprised. kiwisteven - 2014-11-02 20:52:00 |

Most modern hinges are that size these days perhaps because a lot of stamps are larger than they used to be. Most people use them that size and there is the odd person who cuts them in half vertically. kiwisteven - 2014-11-07 22:47:00 |

6122 | How do you tell if a QE 58 stars error stamp is real or fake? Are there variations on the star overprints? These two listing numbers 804607619 and 801978069 have one of these stamps and to me they appear different? alston - 2014-11-08 14:19:00 |
6123 | I live in Australia, and I love buying stamps from Trade Me. You get a better price deal and some of the Australian sites price stamps like they are trying to sell the one cent British Guiana Magenta. But, all are entitled to make a profit. horamakhet - 2014-11-08 15:41:00 |
6124 | cheers guys, only old stamps so not worried about hinging them, just thought there might be some technique... I do feel the 1/2 inch wide is excessive tho horamakhet, do you search for AUSMATE or just Australia? bayloft - 2014-11-08 19:33:00 |

The Title of this auction was for 'posvars'- Mint never hinged and for '+Falz' - hinged. Falz is the common German philatelic term for a stamp with a HINGE. Many collectors abused the stamps using parts of sheet selvedge and other horrible methods to attach or 'destroy' mint never hinged stamps. The dexterous used clear hinges and after 1945 with the advent of stockbocks hinges became obsolete for those who had the vision of not abusing the stamp . FOLDED hinges then came unto the market. The word FALZ in fact translates to FOLD but in the sense of a philatelic term, HINGE is meant but not referred too. In these times, to apply a hinge to a mint never hinged stamp is sacrilege. It really is quite foolish to list a OPSO overprint without a certificate as they are really difficult to sort out genuine from forged overprints. I have one (Not on the 2/- value) which i have shown to a few experts and the jury is still out on its genuineness or not. I'm still deciding if I will formally submit it to the NZ Royal Expert Committee although i have already shown it to some of those who will have to decide. Any OPSO really isn't a suitable item for selling on trademe. kiwisteven - 2014-11-13 00:23:00 |

6142 | Hi People, Heads up about a new book out called "Mark Cleverley Designer" Some of you might know that Mark also designed some of our New Zealand stamps and this book includes a lot of history about his designs, that were accepted, designs that were not accepted and a lot of correspondence with the Post Office officials about the stamps, and a very interesting letter from Campbell Patterson. TRhe book is on sale now, but I got my copy form the library. Cheers Alan kiwialan - 2014-11-21 14:53:00 |
6143 | Mark Cleverley was never one of my favourite stamp designers.Colours too wishy washy, poorly defined and the designs lacked definition. Much prefer Janet Marshall, Peter Leitch, Peter Durrant, Michael Wyatt or Maurice Conly of the same period. kiwisteven - 2014-11-21 21:21:00 |
6144 | Everyone has different opinions of his work and that's okay. However his work was judged the best at the time. I think a lot of it is people having a reluctance to recognise new and different views of anything. Cheers Alan kiwialan - 2014-11-22 08:09:00 |

The problem is that many of the judges were people from an art gallery background who had very little understanding of the requirements of a good postage stamp design which is a lot different from a larger size painting or graphic Art. Very little graphic art design is successful when reduced to postage stamp size. As far as I'm aware none of his stamp designs won any leading international stamp design competitions. I have little expertise on general design so won't comment on how his general design work was but his stamp design work was certainly sub-standard. kiwisteven - 2014-11-22 10:21:00 |
6146 | Say something and you get 100 different ideas!. I'm not worried what you think and I suppose it's pleasing to see a different opinion . But my idea was to let you know that this book is available and that there are stamp details inside that I think are interesting. I'm not forcing you to read it, I was just trying to be helpful. So I'll give up! Cheers Alan kiwialan - 2014-11-22 17:40:00 |

Alan, I appreciate your advice about the book. its good to know its been released. I just expanded your comments by opening discussion over the merits of various stamp designers. Just because I don't think he was a great stamp designer doesn't mean the book isn't good or I don't want to know of its publication. After all this is a discussion group. I'm interested to know what you think of his and other stamp designers merits. I do care what you think. I'm sorry if you took the discussion as any criticism of yourself or your posting. it wasn't intended to be. kiwisteven - 2014-11-22 19:35:00 |
